Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. I would put a doll on my CC if I was doing layaway or auto-installments, because I am so very bad at remembering what day it is. :/ My CC payment comes out of my bank account automatically every month, but the bank won't pay retail stores the same way, so.. it's kind of a roundabout way.

      Now, if the company would just get back to me to find out if I can /do/ a layaway with the $1100 doll I want.. X.X

    2. I've saved up about $330, but I would rather pay with a credit card then my debit card because I think I owe them money. ^_^; I quit my job for health reasons (yea I'ma wimp) so that will be easyer for me. Stupid underageness.

    3. I intentionally haven't gotten myself a credit card because I don't want to buy things when I want them but really can't afford them, and then end up paying back a credit card debt. I'm much more comfortable saving a bit of each pay check towards my doll fund every week, and then paying in full when I save up enough. I don't like to spend money that I don't have...

    4. I definitely prefer to have the money "in hand" when I buy a doll. It does feel like more of an accomplishment when you have to save for something for a long time to finally purchase.

    5. I'd prefer to have the money on hand, but if I saw a limited or somesuch that I decided was worth the expense, I'd immediately charge it. Credit isn't bad as long as you can pay it off in a month or two. On the bright side, purchases made with credit are good for your credit score as long as you don't carry the balance too long and pay on-time, every time.

    6. i have more crerdit then one person should be allowed. But, i pay on time and in large payments.

    7. I like using my credit card because, in my experience with my bank of america credit card, there is really heavy buyer protection, and it really feels like they are on my side. Like when i ordered a doll from XXXX company (not soom) they said a month... and it ended up like being.... 4-5 months waiting time... and people were getting their dolls in *REALLY* shoddy condition... i wrote to the doll company 4-5 times about where is my doll and then called my CC company and they just reversed the charges.
      I feel safer with my CC company.

    8. My doll isn't completely mine yet. Technically, she's my stepdad's doll. He payed for her with his credit card, therefore he hasn't payed her completely, either, but I'm paying him back a piece each month. And in three months she'll be mine completely. Then, I need to pay him back for a trip to England and the saving can begin. For my next doll, I will save up before I buy her. I just don't like the way it's going now.

    9. The fact that it wouldn't really be mine in this sense does bother me. But otherwise, I don't think it's any sort of problem. As long as you don't miss the credit payments... D:

    10. I've done both and I agree that if it's a limited doll, I'd be more likely to pull out the credit card than if it is a doll that will be available a few months from now. I try to be much more prudent now though and not be impulsive to just buy a doll because I want it now. In fact by waiting and saving, I've found that I either appreciate the doll more, or my mind changes and I find myself more interested in a different sculpt, etc. I don't think the repo man would really come and take your dolls back, but I do see the value in saving for something I really want vs just charging it impulsively.

    11. Personally, I would never buy a doll with money I don't have yet. But then again....I hate to buy anything on credit. I've always lived by the motto "If you can't pay in cash, you don't need it." I'm just too afraid of "what if"...What if I lost my job? What if there is an emergency and I can't make a payment? blah blah blah.

      Also, most of my dolls have either been gifts or rewards for myself. I paid for my first by selling the hundreds of Bratz and Barbies in my attic that had accumulated over the years. My second was from my first Assistant Manager paycheck. Every doll I've bought was either from selling my other stuff to earn it or a "reward" for a promotion. But my most expensive doll is my DZ Yuu, he was under $500. I understand how it might be harder to save up for some of the more expensive dolls that some ppl own.

      I'm not going to judge how others pay for their dolls, its really all a personal choice and what works for me might not work for someone else. :)

    12. I use CC but I pay straight away. Coz before I buy a doll, I prefer to have the money to do so. As my mother have said "Why would you put it on layaway when you will pay for it later? It's better to pay in full." She has a point there, that I might use the money for other stuff even though my doll is still on layaway. ^^;

    13. Especially in today's economy, buying a doll on credit and having to pay it off over many months is not wise! Just think of the added cost of the doll after you have paid the interest on the card. It's far better to save up so that when you do buy your doll you'll be able to pay off the credit card when the bill arrives. Don't put yourself in debt for instant gratification.

    14. This is precisely the reason I DON'T own a CC. It'd be too easy for me to get into trouble ^_^;

    15. I would never put a luxury item like a doll on a credit card if I didn't have the money right there to immediately pay it off. I use the credit card because my cc insures purchases. If something goes wrong with the transaction, like the company goes bankrupt or delivers damaged goods, I can be reimbursed by the cc company. I had to order my doll online so a cc made things easier.

    16. I prefer to save up to get my dolls, but I like lay-away also. I do have a CC for those times when the doll is only available for a short time. Dolls are the only thing I use it for, and as it's the only CC I have, I have to pay it down before I get more dolls. I agree that it's wiser to save up, though. The interest on credit cards is horrible.

    17. Only carry my card I rarely carry cash for personal saftey reasons as has been mentioned before by some people that CC's do monitor for fraud or inusre the purhcases so that if one needs to get something figured out it is already safe. Other wise I would much rather save up for dollies, but there have been times when the impluse strikes and I just do it.

    18. what works for me is to pay in full using my pre-paid Visa. I put money away often in my 'hobby' account and then when I decided on buying a doll, I transfer the funds across to my pre-paid CC. This way I have credit card protection should something go wrong and at the same time I'd know that I didn't have to pay any big CC bills.

      I like to save and pay for dolls in full so having a layaway wouldn't work for me.

    19. I haven't bought a doll on credit or otherwise at this point, but I'm in the process of saving up for one. It's been about two months or so since I started saving up (saving has been slow due to the house being in shambles and therefore having much fewer opportunities for extra work) and my experience so far has been that it's made me fall even more in love with the sculpt I chose. I'm also much more comfortable saving this way because it'll take many months for me to finally buy her, so when I do finally click that button I'll know for sure I'm buying the right doll, and since she's my first doll, I'll know that ball jointed dolls are really things I want to spend my money on. More than that, it's fun to save up in some ways. It is excruciating waiting for so long, but in the end it'll feel so much better when I finally do have her, and in my opinion, saving is part of the experience.

    20. Yes, I've bought a doll on cc. You're still paying the same amount for the doll, just might pay more with interest on the CC if the bill isn't paid in full. Plus I feel much safer using CC then my debit card.
