Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. First, I really doubt a repo man would come and take your doll if you couldn't pay your credit card. That just sounds silly to me.

I'm actually using my mom's credit card to pay for the boys I have on layaway, but it's a little different. I don't have a paypal account so I'm using the pay as guest option. Every time I save up enough money for my next payment I give the cash to my mom and borrow her credit card. So she has the money to pay the credit card bill as soon as it comes and I actually am saving up and not using it until I can give her the cash.

But really, I don't see the problem in using a credit card. As long as you're making enough money to pay the bill every month I think it would be a good way to build up credit for when you're looking to buy a house/car/whatever in the future. I probably wouldn't charge an $800 doll, but maybe a $200 one or less (if I was gonna order it anyway, obviously). I think many people use a credit card just cuz it's the easiest thing to do now-a-days. Someone might use a credit card even if they have the cash and just pay the bill all at once to avoid interest piling up. It's a convenient way to pay for most things online. But as I said, I don't think I'd get one of the more expensive dolls on credit because I wouldn't wanna end up paying more for it with interest and all. But I'd definitely make less expensive purchases with a card to build good credit. If I had my own credit card then I'd be using it instead of my mom's to make my layaway payments cuz I don't have any credit and one day I'll need it.

    2. I absolutely use my credit card for ALL my doll purchases. For a purchase that big I want to be covered. Sometimes I use Amex, in which case the ENTIRE balance is paid at the end of the month, or I will slap it on a revolving account. I pay my bills on time everyonth and I pay way more than the minimum....I'm fine with it.

    3. Other than purchases on YJ in which I remit the funds directly to my agent via remittance in order to save cost, all my other BJD purchases are made via credit card. Why not? For every dollar chalked up on the card, I am accorded miles to redeem air tickets. In fact, almost every purchase in my daily life is paid on credit, from meals to movie tickets. But of course, the bills are always paid off in full when it arrives.

Paying via credit is not just for convenience but also serves as a personal reminder when I see my total monthly bills. At least I know how much I spent that mth.

    4. I would pay with CC just to get cash back or milage but I'd first save up the money so I can pay off the bill at the end of the month. Instant gratification is lovely, but I enjoy the satisfaction of finally having saved enough for something and knowing I've earned it.

    5. I usually buy dolls on my credit card or paypal balance. I like to pay on credit card because I collect airmiles and if I pay it off right away I don't get any interest. Credit card also allows me to do "layaway" in a way too - for companies like Volks that don't take it. My last doll was a spur purchase on credit card because it was such a good deal/chance; and since I'd kept my CC at $0 for the last year I decided I would treat myself since he was only about $400 and I could more than afford minimum payments for him plus have plenty of CC room for emergencies. : )
I think it can be done responsible but you have to be realistic!

    6. I've had both a credit and debit card for quite a while now. Honestly, I rarely ever take my credit card from my wallet. My debit card, however, gets a fair amount of use. I would never pull a doll fully on credit if I were to use it though, unless I had enough at the end of the month to pay in full. I'm probably borderline obsessive about keeping my funds sorted and saved, so I prefer my money immediately taken from the bank rather than waiting a month haha. I never purchase what I do not have money for, and then some, even for small items.

I honestly prefer using Paypal, which is directly linked to my bank anyway. When it comes time to purchase a doll, I like to pull 1/2 to 2/3 from my paypal funds, and only the remainder right from my bank account. If i was faced with an LE that I desperately wanted, I guess I would be more likely to put it fully on card - but even then, only if I had proper funds to do it debit.

I feel that credit is a potentially very sticky situation for people with impulse problems, but if a person is responsible enough to handle one, I don't see a problem with others putting dolls/doll items on credit. IMO, it should never get to a point where you're rushing to "pay off your cards" from luxury purchases. That's irresponsible, credit is not free money for you to use whenever. Seeing people with 10+ cards that reject at work is, quite honestly, very disturbing.

    7. As I use my credit card for every large purchase (for the bonus points and also for the buyer protection), that would extend to dolls as well. It's just a matter of using credit responsibly.

    8. Dangerous! ou are right... be careful and be able to pay up. If companies fail us, are we entitled to fail companies or ourselves?

    9. I've got a limit to how much dolly stuff I can put on credit. 1,000 TOPS. So I have spring fever dolly buying madness but inevitably it resorts to paying cash. Than I set up a payment plan to work down the credit card.
I really only got this card for trips, school and working on credit soooo I see my dollies as building my credit rating.

    10. I've used cash I already had saved up for both my dolls. I paid through Paypal credit card, but I still had the actual money in my hands when I did it. Even though I wasn't saving for them specifically, I did earn the money. I can't see using a credit card and not already having the money on hand to know that that doll is for sure mine.

As some people have mentioned, the doll hobby would be great for building credit- as long as you're responsible with it and you know you'll be able to pay when the time comes.

    11. I pretty much use a CC for all my dolly related purchases. But before I click the 'pay' button, I make absolute sure that I am capable of paying the rest back the next month and leaving nothing but a small balance to build up credit.
I know how much I have each month and definitely make plans of how much I am to save, how much I need for necessities, and how much I am able to spend on my dollies. Whatever I do, I never go past the amount I can spend on my dollies.

