Calling BJDs "It"

Jul 13, 2010

    1. I've never named any of my dolls.. I just call them by their company given name haha! I can't think of any names. Dx

    2. I don't name most of my dolls unless I've customized them which is very rare with my bjds. (I mainly customize blythe dolls)
I have a Leeke world Mabel and Mikhaila and I'm just happy calling them Mabel and Mikhaila.
I think it's mainly because I don't make them have enough characteristics of their own. :(

    3. I named my dolls by name of my favorite flowers or a name of character in the book .. It made me feel closer to them !

    4. Though this is a very interesting concept, I don't think I could do it for several reasons (no particular order)

      - I like thinking up names, very very much :)

      - the dolls that kept their sculpt names have nice ones (Cookie, Leira, Bella) which happened to stuck. Plus nothing else seemed to fit them. With my first dolls the problem might have been that I was having trouble naming something that is essentially an object, but I have gotten over that, lol.

      - several of my dolls are shells of OC's that had names before they were dolls

      - I love combining outfits and wigs and eyes until I get it right, but then I hate to change that again; I actually tried a more fluid approach, but it basically means that I just find myself wanting a different doll to try out a different concept on, so I can display the finished "look" and enjoy it (semi-)permanently. Also, when this happens, the doll in question seems to "want" to be that way in my mind, meaning that I have difficulty getting it to look right to me in anything else, much less a completely different style. So my dolls all have at least default wigs and clothing styles (I'm slightly more open on eyes and shoes :))

      - for a while I was afraid that not naming a doll would make me bond with them less, but since I've sold a few with given names and kept the ones with their sculpt names, this is definitely not true, lol. My little Hannah is just an excuse to buy cute things, she has no character of backstory (even though she might one day), but I did know almost instantly that she needed to be named Hannah. Weird how these things work...

    5. I have two BJDs that don't have name. Somehow I can't find name what would suit them and also, they just don't need it. : > Such a character they are, it just seems normal that they don't have a name.

    6. Personally I really can't relate... I can't seem to bond with them if they lack names and characters... all of my dolls are OCs no less, so I suppose that's part of the problem. On the scarce occasion I bought a doll just because I fell in love with it I formed an OC to go with them before they came home, thus they had also already received their name along with it.

    7. If my doll is not a specific character with the existing name ,then the doll remains without a name and change the image

    8. I know some call dolls "it" because they are dolls but I feel that dolls have genders for a reason. Its like if you have a cat or dog and you have them fixed, you don't start calling them "it" you say "here girl/boy!" I don't like it when someone says "it" about dolls or anything with feeling in general, even if it's a doll.

    9. If someone calls their doll "it", it's fine for me..
I do say "it," when I'm talking about the doll as an object..but usually i prefer call the dolls by their gender..^-^

    10. I almost always refer to my dolls be their gender. Saying "it" feels a bit unnatural to me. After all, my dolls do have the parts, do they not? That, and they represent characters that I've created that have genders. But, I acknowledge that to some people it seems that I think that the doll is alive, so I will use "it" on occasion. As for what others call their dolls- not really any of my business. What's so nice about this hobby is that everyone seems to do it a little differently. But, all of my friends with dolls use "he" or "she" or the doll's name when referring to them.

    11. I uses "my doll" when talking to non doll people... but usually I just uses he/him.

    12. Eh, I've been known to call children it, so I wouldn't get chuffed if someone called my doll an it.

I'll use it when referring to them more as an object than as the character, such "I have a Bluefairy May. I find 16mm eyes fit it better than 14mm" as opposed to "I like dressing Natsume in blue because he looks good in it"

    13. I use it when I'm around non doll people because I feel like they don't really care enough or would notice if I used gender specific terms.
When I'm around people who actually know about my dolls I usually just say the doll's name.

    14. I don't typically call BJDs 'it' because, first and foremost, it's impossible in my language. xD In greek "doll" (koukla) is a female-gendered word, so the furthest I've gone to calling them "it" is when I refer to one of my male dolls as a female, I suppose.

    15. I feel SUPER awkward calling dolls "it", especially when they have a clearly defined sex. Sometimes I'll follow suit when a non-doll person says "it" so I don't weird them out, but I almost always use gendered pronouns otherwise, it just feels wrong not to.

    16. It depends on the situation with me. Sometimes I'll call the doll "it" while other times I'll refer to it by its sex.

    17. I usually call them "he" or "she". "It" just sounds weird to me.

    18. I tried too hard naming my dolls. They really don't need them.

    19. I get dolls with a character in mind always. The only exception is when I have a freebie head or something from an event. Then I need to spend the time figuring out if they work as anyone. I'd never not name complete doll.

    20. I usually say 'it' when I'm talking to someone who isn't into the BJD hobby.

But in my head, my doll is 'he', and when I talk to anyone who knows anything about him, I use 'he'.
