1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. I used my credit card to pay for my dolls but thats after I saved up for them ^^ I just use it for the insurance XDD and before when I still dont have paypal =.=

    2. I always pay with credit and pay it off! I need instant gratification!!!

    3. yesterday at a meetup n_n someone in their 60s simply said this 'oh, I plan to get a nice brand new credit card, charge up all my dolls on it, and i'll be dead before I pay it off!' LOL and what a wonderful plan that is! XD

    4. I do not like to pay a doll on credit. And that is something else to use a credit card! When I like a doll I must save a bit for them. And I must ad that I never bought a doll of 700 or more dollars that is to expensive for me...when I win a lottery that will be the first thing to buy! I don't think I love a doll more or less when it is more exclusive.

    5. I generally buy dolls on credit, but only when I have the funds to pay the balance off all at once. Interest rates on credit cards when you do partial payments are killer so I never pay less than the full amount I owe.

Besides, I get points on my card which can get me other stuff.

    6. I've used my CC for quite a few doll purchases but I ALWAYS pay them off fully when the bill comes through.
I won't buy a doll on credit though if I know I can't pay it off right away, i'd rather wait and save up than be in debt..

    7. I sort of do both; I'll save up the cash needed to get the doll, buy it with my credit card, and then dump the cash into my bank account to pay off the credit card within the month. It helps build my credit score and just in case I get hit with a little more for shipping than I had planned, or something like that, I have a little extra leeway without possibly getting a surprise overdraft charge.

There is one doll, though, that I would have loved to have used my credit card on when I didn't have the funds(but I was responsible and didn't, and actually seriously regret it) and will still use my credit card on if he comes up, and that's Soom's Shoshon:aheartbea who I'll have to get second hand
I do have half of his supposed amount in cash, but just in case he pops up on the marketplace before I have the full amount saved up I can still pounce on him with my credit card :mwahaha
Or if I'm borrowing my mom money and don't have his funds on hand but will (supposedly) be getting them back... Someday...:sigh

    8. I try not to rack up rediculous amounts of credit card debt the way I used to, in my younger, less mature days (making myself sound old now, even though I'm only 25 :sweat)...so I really only buy things with my credit card when I know I'll be able to pay them off by the end of the month, or maybe a bit longer, but only if I have a plan for doing so!

So what I did with my last two dollies (which should be shipping out by tommorow!) is I put them on layaway, and used my credit card to pay them off month by month, as I could afford it (WITHOUT having to eat nothing but Ramen). And I did sacrifice some things I might otherwise have had, like manicures, hair appointments and new clothes, since I knew I had that layaway payment coming up every few weeks ^_^;; Heck, I probably overcompensated, so it might just have saved me money in the long run...

Hmm, probably should at least get my hair now that I've completely paid them off. I probably look like a total slob, the way I've been neglecting myself!

Anyway, the greatest thing I've probably learned from this hobby is patience, because even when you do pay your doll off in full to begin with, there's often a long wait involved as you wait for your doll to be made, and that does make it all the more rewarding, I think. Everything else is instant gratification these days, but when I'm waiting for a new doll it's almost like I've recaptured that old feeling of anticipation that always came with waiting for Christmas as a child :D

    9. My credit card get used for about 90% of my purchases since I do a lot of online shopping (yippie for importing and living in the far north!) but I do so with the intent of paying off my bill each month. As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I use the credit card to help protect myself from frauds/scams. It's far easier to fix damage caused by someone getting a hold of your cc info than it is your bank info.
That being said, my doll was bought with funds from my bank account instead of going on my card, since my limit is still very low. However, I had all the funds I needed for my doll at the time of buying him, and had he gone on the card, it would have been paid in full at the time of recieving my card statement; I wanted to purchase him only when I really did have the funds for him. It took me a few years of waiting and convincing myself he would be worth it, and finally the circumstances worked out so nicely for me to get the funding I needed for him. If I ever do purchase another doll in the future, I'd probably go about it in the same way, or pursue a layaway option if I couldn't get all the funding at that time. I can tolerate waiting for something I want, plus waiting gives me time to be absolutely sure I'm not just buying on impulse and will regret my decision later.

    10. im not sure if the rest of the world has debit cards, but australia does. a debit card works like a credit card does, where you can buy online and everything, but you can only use the money that is in the account linked to the card. i only use my debit card for buying online (and my mums in the fraud department of the bank my accounts are with, so if anything goes wrong i can just tell her) and i refuse to buy a credit card. knowing me, i'll end up with a million dollars of debt and be unable to pay it back.

