Changing your doll's name

May 16, 2006

    1. I've changed the name of my boy a couple times, because his character keeps changing:doh. I'm sure it'll end up changing again pretty soon as well, since I might have figured out a good direction for his character finally.

One of my girls didn't suit a character I had planned for her, so she got renamed too.

    2. naming my dolls is a big deal for me, it gives them character, it gives them their sense of being unique...
Your name makes who you are... So for my dolls I do give names that really fits name ( to be sure ifi it is the right one, there is just an invisible electric feel in me...soubnds weird* but it just clicks) when I call them as if they reply... that is how I gave them names, and their names have special meanings for me and it is unique, I just added though surnames to my dolls lately and they sound sweet!

    3. My first doll was everything I wanted. She looked like a silent movie heroine. I named her Brienna Rose (paying no attention to a last name). When I decided to start buying dolls to be the characters of my little world, I found she had no place. Attempting to give her a place, I made her related to someone and gave her their last name. That definitely did not work out. Now I find that I ignore her most of the time. It's terrible, but true. I can't bear to sell her because she was my first, but I just don't find satisfaction playing with her anymore. I'm not certain what I should do about it.

So for me changing the name is a no-no. Maybe I waited too long for it. I start out with characters in mind and once I've played with the doll with that name, they're stuck. I'm more willing to sale the doll to find a better fit for the character than I am to change the dolls name to something else. Someday there might be a sculpt I love so much that I'll own a doll that has nothing to do with my other characters, but it certainly isn't now.

    4. I'm new to being a BJD owner, and I've already had some strife about names. You'd think I was having an actually, living, breathing baby and fighting with the in-laws about the grandchild's name by the way people have acted towards some of the name ideas I've had for my doll. -__- It's frustrating, and I'm sorry to say I'm second guessing myself with names.

Right now, the name that's sticking out to me is Misha, for a male doll. My younger sister and I both really liked the book "Milkweed", and the main character's name in that book is Misha. When I showed my sister the doll that I wanted to buy, she cried out "THAT'S MISHA, SISSY! That's him." And well, the name is starting to stick for me. ^w^ But I've had some people stick their noses up to it, and some feel it's too feminine. >.> So, I'm, at the moment undecided.

    5. I had to change the name of one of my dolls. A person whom I had severe disagreements with had changed their name to the same name that my boy had and it was making me feel very uncomfortable. I decided that I either had to sell him or do something about his name. I would have sold him but he is slightly damaged and would be impossible to replace (he was a contest prize and extremely rare these days, I haven't seen one for sale in 2 years).
Names aren't written in stone for me. They may change many times but it doesn't change the character of a person. Most of the names my dolls have are based on where they are from, not who they are. You all know the quote "A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

    6. Vesper technically has three different names. I got into a bad habit of calling him by his sculpt name (Mihael). I really wanted to give him a unique name, and Virgil had meaning to me so it was going to be that for a while but I got annoyed with people saying I'd named him after a Thunderbirds character (I didn't know that, I've only seen it once and don't like that show). For some reason Vesper stuck in my head - I wanted it to begin with V. I decided that his code name would be Vesper and his 'real' name would be a mixture of Virgil and Mihael, so I messed with the spelling a bit and came up with Verhael as his real name.

Deep down though, he's always my Mihael :)

    7. Never thought of this, but my newest addition is a character based on a person who used several names, probably to keep his real identity out of the picture considering his past with the Shinsengumi. But I'm keeping him true to the character in Rurouni Kenshin :)

But I am expecting a tiny who might have a career of several characters because little kids grow up and resin doesn't ;).

    8. I changed my SD's name soon after getting her. Her name didn't fit her. She soon became my username character: Tera Rose. She just seemed so much like a character that I've built since middle school.

It was an interesting change from Salanea to Terra, but Terra seems to fit more. And she seems to be happy because of it! :D

    9. This just happened to me. I'd worked very hard to complete my collection of 7 dolls, and I knew without a shadow of a doubt that the new head sculpt I'd just purchased would be absolutely perfect for my old persocom character (I'd never been able to fully bond with her original head for some reason.):sweat The new head was perfect, and I knew it immediately when I put it on her neck. The bond was instant! Yet something still seemed to be strangely amiss as I looked at her...like her character wasn't quite all the way there yet. Suddenly I had one of those "Eureka" moments and realized she needed a new name! So my very dramatically named "Imaginaria", who'd along the way become the very simply named "Angel", now became the very quirky named "Cobweb"...and all was right in my dolly universe once more!;) I guess her new head just demanded a new name.

