1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Calling BJDs "It"

Jul 13, 2010

    1. I've always called dolls, figures, statues and action figures according to the gendered pronoun that they are supposed to represent (if there is a discernible gender).

I'll call bodies and heads 'it' because those words aren't gendered (though if I'm speaking about a character, then I will say 'his or her head'). To me, assigning 'it' to an obviously gendered doll is rather stranger than doing otherwise.

    2. I usually call my doll "she" or "he", but when I talk to someone, who isn't really interested in dolls and might actually hate them, I use word "it".

    3. I think it really depends what's being talked about. I usually refer to things with gender-specific pronouns, but I do this for other things I collect, too.

    4. I call them "her" or "him", but never "it"...

    5. I don't think I've ever called a doll 'it'
For me, It's kind of like talking about a person and calling them 'it' instead of he/she :c

    6. I call my dolls it once in a while. If someone isn't much into dolls, I'm more likely to use it and call my dolls by name less. Well, I used to go "my girl" and "my boy" a lot, but now I have more than one boy and girl so that doesn't work anymore.

    7. I never call my dolls 'it'. That word just sounds downright rude to me and I never use it for anything alive or resembling something alive. Also, 'it' makes the thing you're referring to as something repulsive or disgusting. I don't like it at all.

    8. I dont think ive ever called my dolls It. When talking about my dolls I generally refer to them as They, Them, He, She, or my Dolls. I think once you create a back story for your dolls they're more human so you cant think of them as an it.

    9. My doll is female so I call her "it". I get slightly annoyed when my non-bjd friends use the pronoun "it" but the word is also usually accompanied by a provincial comment on how dolls are creepy and weird.

    10. I usually use "IT" for those who are not familiar with the hobby. I understand it's not a common hobby so I don't try to give the impression to others.
But if it's my friends or close family members I use the him or her pronoun ^^

    11. I refer to them as my boys, never called them an "it" as it seems impersonal to me.

    12. I have never called Meimei "IT"... I usually call him "my boy", "Mei" or just "he"...ok I admit..sometimes I call him "blackmailer" or "monster which trying to spend all my money" xD
But never "it"...I believe he has soul...and he would hate me if I would call him or talk about him so impersonal.

    13. i think people who dont care, dont know much or consider doll just as normal objects might call them like that, but i think most of doll owner keep dolls with their love.& with love, we wouldnt calling them like that just as why we giving them a name~XD

    14. even though there dolls "it" just doesnt seen right to me. I mean if other people want to say "it" referring to there dolls but for me i'd say "he or she".

    15. When referring to dolls in general, "it" or "they" are the words I use. Talking about certain dolls or my dolls I refer to them as I see them.

    16. I usually use "he" or "she". Very rarely do I ever use "it". Even when I'm talking to others who aren't doll collectors, I'll call Wally a "he", if only to get across the fact that he is, in fact, a he.

If I can tell someone is getting weirder out though, I'll say "the doll" instead.

    17. I do refer to my dolls as "its" to people unfamiliar with dolls, I've noticed that straight up saying he or she to someone who isnt as familiar with them kinda creeps them out, since the doll usuallly creeps them out enough already. XD

    18. Me, too. People usually give enough of a side-eye to the dolls in general. I don't make it worse by using gendered pronouns unless I know they get the reason for the usage or I have to clarify gender of a doll I'm showing them. They're dolls, they don't have feelings, which means they don't care whether I call them "it" or their proper gendered pronoun. It isn't as though I'm calling a real live person "it", so I cannot imagine why it could be an issue. I actually have one doll which should more properly be referred to as "it" rather than he, but (obviously) a lot of people seem to have a problem with using that. I just go with "he", usually, for the sake of avoiding potential "OMG why are you calling your dollie it? He's obviously a boy!" (It's a fallen angel character, so it doesn't actually have a gender. In-universe, it just happens to be hosted in a male body at the moment.)

    19. I have always felt this way too. As a matter of fact even my toy animals and ponies get assigned a gender based on if they appear feminine or masculine. Sometimes what makes them appear feminine is something as simple as colors.

    20. I always use he or she when I talk about my girls & boys :D It doesn't bother me what other people say but I think most doll lovers use gender when talking about their dolls.
