Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. nekomata_fuyu: I don't think that's bad of you, you obviously trust yourself to pay it back, I used to forget about that part and just keep spending! THAT's bad!!!! ;o)

    2. I think the main thing that keeps me in line is the knowledge that if I don't have a roof over my head, there's noone to bail me out. Falling back to survival instincts rather than mere responsibility usually does wonders for clearing the mind :|

On a separate note: I tripped, slipped, and accidently hit the submit button to order a new doll? :doh
(To be fair, I talked my way down from a $600 60cm doll to a $75 15cm doll first, so it won't hurt too bad. It'll just delay my moving fund for a little while...)

    3. Well done, you just saved yourself $525!!! In my mind that would call for a celebration... you see why I don't have a credit card anymore? Tee hee :o)

    4. I had a phase of being like that just over a decade ago.
"I can't be broke! I still have a cheque book and a guarantee card!!" :doh

    5. I buy with credit card for protection - not only insurance on the item the card company offers, but protection from the seller if the item is flawed or defective, or not delivered.
I feel nothing is wrong with credit cards, except when they are not paid off in a reasonable amount of time and they are used knowing you don't have the income for repayment. I personally don't ever carry a balance I can't repay within 4 months. I've done it this way for 15 years. It allows to budget large purchases and builds a higher credit score for when I buy my next house. :-)
Dolls are a luxury not a necessity, though sometimes it feels that way with my desire for them!

    6. I've been in this exact same position. Hubby and I still have a credit card but its use is reserved a major emergency, such as a broken water main, etc. When we married we lived on ramen for almost a year to pay off our cards, then cut most of them up. We only buy what we have cash available for, and life is a lot easier this way. As you said, we do appreciate the things we have more. The act of saving makes us think more carefully about our purchases. And our credit score is fine, because our mortgage counts for a lot.

If a person has the self control to use her credit card as a debit card-- buying only what she can easily pay off each month-- more power to her! But knowing ones own likely behavior is a good thing, as well.

It's telling that the credit card companies have a nasty little name for the people who do pay their card off each month--deadbeats. Only in the world of personal finance would such responsible behavior be labeled so negatively. It says a lot about the typical behavior of credit card owners, too.

    7. My cc ends up on my dad's account :D (ANWB family-based Credit Card. It's on my name but dad gets the bill). I have never, ever violated the trust he put in me with this card, and have always paid him back the moment he forwarded the bills. Well, once I forgot, he reminded me, and I paid him back with sincerest apologies.

Owning a CC is fine, buying anything with it is fine, as long as you have the money to back up your expenses, or at least the means to back them up in a few months, like Layaway. My position meant I first had to save up before charging daddy's account. While I am an adult and have a job and can pay for my stuff, I don't doubt he wouldn't mind helping me out if I asked him to. However, I refuse to ask for help buying a doll. Books of 20 dollar, fine. Dolls of 400 plus, I don't think so :)

    8. Personally, I do not own even one credit card. I don't want to unless something forces me to get one. I'm already in debt enough with my college loans. I hate to owe money! I like to have my bills paid off as much and as quickly as possible. I never ever want to get stuck with credit card debt and have to pay all that interest on top of the initial costs.

So, for me, I won't buy on credit. I much prefer to work and save for the things I want. Of course cars are another thing, they have to be financed. Still there, I like to buy a good used vehicle and pay it off as quick as I can. Other items, like a TV or clothes, or a bjd, I'll just save until I can buy what I want and pay in full. ;)

    9. I am seriously working on paying mine off. I cut up most of them, and those I did not, gave to a trusted friend who pulled her own self out of debt with credit cards. In fact, I have another friend who did the same thing. Now my credit cards are an hour and a half drive away, locked in her doll drawer.

    10. This is precisely why I pay for every big purchase with my credit card. Even if I have the cash in hand, I'll put it on my card and pay off the balance at the end of the month. It's just nice knowing that if something goes wrong I'm not just out of luck.

    11. Since I'm still young, I'm saving up for my first doll with the money I earn with my job. Although, my mom will be paying for my doll on her credit card and I will be giving her the money for the doll in cash.

    12. airmiles! of course i use my credit card :P. I work very hard and am on salary so, i dont really get to..work extra hard to make the money. I have to sacrifice or whine until my husband caves :P. It would make me very nervous if like- say i go and buy alice's new body when i KNOW i don't have the cash to pay it off but just charge it. Only for the fact it doesnt end there. Then i think well- I need to get her new shoes, oh and maybe some new glass eyes and a wig while i'm at it. and by the end you almost double what you meant to spend simply because you had the available credit...dangerous path man.

    13. I am a credit card owner. I think I got my card just after I turned 18, and I have treated it as one might treat a gun - with extreme caution and respect. The only time I use my credit card is when I am able to pay it off immediately - and I mean immediately - and even then I use it perhaps once every two-three months for something small on a whim. I do my banking online with my debit connected to my credit, so as soon as the payment shows up on the credit card statement (or even before if I have the receipt or feel especially paranoid) I transfer funds to cover the cost. When I have to use my paypal without a balance in it, it takes from my debit, not my credit.. I think it's yet to strike me yet that it's an option to buy something and then pay it off later. Maybe I'll consider it with my new doll's body..?

EDIT: Totally bought a doll with it recently. It allowed me to do a layaway with the bank, in a way, but without furthering the waiting/processing time with my doll that I would have had to if I had saved up to pay for it with money on hand. I was able to pay it all off nearly immediately, of course, since my birthday just passed.. :P

    14. oh yes. i dont really like credit cards anyways, and saving up for the doll is like a process you go through to buy them, and it makes the doll you just purchased so much more special. no credit cards >0
      lol x]

    15. I would have bought a doll on credit only if I came over my ultimate dream doll which is produced only one of. Saving up can be s drag but when you finally get your doll the feeling is unbelievable.

    16. I always use credit card option with paypal when I pay for anything on-line because I get points XDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

But if I don't have enough money to pay off that bill, I will not even make that purchase.

    17. If your payments go through Paypal anyway, you can combine layaway and credit cards to good effect. Make layaway payments with your credit card and then pay off the statement each time to avoid interest. Repeat until layaway is finished.

This way you will build credit history, accrue bonuses (miles, cashback, etc.) and still avoid interest. And you will have the protections that come from the credit card company along with the extra layer of separation from your checking account. If your card has no annual fee, this is better than cash!

    18. I see no problem buying with a CC as long as you can pay it off. Once I'm out on my own I intend to get a credit card mainly for emergencies, but I will most likely attach it to a paypal account for buying doll stuff. However, when it comes down to buying dolls, I won't charge it until I have saved money equaling the cost of the doll, that way I can pay it off and really only have to worry about interest or something.

    19. I usually use CC payment option for all on-line doll stores. This way, I get lots of points from credit card company and later convert them into airline mileages for travelling to Japan and buy more dolls XD However, I always make full payment on my credit card bills so that no interests charges incurred! I think using credit card payment is all about controlling yourself and managing your budget.

    20. I think that people who scrimp and save for their doll seem to appreciate them more than the simple way of just typing in their credit card number and clicking "Buy". I'm not demeaning those who use cards to buy their own dolls in any way and have seen people pay for things that only cost a dollar with their American Express cards so I know it's easier to pay with a card and worry about the bill later.

On the other hand, there are those who kind of live off of credit cards and it actually is better to pay with a card and to pay off the total bit by bit. I see it as a sort of reverse layaway. Whichever method you use to adopt your Dollies is fine as long as you keep out of debt and don't forgo important things in order to save a few bucks to your Dollie fund in my book. =D