    10. Not really changing their name completely, but adding last names. Nick didn't have a last name until recently... I try not to change them around too much.

    11. You just need to remember that the doll is yours and if Misha makes you happy, then that is the name you should choose. Incidentally, there is a male actor by that name (Misha Collins) and so don't worry about others thinking the name is too feminine. (Also: this site lists it as a Russian origin nickname for Michael or Mike. Apparently it means "who resembles God.") I actually like the other spelling of it (Mischa) a lot and have contemplated it once or twice myself.

    12. @ anjelchan:: Thanks for the encouragement about the name. I usually do research about some names, but that I did not know about the name Misha. And I like the spelling Mischa better, too. :) If I do go with that name, I think I'll change the spelling to that... it looks more... complete? xD I'm not sure how else to say that. ^w^ Thanks so much.

Another silly name that I came up with was Bory Allen. *kicks self* It just sounded so cute and silly. It was like a masculine version of the name Borealis, which is a name I really like. And the doll I'm getting is Bory from LUTs. :)

    13. I don't think there's any problem with changing the doll's name. If the name doesn't suit your doll, then change till it finally does.

    14. Oh... My first two (DOC) went through about 50 names each, before we finally settled on something. My unicorn babies were easier, since I knew I wanted to give them names from my favorite Unicorn books - limited options and all that.

I'm currently wondering if I want to change my new girl's name. I started calling my LoongSoul Emily "Vexen" before she even arrived. The name belongs to a minor Kingdom Hearts character, even though she isn't meant to be a character doll. (The original Vexen is actually male). The thing is, I've never played Kingdom Hearts. Or maybe that's why I was fine with the name in the first place; my knowledge of the original was more abstract.

And then, today, I was telling one of my co-workers about my new girl, and she mistakenly called her "Vesper." And that is also a really cute name and much softer sounding than Vexen. Sooo... I'm thinking about it. We'll see if it sticks.

    15. I want to change my doll's name. Right now his name is Royle. I'm not quite sure what kind of name I want to change it to... Actually I made up a name in a dream... I somehow remembered it. It's Rixillo... but I don't like it that much... haha. It reminds me of armadillo.

    16. Although I've thought about it, I decided against changing Gabriel's name after giving him a faceup.
Originally, as in, before he arrived, I had been calling him Felix. Because, well, thats what his site pictures made him look like. So for the month I was waiting, I just called him Felix. But of course, when I opened the box, he was DEFINATELY not a Felix. I spent nearly an hour staring at him thinking "This process would be so much easier if you talked!!" I finally narrowed it down to Gabriel or Zerik, and decided to make his full name Gabriel Zerik Fayber.

    17. I didn't experience this with a doll but I changed my hamster's name 'Batsu' to 'Chichi' after a few days of having her. And I have a friend who changed gender and changed names along with that. Another friend changed her name when she entered a new phase in her life and wanted closure from another. And a little girl I know, aged 6 at the time had a bully in her class with the same name. She was tired of being associated with that girl and she changed her name to her second name. In all these cases, the name-change was a positive thing and changed a lot! I think sometimes it's just neccessary for someone, doll or human, to take on another name in order to find their real selves!

    18. I changed my Soom Afi's name from Venny Venus to Topher (Short for Christopher Luwen).
The change was brought on because I put one of my other doll's wigs on him and he pulled the look off nicely :) If I had Venny's wig, then he would still be Venny.
I'm glad that I have Topher, since he's not as girl-y as Venny's character. ...But I'm still a wig short

    19. Actually, I sort of did this just recently xD Before I even got this boy, I had in mind two very different names, but they both fit him SO well. Eventually I decided on one name and planned to "save" the other for maybe another doll.

Though just recently I decided to give him that other name and make it his "birth" name, and then the one he has be just a nickname- since it's such a weird name it could easily be such, and actually makes more sense when it's a nickname and not a birth name xD

    20. I changed one of my dolls names because It didn't feel right from the start, I don't feel bad about it but I do hesitate sometimes because the characters these dolls represent are portrayed in a certain way. I want a name that feels right and don't give this aura that it'll change eventually, if you know what I'm saying but if I have to keep changing names to achieve that feeling, I will. x'D
