Changing your doll's name

May 16, 2006

    1. I'm in the 'transition' stage right now of changing my boys name. He was originally named Yukio- Ki for short- but after a few years of him just being... around... I started to really, uh, I guess the most easiest way to put is that I got to know him ^^; Before when he was Ki he was just an overly fem doll that was just kind there, but now I've put a little colour on his face and have spent more time with him- just him; no wig or clothes, sitting around in pieces for a while too, and I've decided that he's not Ki anymore. He is something else entirely.
While a name didn't readily come to me, I decided on Dorian because he is very fem and I'm not planning on him getting and keeping a look, he will be a constantly changing portrait. But I've been catching myself referring to him as 'my boy' instead of any name x3

    2. I don't think it's wrong to change their names after you've had them either. Sometimes the names you plan for them just don't seem to fit them.
I originally bought my E-an (Hana) and Tender E-an (Isebella) to be a doll version of myself and alter ego. So when i found a perfect doll version of my husband i jumped on it. But after he arrived and i placed them together they just didn't have that spark that i was looking for. So i ended up chaning my girls names because Allan would always be Allan.
But it worked out well because i did have two openings for my girls and they fit so much better in these rolls then the previous ones. I actually love them so much more because of it!

    3. *points to siggy*

At first when I got my doll I thought I would stick to their names. Now I'm gonna make changes to their story so inevitably so do their characters along with looks and names (except for my first doll, Daniel, who is gonna retain his name). alas... I guess I'm just fickle minded lol

p/s: names do matter to me... if I cant get the "right" name, i'll find it hard to bond coz he seems rather incomplete... or maybe i'm just weird lolz

    4. Sometimes I rename dolls, sometimes just changing the name abit will help me bond with them more. There's also when you get a new wig or eyes and somehow the doll seems like someone different suddenly. I don't think there's anything wrong with changing names of a doll if it's what makes you happiest.

    5. I would never change a name, because I always know what the "right" name is from the start .. xD

    6. Jacinthe originally was named Yacinthe because I figured I would really like for her to have a name that began with Y. But the more I did research on names, and the more I wrote and said her name, it just seemed easier vocally to pronounce her name with J, so it stuck.

Mordecai had his name changed for a while. Originally it was Mordecai Auguste Gaetano Emmanuel, and then I thought I really liked Tristram so I decided to incorporate that into Mordecai's name, and thus he became Tristram Raphael Isidore Solomon Mordecai. But then I realized that I like the name Tristram enough for it to be its own doll, so now Mordecai is back to having his original name, and Tristram will be his own doll someday and he just happens to be Mordecai's cousin.

    7. As for me, I tend to come up with characters first and then find a doll that suits that character. Megumi was a rare exception; I purposely didn't contemplate anything about her name or personality until I had her out of the box and in my hands.

In regard to changing a doll's name, well, sometimes the name evolves. Chae-ri's original name was actually Sakura (back when she was Japanese) and became Chae-ri when she turned out to be of Korean stock. (For those who don't know, "Sakura" means "cherry", and she went by the name Cherry even when her name was Sakura.)

    8. I keep changing the name of my floating head, I can't decide =A=;;... I think when I finally get it a body and have him completed, it'll be easier to settle on a name because I'll have a better grasp on his "character". I've wanted to change a letter in one of my doll's name because I wasn't sure of the pronunciation at first... but after having named it for so long, I felt that I should just leave it... and it stuck. :P

    9. I'm having issues with that currently. Typically, when I name a doll, I don't change it. I'll add a family name or a middle name if one clicks but that's about all the changing I do. One of my boys, Alec, went from Alec Michael to Alec Lucian.

But lately I've been considering switching a few of my dolls' first names. There's Hinata, whose character is underdeveloped, and Akihara 'Sugar', who is a blank floating head with so much character he can harly contain it. I wasn't sure if the name Akihara was right for him and I'm still not 100% positive.
And then there's my Unoa, who is characterless and nameless. She's been that way for some time and it's driving me insane! She's a beautiful doll and I don't want to sell her, but I cannot think of a name for this girl. The character she was supposed to be fell through, so I don't know.

Sorry this got a little off topic:sweat

    10. Yeah. :) I changed my Luts Blanchet's name, from Chikako to Yoshiko.
No matter I change my dolls' character or name, I will still love them. ^^

    11. I recently changed the name of my Rosette Doll Fir. I'd named her Hedwig back in January, but it just made me think of the Harry Potter owl too much. About a week ago, I changed her name to Valdis. It's odd that I chose that one because I nearly named her that when I got her!

    12. My first boy was originally called Haven, and I always knew he had a name before then, but I never gave it much thought. Now, he's called Daisuke (or just Dai), which can be confusing to people who check out my work, 'cause I sometimes call the same doll two different things, or put a "/" between his two names. He simply answers to both, or one or the other depending.

My latest (a floating head) gave me conniptions for six months. I couldn't settle on a name or character for him. He went through six or seven different names & characters before finally settling on one.

    13. it´s hard for me to rename once i´ve given them a name

    14. I have never done it, basically because of the fact that ten of my twelve BJD are already given characters with already given names. Only the other two are own creation ones, but I thought about their personalities, main stories and names at the same time. They fitted so well and I got so convinced since the beginning that I have never thought (Nor think to do so in the future) about changing the name of any of them.

That does not mean I do not understand there may be reasons for a change or even several changes depending on the case. In my opinion, and about names, what really matters is the owner of the BJD is happy with his/her BJD's names.

    15. I did change the name of 2 of my dolls *One in the process of and other being sold* but I do it more to change the character and not only the name.

Most of the time even if I do not like a certain name I will keep it since it is their name and I cannot see them with another one XP
Though it does not stop me from making up wierd nicknames that I can use when I'm tied of using the "real" one ;3

Changing names is hard though as when I do it it takes some time to really think of that doll as another one. Like right now one of my doll is named Envy and I have some difficulty telling myself its Ignorance now XD
Though the character is really not the same and I'm sure it will help when I change is face-up ^^
Doesn't help my friends though!! XD

    16. Sometimes if one of them change a lot (wig, makeup...) and i dont like the old name, i look for another name :)

    17. I didn't really change my girl's name as such.. but I kind of tweaked it a bit. Basically I had her name from the moment I ordered her, I knew I was going to call her Elyssa. I thought I'd call her Elly occasionally as a nickname, but now it turns out I call her Elly more than I call her Elyssa... which was not originally planned :XD:

    18. I have changed my dolls names more then once. My first one was when I got Malik from Yugioh, he looked awesome and I loved him a lot. But where as i wasn't planning on getting any other yugioh characters he didn't really fit in with my other dolls. and I sometimes wonder if I made the right choice of changing him from Malik to someone else. then I look at Lance and decide that even if I do slightly regret it, I love Lance to much. ^-^

see, for me it's not just changing a dolls name. it's changing their whole character. I feel bad for doing it because my friends always look at me weird when i do that. But...I can't sell a doll. if it doesn't work for the character he or she currently is, I just can't bring myself to sell the doll. So instead, I make a new character based around that dolls mold. My other ones are Shiko into Ryan and then Kit into Hotaru and just recently Gaz into Avalon, but that one is because i'm getting an SD version of Gaz. I have good excuses for each one, and I personally don't see a problem with changing a name of a doll (or even their character). But once the character is actually set, their names don't change again.

    19. Hi all, I will keep the names that was chosen for the dolls. It's easier on my memory...lol

    20. I have never changed a name, when I choose one I keep it forever. But I can spend months looking for a name, while I'm deciding which doll to buy...
