Calling BJDs "It"

Jul 13, 2010

    1. I have considered not naming my doll, then you could call it whatever you want, whenever you want. I don't think it is a half bad idea but there is something nice about dolls having names.

    2. I am big on naming, but most of my group had names before they were dolls. I have this new guy I'm working on and it's a part of his natural psychic aura that people can't remember his name or his face so I had planned to not give him a name. However, I just got finished pics from the faceup artist and now I am thinking I will name him but I'll keep his name a secret. Just something for me to know. I have a few other dolls with secret names but I tend to have a name for people to call them by, it may be odd but I like having something that only I know about some of my dolls. >__<

    3. I ... I don't think I could do that. I tend to go nuts if I can't think of a name and character for my doll. But that's just me. :)

    4. I name all my dolls. Like, obsessively. To me it's one of the most fun things about having them. They get background stories in my mind, so of course they have names, too! Sometimes I'll keep a sculpt's default name, like when it makes sense or just sounds good (Frankenstein by Ringdoll, Roke by Fairyland) but for the most part I like to give them names myself. Usually a name will just come to me when I see his or her face. I'd feel terrible not giving a doll a name... kind of like how I feel terrible for the ones that have no faceups and no clothes. lol

    5. I don't have any dolls yet, my 1st one is still on layaway. HOWEVER, my planned dolls are all character shells. They have names, except for one. I have tried to name her time and time again, but nothing feels right. So, I've given up. She has a "working title", but I pretty much just refer to her as "my robo chick". And I'm 100% fine with that. We'll see if it changes when I finally bring her shell home, but I can definitely see how people would be fine without naming. I personally agree with what you said about a name solidifying a character/personality/whatever. Once I have a name, it is concrete.

    6. I can see the reasoning for wanting to do so and I also thought of having a nameless assembled doll/mannequin to try on different outfits and everything in general as well. Although now that I have a doll to do those sorts of things, it feels like i'd be denying her existence. I believe names are related to ones character, as it is one part of your life for us while growing up. Society warps the way names are viewed, be it bad or good, and how you interpret it will influence how your personality develops. In the end, I'll probably be naming that doll something akin to her morphing powers.

    7. I don't think I would ever not name a doll that I liked, I really like naming things for some reason so it would take some of the fun out of it for me. My friend and I even named our rental car and GPS on our vacation XD plus saying "my doll" as the only means of identification would be hard since I already have 7 and want many more! How would I discern one from another? If I don't like a doll however I usually can't come up with a name and end up selling it.

    8. It's impossible not to name a doll because usually my dolls already have names before I hit the "buy now" button :sweat

    9. oh Nefla reminded me of that I also name all my computers and hard drives... my car has a name too. basically i'd say you become more attached to things when you give it names or unless you intentionally want to keep a distance.

    10. I did have this problem for a little while with both of my dolls. My King Yuha I could not name for a few days but finally found a name for him. My Clozel is still nameless. But in this case I'm just too darn lazy to think up a name for her XD

    11. I only have one doll with a name and little back story. The rest are just dolls.

    12. To be quite honest I can never see myself not naming one of my dolls or characters.

Hell I had a hard time naming my Deadman Wonderland OC....

She wound up being named Nanashi...

Take a good guess what it means.

      Give up?

      Nameless.

    13. My dolls did not have names for a bit just because I couldn't think of what to name them but I do know my friend sometimes would just rather not name them unless they were based off of an OC of her's.

    14. Has anyone else done this (not naming a doll)?

Many people don't... or they just keep the Sculpt Name. I can understand just sticking to the Sculpt Name. I've been tempted to do that before. But I feel like I really need to name my dolls to make them more "Mine." Although I don't stick with the names much and usually refer to me "Sculpt Name," since it's easier for people to know what I'm talking about! I don't feel it's important to establish the Name (and therefore, the distinct character, beyond just being the Doll/Sculpt). My dolls are dolls first and not always characters.

Would you ever consider doing it? Why/why not?

I haven't had any reason to deliberately not name a doll. And I really like names, so even though I may be stumped for a great name that means something to me, I'll still TRY HARD to dig up a significant name. But if I had a good reason, sure, I'd consider it! Why not?

I really don't think there are "rules" to what you can do with dolls. Whatever you wish to do with dolls is fine, I think.

Have you ever even thought about it before?

When I have a hard time thinking of what kind of name to give a doll, I've thought about not giving it a name. But I feel bad if I don't name a doll, so I force myself to name them. I don't feel bad because of peer pressure! I just feel like I'm being neglectful of my doll in a way. :sweat

    15. I always name my BJDs. I just always seem to find a name that suits them better than their sculpt name, and I like calling them by a name. I DO have an off-topic fashion doll that I call by her company-given character name. That job was all done for me.

    16. I'm the same way, it really depends on the doll. A lot of times I get more enjoyment out of fixing up (or restoring, modding, painting or what have you) the doll than thinking about it fitting a certain character.

    17. I actually tried to not name my Yo-SD Isao Nanjou when he arrived.... I didn't have a character made up for him, I just wanted him because he was Isao Nanjou, and I just intended to have him around to look at. I was just going to call him Isao or Chibi. But, as will happen, a name fell accidentally out of the sky (a viewer's suggestion) and stuck to him. Once that happened, he got himself a personality to go with. Now that he is Nava, he's just eversomuch more One Of The Guys here.

    18. I find that I have to have *something* individual to call them... but for at least a couple of my crew, that ended up being a descriptive title rather than an actual name.

The Mystic and the Archivist have never had personal names, and probably never will.

    19. As unlike some other collectors here, I am not getting a doll as to express someone in the stories I create.
There can be a few cases like:
      1. I am getting a doll because I like that mold/doll in the first place, and I will allow them to develop their own personalities based on the "energy they exert" and how they "interact" with my other dolls, if you get what I mean:cool:. They don't neccessarily have a name given by me than their default name.
      2. Given what I like to do is to recreate an existing person/character most of the time than creating my own, sometimes I would identify/name them after the characters that I like:celebrate And they are that character for me, in BJD form:dance

P.S. I might have name some of my dolls, but actually for the most of the time, I call my dolls based on their default name than the name I gave them:lol:

    20. Honestly, I find NOT naming a doll very strange. I can see why you want to do it, but I don't think I would.
