Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. For what would not began to buy on credit a doll. In Russia credit cards widespread, but at us very high percent on credits. Therefore in Russia it makes sense to take on credit only something very expensive, the car, or apartment, on what it is impossible to accumulate.
And the doll bought on tick can be received twice more expensively.
I consider that credit cards a thing not so useful, it weakens, and forces to make expenditure, big, than the person presumes. Many my friends give the salary large part on the credit repayment, and it is very sad.

    2. i don't buy dolls on cc, as i do not have one. and i do not want to own one, as i know i will overspend a lot. so by not having a cc is good for me.

i was lucky for my first 3 dolls, cuz i received 4 months of bonus last year (in my previous company).
i used the bonus money and my 2 months salary on my 3 dolls within 4 months. i did not plan to get the 3rd doll so fast, till i saw him on a forum, someone wanted to sell him away. and i had enough money after receiving my salary. so i just bought him on impulse! lol...

as for my incoming 4th doll, i am paying by installments, as i am buying it at a local shop. so it is easier for me, to pay by installments, and it does not affect my overspending for the following months.

    3. I have a paypal account attached to my bank account specifically for the dolls. Because doing a direct payment instead of a CC payment lowers the fees that paypal attaches.

I don't really see a problem with buying a doll on credit, as long as it's within your budget.
If you're only ever paying off the minimum payment, so interest alone is causing your bill to grow, then it's not within your budget.
But I buy plenty of things I can afford with credit, because it helps build your credit rating so you can get a loan for much more important things, like a car or house.
And also I get air miles...

I purchase a lot of things on credit, but paying my bill off entirely before the end of each month is always important.

    4. Due to a debt scare with my parents, I've been terrified about credit cards. However, I'm slowly coming around to the idea of them. I have decided though that if I get one, it will only be used for buying limited dolls and before I put anything else on the card, I'll pay off what I owe. I like waiting and saving up for a doll, but if it's limited and you're in love, but can't scrape the money together fast enough, you're kinda out of luck, you know? I missed one doll that way and I would love to avoid doing it again, haha. Like others have said, you just have to be careful how you use them.

    5. I dont own credit cards, i prefer to pay right there and then. The thought of debt and owing money doenst appeal to me at all. I either can afford it or not... i think with pricey things like these, the best policy is to save up... you might find yourself with a nice lil sale ...:)

    6. I'm not much of a credit card person, simply because I could easily see myself drowning in it--which is the last thing I need as a college student!!!
I have a "trainee" sort of credit card from our local bank with a $200 limit, so I can't really use it to buy dolls, but even now I'm REALLY cautious with it--I only use it if I have at least 90% of the money I'm spending available (even if it's not on me at the time). And because it's got such a small limit, I only have to pay 10%, so at most I'm only paying $20 a month. :/

I can see why it would be a million times more convenient to use a credit card for soom dolls or Iplehouse limiteds, etc, but at the same time... I don't know XD It worries me. I've thought a lot about what I would do in the event I really fell head over heels for a Soom monthly, but the truth is that I just don't know--I much prefer being able to pay off everything at once. :/

    7. i think buying anything on criedt is evil... unless its something you have to like a house or a new car. it would mean more to you if you save and earned it over just using your master card....

    8. LOL yeah... i mean once u are older then comes the BRUTAL debts for houses, etc etc... i dont think i could put myself in debt for a doll... as much as i love my Dauphine and my coming Paria Brownie... I saved for them, and paid for them straight up...

    9. My favorite way to pay for a doll is the auto-deduct plan that some dealers let you take advantage of. It's like layway, except they send you the doll right away. Then they deduct monthly payments from your credit card or let you send them post dated checks that the dealer will deposit at a pre-arranged date every month.

    10. Hmm yeah, still, the thought of having to pay an amount every month puts me off... i am paranoid, so i rather pay it all in one blow than in tiny lil painful dropplets :P :P

    11. LOL surely you do not mean you should use a credit card to buy a house or car?
As you get older and have more debt and you realize that some times credit is a necessary evil and not all credit usage is the same.
There are business credit cards for a reason. No business operates on cash 100% it just doesn't work that way.
Credit cards are for responsible adults who know the ramifications of them. I agree it is too easy for people to over charge. But people need to take charge of themselves and act responsibly.
I am not saying everyone should have credit cards or go into debt for stuff but you cannot classify all credit use as bad or vice versa.

    12. I have bought most of my dolls on cc. While I have paid off their cost plus interest, I still have a high balance because of poor usage habits previous to that. I always pay far more than minimum, but of course it does take a long time to pay cards off if you over-use your card like I have. Convenience is a huge part of it, as my money is split between two countries and two currencies, and that can make things awkward. I am also Instant Gratification Girl, but occasionally I can rein myself in these days . . . just a personal thing, it has never really added any pleasure to a purchase for me to have saved up for it.

