1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Buying dolls on credit?

Nov 14, 2008

    1. I think it would be ok to buy a doll on CC as long as you're aware you can pay it down and arent spending money you don't have. I generally use mine for things I need that I might be abit short on till next payday. For wants like dolls my best friend and I do the same thing. We sell things we don't use/play with anymore and buy the doll once we have the paypal balance. If you want to build your credit the safest way is to make sure you could pay upfront w/o a CC, use your CC then send the money straight to pay it down! ;3 It's all personal preference and being responsible to your own situation though.

    2. I bought my last soom monthly on credit... i mean, i can either pay the COMPANY layaway, and get my doll way later, or i can pay the credit card the layaway payments that i would be paying to the company and get my doll a lot sooner. But that's the catch...
I set it up to make monthly credit card payments AS IF i had done a 3/4 month layaway.
No harm in that, people do layaway all the time.

On the opposite end of that argument though is the lady (unnamed) who i knew who kept getting credit cards and buying dolls until she was $18,000 in debt because of BJD's, all the money spent in about 4 months.

    3. I think that if you use the credit card to buy but pay it off immediately to build credit and like it for the safety features versus debit, have at it. I don't think it is responsible or a good idea with the way things have been for a lot of people to use money you don't have (that then gains interest so it takes twice as long to pay off) to buy an item that as much as you want, you probably don't need right this second

    4. I'm fully agreed with Latte in this matter. I will never use any credits for buying - not for dolls, not for anything else. Quick money can add serious problems in the future and takes away a part of a charm of expectation.

    5. No credit cards for me please~ I know myself very well, if I buy something on credit I can go overboard and regret it later, using my own money puts a limit on my spending habits^^

    6. QFE. I used to be one of those ardent believers in NOT having credit cards. I had a debit card, and that was it. I was one of those who "didn't believe in spending money you don't have". But just because you have a credit card, that doesn't automatically mean you HAVE to spend it up to its limit. That's where the responsibility comes in.

Now that I'm in my late twenties, it's really starting to hurt me that I have virtually no credit score whatsoever. (I do have a rating based on student loans, but that's it). If you don't want to make a lot of large purchases on credit cards, that's fine. But owning one (or a few) and proving you can manage your money wisely is instrumental if you purchase a car or home.

About a year ago, I got a few credit cards to build a credit score, all with fairly low limits... and I don't buy anything I can't afford to pay off when the bill comes in. (There have been a few limiteds that I could have bought using CC, but I didn't because I wouldn't have been able to pay off the debt in a reasonable amount of time). Slowly but surely, I'm building a credit score. But it would have been a good thing to start earlier in life.

There's nothing inherently immoral or awful about managing credit cards wisely. Quite the contrary... being responsible with finances is actually a good thing.

    7. My paypal balance is my dolly fund. I don't use my credit card, and I don't use bank transfers into that account. If I want a new doll or whatever, then I try really hard to sell what I already have to put funds into my paypal account to buy the doll. The feeling is so amazing when you finally have enough to buy the grail. I've never bought anything that I couldn't pay for right then, so I don't really know how it feels to slowly pay off a doll. I imagine it's not as gratifying as just paying the dolly off immediately!

    8. Personally I hate throwing out the credit cards. I mean the APR and especially now days, I rather not think about how high a couple of them are for me at the moment, let alone the companies that want to raise my interest for no good reason even though I pay on time, etc.

Anyway... I rather save up my small paychecks and pay for the doll in whole. I know that it's mine and I've already paid the fees and shipping already. Or better yet, layaway! If there's a layaway plan then I can make small payments on the doll that I want with my paychecks. I mean I rather balance my checkbook than to just charge it to my account. It's just more money down the drain in my opinion with the interest. Besides the whole debt to credit ratio and with a hobby like this can definitely change your score.

    9. This, one hundred percent. These days, if you don't have some sort of credit history, good luck making the larger purchases with any sort of reasonable rates. My rating is in the tank, but it has nothing to do with dolls and was, way before I got into this hobby.

I have one card that I use for doll purchases, and I'm not allowed to buy more until I have it payed back off each time. Other then that, I do layaway, usually. I'm just terrible at saving money.

    10. I dislike paying interest on credit cards, so my rule is that I have to be able to pay off my card in full when the bill comes due. So dolls fall under the same criteria as any other purchase for me -- if I don't have the money for it, I won't buy it.

Credit cards really are great for building credit history, though. Especially for those who have never financed a car or house, it's one of the best ways of showing reliable financial ability.

    11. I do not use my credit cards for dolls. Infact, I *never* use credit cards - but they are there for emergenices. I know if I charged one doll, I'd charge another, and another, because there are just so many out there that I like. Thankfully I'm only interested in the little guys, who jut so happen to be cheaper. But I can't and won't use a credit card for them.

    12. omg! instant gratification!?!?? lololol, this bjd hobby has made me more patient than i ever could have imagined....90+ day wait on a doll, paid in full at order....that is the antithesis of "instant gratification" :?

    13. I use my credit card for buying dolls because there is better protection for me as a customer, then I pay off the entire bill immediately. That way I'm not buying things on credit but I have room to dispute the charge if something goes wrong.

    14. I use my credit card to buy dolls but I always make sure I have the money saved up first. I don't like to have any debt.

    15. Actually... no, that's just patience. :|
You still get a massive emotional high KNOWING you've bought something. That's your instant gratification. The 90+ day wait could be your cooling off period, your anticipation or regret, but it's never the antithesis of instant gratification. In a way; it just makes you beg to buy another doll to get that gratification again during that wait.

Hopefully, I'll be so perpeptually worried about going overboard when I get a credit card, I won't do so :)

    16. ha ha, touche adhara...i have been known to buy another doll privately just to not have to wait forever for no doll while "in preparation" LOL

    17. While there's nothing wrong about buying a doll on credit, you need to keep in mind that it still must be paid for. I learned this the hard way, not just with dolls but other things as well. So as long as you keep in mind whether your personal finances can handle the debt or not, you should be fine. And honestly, sometimes the only way to buy something is to use a credit card. Not all companies take Paypal.

    18. I use my debit card... not quite the same as credit. It still runs the same, but the money is taken right out of my bank account, rather than me having any bills. >_>

    19. i wanna pay off my dolly straight away and not have to slowly pay with a credit card. it seems unreliable.... i don't know why...

    20. My first doll I bought on a debit card, but I put it on layaway... so I'm only paying 1/3 every month. My second doll I bought with my credit card, and I'm paying the bill monthly, in whatever increment I can afford. My personal philosophy with my credit card is to keep my balance under $500. I'm a little over this month, but my next paycheck will be going almost solely into that bill. So... I guess I don't see the difference? It's all electronic money for me, and I'm wary about things that pull funds directly from my bank account. I'd rather have that illusion of security offered by the extra step.
