Changing your doll's name

May 16, 2006

    1. I'm kinda having this situation now, I got my latest doll a while ago and already had a name and personality ready for him. Now I've been thinking, that maybe I should think about another name and change the personality slightly. I think this is what I'll end up doing, but I'm not completely sure yet.
I think I agree with Utsumi - if I changed the doll's name, maybe I'd learn to love him even more. So in my opinion it could even help bonding issues, not cause them.

    2. My poor Camine went through a few name changes before I found *the one*. While finding the right name was a problem, bonding never was. I've loved him from the moment he arrived.

    3. My Persia's gone through two name and character changes before I got one that really stuck. Finding the right name I think helped me bond, when before I was thinking of selling him.

    4. If I'm going to change a doll's name it's because I wasn't bonding with him in the first place, so I don't see how a name change could make it more difficult. It would seem the name change would be the first step into making that connection all the more stronger.

That said, I've only had one doll who's actually had a real name change, and even then it was a complete character change as well. I originally bought my MSDoll head to fill the role of one of my less developed (looks wise, not personality wise) characters, but after a few weeks of him being here I could just feel that it was not working. While I was hesitant at first to give him the role of another character, it didn't take long at all for it to just click, and I feel sort of silly for not doing it this way to begin with.

Besides that though, alot of my characters have two (or more) names anyway, as they come from various storylines all mixed into one that require them to have so. So I have Belial/Basil, Fyedka/Fakia, Prince/Whiteface, Sethos/La Arana...usually I stick with their original name when referring to them, but I've no problem switching over to their secondary names if the situation so requires it, and it doesn't change their character at all. After all, we humans often go by many nicknames ourselves, sometimes of names that don't even sound remotely similar to our birthnames.

    5. LOL I wish I could claim it as mine, but it's actually from a YouTube video that I love called "So You've Decided to Become a Goth" (/ot)

    6. Well, I have to admit that I thought about changing Jasper's name because he's blonde and people ask if he is Twilight-related a bit too often. However, I had the name planned for my first male doll before I even knew the books (or subsequent movies) existed, back when I planned to get an SA Bernard. It took me until early '08 to finally get a male doll, though, and by then I had shifted my attention to LW Mihael, but the name really suited him for me. I decided not to compromise my initial vision based on the ebb and flow of popular culture.

    7. Kinda... I called him Swiper when I got him but it was a nickname from the start. His real name is Stefan... and now I always call him Stefan, and never Swiper XD

    8. The doll that I want he had to go through 2 name changes until deciding on the third one. His first name was going to be Fei, Helio, and now Carnage.

    9. This is my questioning of the moment. I have my Lati Blue Cara since June 2009 and I named Jane. Time passed and I have wanted him to change his name. I want a name that would make her grow old. I read the trilogy of Millennium and I loved the character of Lisbeth. So, I feel inclined to name my Cara Lisbeth now. This is my questioning. :?;)

    10. I have changed dolls' names before, but a character change went along with it. I think it would be difficult to keep a character the exact same and change the name as the name becomes part of who they are, though an alternate spelling would probably work.

    11. I've changed the spelling of Maikah's name slightly, I added an 'a'. But I'm still trying to find a name that sticks to my Lati K boy. He just doesn't seem to be any of the one's I've tried >.<. It doesn't help that his personality is also in flux. Eventually I'll get him straightened out...

    12. My dolls got their names after I saw them alive. Mostly it looked like this: I imagined what style would suit the doll and some features of their personality (though they don`t really have one, they are play things more than characters). Then I made a list of names that I thoughht would be fitting the style and the character and chose the best one.

One of my dolls inherited his name from the previous owner. Before, his name was Raphael and I only switched "ph" to "f". I wanted his new name to honor the character he was before, but also to show he`s changed.

    13. I've changed my doll's name because It's not suit her character. Before I got her, I was planning about getting same mold so they can be twins. But I got a different mold and I couldn't say her twin name. So My friend helped me chose a new one.

    14. the only time i've ever changed one of my dolls names was when i switched my Volks MSD Myu from a girl to a boy XD
Dinah was the original name~ i changed it to Daniel ^^ then when i got my Volks MSD Sweet Dream Myu i gave her the name Dinah cause i still like that name :3

    15. I'm extremely obsessive about names, so I went through 3 or 4 names with my girl before I settled on Lainey. I insisted on naming her before I even finished paying her off so I expected changing her name but it took a bit to find the perfect name!

    16. I've had one doll for a little over a year now, and I keep thinking about changing his name, but I feel funny about it, like its wrong or something, so I have yet to change it ^.^

    17. I am considering changing my boy's name. I bought my Lu-wen because I just love the lu-wen mold. I didn't really have a character for him. He is a small part character in another story line but I am sooooo bad with names. I have to play with them for a long time before I find just the right name for a character. I have written whole stories with ____ or a single letter to represent a character because I couldn't come up with a name. So with my Lu-wen I just used Kisten which is a name from a book series I've read. I don't actually like the series but liked the character Kisten and liked the name. Now that Kisten has really developed his personality and I have written him more as a character I am starting to feel uncomfortable about his link with that other character. It's not that he has that personality, or really any of the traits of the other character they just share a name. I know there are really no "original" names out there, almost everything has been used, but knowing that this is the name of a character from a series I have read isn't working for me. But I can't picture him having any other name. I don't want him to change if I give him a new name. He is Kisten to me. So I either have to get over the link or rename him and hope it doesn't harm our bond.

    18. I have a new girl who I had been calling by her mold name (which is a completely ugly name). I didn't have a character for her first, I just thought she was really pretty when I decided to put her on layaway. I figured I would name her when she got here. I've been calling her by her mold name so long that I don't have a clue what to actually name her. But I'm at the whole "should I rename?" dilemma as well. I want to rename but I'm afraid nothing will sound right other than what I've been calling her.

With one of my heads, I called her Ava for a long period while she was on her way to me...then when she got here I realized she didn't actually fit my OC Ava well enough so she became another one of my OC's named Neeka. I didn't really feel bad about changing her name because when I got a wig and eyes on her I just thought "Neeka!" instantly.

    19. I've changed tons of their names. I like to make sure they have names I like and I'm really fickle and fall out of love with names often.
I don't see any problem with it as long as you feel it's right. It's not like you have to go through some complicated process to change it or anything. Plus you can always change it back.

    20. Hah, I'm also a Libra, so maybe your theory is true! xP
I did change my boy's name, although a year after having him. He was originally called Josh, but I changed it to Quinn. I'm still in the habit of referring to him as 'Josh' though...
