1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Calling BJDs "It"

Jul 13, 2010

    1. I also always use he or she when I talk about dolls on Russian.

    2. All my dolls are boys on boy bodies, so I call them all he/him. (:

    3. I know they are just dolls, inanimate objects, but my two look like tiny baby girls, so when speaking about any one of them, (or writing about them in posts), I use "she" and "her". Even though using "it" would be more appropriate, it just doesn't feel right to me.

    4. I usually refer to my doll as "The boi" or he though when he's irritating me or being a pain he is it. My mother will come over and see him sitting in the corner with wig off and ask what's wrong, I will respond to the manner of "it's being a little jerk again" lol.

    5. In spanish everything has a gender, even things, so we always talk about our dolls as "he" or "she".
For example, "head" is femenine, "body" is masculine, "computer" can be both femenine or masculine depending on the country.

    6. I call them "he" or "she", but I don't mind when people don't. I never forget that the dolls are still just human-shaped collections of resin, vinyl, or plastic, even if they're ones that we might really like and even form emotional bonds with.

    7. I always say he or she, and I don't think I've ever heard anybody in the hobby refer to their doll as an "it". People who are not in the hobby, however, generally refer to that in that context. Because to them they're nothing more than objects or possessions. The only exception to this, is my cousin and best friend, Tiffany. She always talks to me about them like they're real people. She's the only family member I have who accepts my dolls. She even LIKES them! She's always asking to hold them and show them to people and helping me with photoshoots. I love it!

    8. I prefer to call my dolls as their gender said what they are so my dolls are for me "she" or "he". Because they are like my children so I don't want to call them "It". They are dear and important to me, so I call them for that name which I will call them if they are like a real humans.

    9. My dolls are never 'it' - they are referred to as 'my girls', even by my family!

    10. My doll will never be "it" I'd be pretty angry if someone called dear Ayane an "it" It's happened previously.

    11. I usually use "he" or "she" and with some brands that are gender specific I will only use the feminine or masculine form to talk about them.
For example with the Dollfie Dream line, even if I am not talking about a particular doll, I usually say she.

    12. I have a doll on the way and I use 'he', even though I speak Chinese and when you refer to anyone, or anything that has a specific gender.. it's 'it' unless you literally go "BOY is going to blah blah blah.." So.. I am using 'it' in a way, but of course I know the doll is a boy, so it doesn't matter too much.

    13. I definitely use he/she when I'm speaking of a specific doll whose gender is known to me.

When I'm speaking of a hypothetical doll, or giving an example related to dolls in general rather than any individual doll, I am likely to say "it," just because going through all the possibilities of gender with every mention is pretty verbally unwieldy.

    14. I usually try to call them a him or a her depending on their gender, but if I recognize it as a genderless mold(like some Yo-SD's are), or if I just can't tell what the gender is, then I'll call them an it.

    15. I always refer to dolls as their gender. I only might not if I'm talking to someone about a doll and they don't really understand and maybe think I'm talking about a person so I'll use 'it' to prevent confusion.

    16. I call dolls by their names, or gender specific pronouns..... But the people I know who aren't in the hobby use 'It' sometimes, and it bugs me a little. I always feel like I need to explain to them how, while dolls aren't people, per se, they are also not quite just 'things'.

    17. yes actually sometimes i did call them 'it' ~
like when my friends and i talk and just joking around by calling him creepy i just reply 'it does a bit' xD

i call my boy 'it' when i'm with my mom , because whenever i call him 'he' my mom always denied and said 'its a she , dear' even though i already show the part why he is a 'he' she still not convince ... :sweat

    18. I use "she" to refer to Caroline. I also call her by her name rather than "my doll", which seems like another thing non-doll people have a hard time with. It feels a little weird when people call her "it" because her body is obviously sculpted to look like that of a female's, so it seems like calling her "it" implies gender ambiguity to me, even though I know that generally you wouldn't call anything non-living he/she. Of course I'd never call anyone out on it or let it actually BOTHER me, it's just weird. Telling someone to call your doll "she" when they're obviously more comfortable calling her "it" seems really rude o__O

    19. I frequently call my dolls "it." When I am thinking of them in terms of character, I use s/he. For example "Hilary likes wearing fancy clothes. He loves lace and silk." However, if I am talking about the physical doll itself, I offten use it- "It was supposed to be a female originally, but I wanted it for my character, Hilary. So, I sanded down the chest and did some epoxy mods on it." I will say "it" if I am talking about things such as wigs or eyes most of the time as well. My family and some of my friends are more sensitive about this than I am, and they will often correct me if they hear me refer to one of my dolls as "it."
I must be an odd doll person. In my experience, usually I am the one being corrected or complained about for treating and refering to my dolls as if they are just objects while the people around me treat them as if they are living. XD

    20. I refer to my dolls as he's and she's. I've never really looked into why that is... I guess it goes into what the dolls mean to you and other such topics, but I don't know how I'd refer to a doll that is gender neutral. Would it be offensive? Demeaning to an object that I care a great deal about? I don't know.
It doesn't bother me when other people refer to their dolls or my dolls as it. They simply view them differently. When I notice that, however, I tend to reign in my personification of my dolls, though.