    11. I'm very anti-credit. If you don't have the money for it, you shouldn't be buying it. This obviously does not pertain to houses or cards, which is what bank loans are for (even if I find them disgusting as well), but think about it ---- IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD IT, YOU CANNOT HAVE IT. This is why companies have layaway plans. You pay gradually when you have the money.
If you're buying your doll on credit because you CAN afford to pay the credit company back very soon because you're trying to build credit, sure, fine, go for it. This atrocious credit system is unfortunately necessary in these times, no matter how abhorrent it is, I understand that. But if you don't have the money for it up front, what do you have the money for? Food, clothing, shelter, savings for the future, that all sounds a little bit nicer to me than (no offense) a very pretty doll.

Yes, elshe, we have debit cards in the US. That's where all my money lives. It's in an account where I can't see it, so I'm not tempted to spend it as freely as I would cash. I agree with everything you said. Debit is definitely the way to go. Can't spend any more than you have.

    12. I agree with everything that you just said, vazinger. most of my money lives in my debit account as well, but i only transfer over what i actually use (with some extra for the difference between currencies) and then transfer it back so the account is always empty - just in case it's compromised and someone tries to take all of my money.

    13. Charge it pay your minimums, no bid deal. When people are eating packet soup, taking out second mortgages or using consolidation loans to pay off there cards then there are problem. I pay for my hobbies with clothing and things I sell to other doll owners, when I make a few elaborate out fits I will make another doll purchase.

    14. I am trying to pay down cc debt so I haven't bought a doll using a cc. I do use layaway though which works for me. Most artists will allow you to take the doll with you from a show, etc. I am sstill paying on a layaway for my Dollstown Elysia and am trying to "save up" for a new doll. Selling some of my older traditional dolls to get the funds. Not easy!

    15. Since I have money in my bank I just use my Visa debit/credit card and no need to choose that option...I tend to pay things in full rather than to deal with it, let say, pay them back a little bit each month...* I just hate writing checks xD*. I just hate being bother by these little things.....I like it to be done and over with. And plus I always make sure I have plenty of leftovers for emergency use etc...

    16. I try very hard not to charge doll related purchases to my credit card. If I do, it only for small things (wigs, eyes, etc.) and I make sure I can pay off the balance at the end of the month. I charged a doll once many years ago and I won't do it again. Paying off the debt was very stressful for me because my interest rate was very high (I didn't really know what I was getting into at the time). So now I'm very careful with my credit.

If I want a doll, I either save up for it or I get it on layaway. I must say that layaway has been the great enabler for me. I don't mind waiting a bit longer to get my doll if it means I can make small payments for it over a few months without interest.

    17. I'd rather use a credit card than a debit card. If something goes wrong with a debit card, it's a lot harder to fix it because that's money taken directly from the bank. Not saying any of you are wrong, it's just a matter of personal preference. I prefer the security I have when buying online with a credit card rather than a debit card.

Then again, I also try to avoid ever buying something on credit that I don't have the money to pay off right away. Right before my wedding, I got into a little bit of trouble and ended up carrying a balance longer than I like to, but I'm back on track with everything now. Just because someone uses credit doesn't mean that they don't have the money. My husband and I pay off our credit card weekly, and we haven't had to make any really big purchases on it that we're unable to pay off immediately yet.

The smart way to use credit is to pay with your credit card and then knock off the balance immediately. Don't let it start accumulating interest. You're still using money that you have in the bank, but you're not transferring money directly AND you're building up a positive credit score while you do it.

If you're buying an $800 doll on credit when you only have $500 in the bank, that's another issue entirely, and you should think really hard about whether you want to carry a balance until your next paycheck.

    18. I applaud saving up for doll first, but in the case of LE dolls or ones that are only available to order for a short time (as in Soom MD's), to have credit available is an huge bonus.

I buy most of my dolls on credit or if I have sold one then that money stays as 'doll money' for the next. I will, of course, only buy on credit if my budget allows for it comfortably. For me, I'm better able to pay-back than I am to save as I don't like to owe anybody anything and that makes me very diligent in getting the money paid off asap.

    19. I use my credit card cuz it's a disney card. And I accumulate points when I use it. And I'm saving up for a trip to disney world. :D

However, most of the time I have the money saved up first. In the cases that I don't, are with LE dolls.

The thing is, with me, though, my financial income is also very stable. I have had a very stable salary with my job for years. and if something terrible DID happen *knock on wood* my saving's account would be able to pay off a 400 dollar doll [I would never put a doll over 400 on my credit card] without suffering much damage.

I'm very good at saving up money. I think it's the people who throw money around that would have a problem with credit cards.
I always tell my friends and family to never put more on their credit card than they can afford.

    20. The repo man doesn't come to take your dolls away, When you have a credit card if you fall in default they put you on a collections list after awhile then they send you bills, or they wage garnish you but they don't come and collect your dolls.