On the one hand, I'm working on improving my habits. Of course it would be better to be saving up the money I'm making in payments, but I'm living comfortably even doing that.

On the other, I do get irritated with the moral tone people often use to speak about debt and credit cards. My situation isn't ideal, but I'm handling it, and I refuse to feel guilty about it anymore. I'm happy enough, and I'm sure my credit card company is delighted! :sweat

    13. I agree with everything you posted. I hope you get caught up. Don't let anyone ever make you feel quilty about your choices. And life is about choice :)

    14. hm... I buy most of my stuff on cc... hell I get gift cards at my coffee shops! I rarely have cash on hand unless I'm out drinking at a bar.

Debit costs money per transaction and if the cash is there, I'll spend it. Easier on credit.

I'm ocd about budgeting though. I never spend more than I can pay off at the end of the month. As a result, my credit rating is through the roof for someone my age ^-^

    15. I huess it depends on the country. Here most stuff you get with master card, visa, gets charged a fee, as opposed to using your debit card, or a direct bank trnasfer in PayPal.

    16. What a great discussion topic! At our house, we've recently switched over to a cash-only system, where everything we buy is only cash. We pay ourselves a cash allowance each month, and hence are getting ourselves out of some accrued credit card debt (which we did while my hubby was in school and I was staying home raising kids).

I have to admit, while the switch from instant gratification has not been easy, I do find I enjoy the (fewer) dolls I buy much more now. And I am utilizing lay-away also, which is a great option. And it feels great to be getting out of debt.

    17. I use my credit card constantly.... It is easy, widely-recognized internationally, and makes the sellers feel safer too. Best: if you need to jump on a limited, immediately, with no layaway, it gives you the power. When I get the bill, I pay it off all in one lump. If you don't spend money that you know you don't/won't have, it's just not that complicated.

I suppose if you don't earn a grownup salary and/or if you are simply not into budgeting-- if you don't have a solid sense of your finances & your position-- then letting yourself use a credit card would be a little scary. It's not for everyone if they don't feel comfortable with it. As the saying goes: With power comes responsibility. But if you can wield it sensibly, it's a wonderful thing.

All these sanctimoniously-flung "moral" sidelines are total bollocks. Using a credit card doesn't mean you deserve your doll less. It doesn't mean you didn't work your ass off to earn the money to pay off that doll. It doesn't mean you are an evil rich despot who lives for greed & deprives hardworking non-credit-card-owning people from getting their dolls. For that matter, if you're in deep credit debt, that doesn't mean you're a greedy flibbertigibbet who deserves her punishment, either. And that gem about how credit-cards deprive you of the satisfaction of saving up your money: *sigh* Kids, the money that grownups use to pay off credit-cards is REAL! Very real! It's been earned, via work or other means, and it has accumulated over time! A credit-card is a tool to use one's money; it's not really a magic wand!

There is just no morality involved here, either way (well, OK, unless you've actually stolen the credit-card ^^). There are emotional reactions, fear, and hysteria, but there is no immorality in credit shopping.

    18. I agree whole heartedly with JennyNemesis. Credit cards aren't something to fear or to use as a baseless reason for judging others. It's a tool, it's something to have respect for, but it's not evil as one poster called it. Credit card payments come from working--CCs aren't a source of free money, and having a decent sized line of credit means you've been responsible in the past. Choosing to use a credit card does not make a person irresponsible or mean they didn't work for their doll, since they still have to pay it off in the end. CCs can also be safer as you can initiate a charge back rather than having to go through paypal and hope the seller has enough in their account to pay you back with.

Sometimes I use a card and sometimes I don't. I haven't been using mine for awhile, since I'm not in as stable a financial situation as I would like to be. A card isn't something to use when I have no money--it's something to use when I know I'll be having X amount of money coming in that I can put towards the balance. When my situation changes, I'll most likely use it again (staying within my own personal limits of course). The most important thing about CCs is simply understanding how they work so you don't trip yourself up later.

    19. I bought my first doll using money I saved up and what I got from selling back a few old videogames. I didn't use a credit card, but the idea of taking advantage of your own so that you can purchase your dream doll (that just happens to be an LE) doesn't seem like a bad idea. As long as you know that you can pay it back in a timely manner, then why shouldn't you?

    20. I completely agree with JennyNemesis.
Personally, I don't have a credit card, so I couldn't use one even if I wanted to. However, once I graduate college and get a more stable job I plan on getting one so I have it as an option. As long as someone uses a credit card responsibly, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it.