As for purchasing a doll on credit, I haven't done so yet, but I'll probably put them on layaway rather than having a 500+ bill in one shot. So it's like having a three month layaway turn into a four month layaway to pay for them fully without ridiculous interest fees. :)

    12. I can't bring myself to put a doll on a credit card, because I am... for lack of a better term, a "worst kind of scenario" type of girl.:sweat I am always worried that something will go wrong and I won't have money to pay for either the doll or my other expenses so I wouldn't even be able to enjoy the doll if I bought it on credit. I guess it's time to get another piggy bank ready, because I won't buy a doll unless I have the cash in hand, but to people who aren't as neurotic, good for you. I wish I could be more like that.

    13. It's neat you bring this up. Like at least about half the people who've commented, I'd probably never use cc myself. I don't even own one (I own a debit card that can be used as "credit" where MasterCard's accepted, but..), and I don't think I'd ever want to buy a doll STAT. LEs are cool and all, but--I'd be too freaked out if I ever bought one, too paranoid. And I'm just not comfortable dropping that much money on something, not quite.

Anyway! I'm twenty, and my girl here is the first major purchase I have ever seriously saved up for (I never had costly ambitions as a kid xD). Worth it. Completely worth it.

From working hard, then pocketing my money, getting everything together with paypal--it was a slow process, and I writhed the whole way, but it really made the experience all the richer. I remember most of all, waiting for my bank funds to transfer over into my paypal--how it took not 3-5 days as promised, but six (and that was after the two-day waiting period to activate my account--I'm rambling). What was most comforting about taking the time to save up and deal with those waiting periods, was it really gave me time to think things over, and make sure I really wanted her. It was reassuring, if nothing else, to be able to say to my friends and family that I had really considered my decision to get a bjd, get into the hobby, and that I worked hard and saved up for her.

Cliches aside, I think the anticipation build-up and wait is really worth it. Whether it's related to ccs or not, so many people these days are used to getting what they want at the drop of a dime--so "character building" aside, having patience and waiting at least really makes you appreciate what you're investing in.

    14. Reading a lot of these replies has really made me blush because I have to hold my hands up and say that I am an 'instant gratification' type of gal and I haven't saved for any of my dolls!! When I first started collecting dolls I never dreamed of paying for one on my cc, but as my interest in the hobby grew my tastes became more expensive. Rare dolls would crop up on forums or ebay that I would 'have' to have because I never knew when they might appear again, so they'd go on the cc. I work full-time and don't have any financial responsibilities besides a mortgage (no kids, etc) so I don't have any issues with buying a doll on credit and then spending a few months paying her off. Sure, I end up paying some interest on her but if she is really special, this doesn't bother me at all.

    15. Same here. I'd only use the credit card if I already had at least half the money for the doll already and some kind of income, mostly just to build good credit though, since I seriously doubt I'd ever need a several hundred dollar doll badly enough to just charge it 'cause I don't have enough cash ready.

    16. I prefer a long time saving than buying in credit, because it's safer that way for me.
I don't know what will happened in the future, so... buying a doll on credit... totally not for me.
I don't know whether I can finish all payment or not...
What if I have something urgent to do, and there goes all of my saving? >.<
To prevent such thing, I prefer to save, savee, and saveee until I can fully pay my doll. :)

    17. I have no problem putting dollie purchases on my credit cards, or layaway. I use paypal for everything I can and pay most of it off, if not all, every month and same with my credit cards. I try keeping everything paid off for the incase, or emergency situations. I also use layaway with the dollie sites that offer it and even that I pay two payments at once if possible or at least 20-30 more than the payment amount. As long as it is done responsibly and you have the money to pay it back, I don't see a problem with it. Just don't get too crazy where you can't handle it or afford it.

As for saving for a doll, it's just not possible for me. I've tried. That's why I haven't been able to get my Dream of Doll E-An or Homme Ducan yet. I just end up spending the money on bill payments, or other things instead and things usually come up then the money gets spent. So that doesn't work for me.

    18. I don't like to put my dolls on layaway but for some cases I will. I will not put my doll on credit card however. I feel like if I want to be in this hobby I have to save up and have the amount in cash ready for deposit or else it is a no go. I keep my doll money and my real life money very separate and I am not keen on dipping into my "NEED" money to make up for my "WANT" money.

It also majorly saves my butt from buying too many :)

    19. I don't even own a credit card, hehe. I keep telling myself I'll sign up for one in case of emergencies, but then I never fill out the application. I don't think I would abuse it. In fact, I feel like I wouldn't use it enough to warrant having it.

I tend to be good at saving money. I have automatic deposits that go into my savings account every time I get paid, and if I have extra by the time my next pay day rolls around, I always put more into my savings. That was how I was able to buy an unplanned doll on a bit of a whim, although she wasn't nearly as expensive as the one I had been saving for (and bought a little early... a savings cushion is a great thing).

I think I prefer saving for my dolls. I don't know. In all honesty, I think putting the doll on your card and making payments instead of putting that money into a savings account is almost the same. The only difference is the interest that gets tacked on.

I may put a doll on layaway in the future. I just like the idea of getting my doll soon after it's paid for.

But yeah. No credit for me. At least not for now.

    20. I paid for my most recent doll with credit. Then I went to the bank a week later, and paid off the charge with the money I had in my doll fund (Saved change, extra cash, the occasional dividend stored in my mattress, etc.)

I feel like credit is dangerous for me, because I'm forgetful, and unless something is beeping at me, I'm likely to lose it in the scary underdepths of my mail file. I've become better at bills, thanks to online banking and auto-pays, so I'm experimenting with the idea of a credit card.

I still don't think paying with credit will be the norm for me, though, unless there's cash backing it up.
