Changing your doll's name

May 16, 2006

    1. I don't think changing their name is wrong. With mine, I had a name picked out for her before she even arrived and called her that name for a little while afterwords. After having her for a day or two, however, I found that her name didn't really fit her personality or style so her name was changed to Erica.

    2. I changed my boy's name because the first one was too hard to pronounce. It had been Vorher, a character of mine from before he was a doll but I had to change it to Viktor (x_x);;

    3. Interesting thread!

I usually go through a long process when naming my dolls. Usually I have a character first and then I pick out a name that fits. When the dolls comes, I sometimes have to change that name again because it just doesn't seem right. With one doll that took over a week until I was sure, it was the right name. ^^ Leaving them blank actually helps with that for some reason.

However, I've never changed a name after I'd had the doll at home. Some of my dolls have aquired nick names over time and others have backstories that allow them to have more than one name.

    4. I just changed my BJD's name and story a little bit, or more just added story. I was bored with it, whats wrong with changing your BJD's name? I was going to sell him, but instead I just changed him, I like him a lot now ^^

    5. I have a Fairyland Littlefee Luna FS. My friend and I referred to her as Luna Rose before she came (she is Luna and her fullset is called Rose) and a little after for convenience's sake. I have hard the hardest time trying to name her.
Story wise, my 3rd BJD, who is on his way, names her 莲花.
He is not here yet and she still needs a name to change to that.
Luna Rose is fine, it's cute but it BUGS me that it's her default name, it really does.
I realized a couple of days ago her name needed to be french because her family name was and so are the names of the rest of her family. This made it a lot easier. I looked around for french first names and found Lucien which I LOVE... but it's masculine... So I'm thinking of settling with Lucienne. I'm not still quite sure but I'll try it out for a couple of days and see if it sticks. If not, back to name hunting!

I had a similar issue with him, the 3rd BJD. He is a withdoll rosybrown Juwel. I had a character I had been working on roughly from 2 years ago. As silly as this sounds, as soon as I saw his face and his wig I thought immediately of that character whose name was Vaughn. I implemented this character onto another story which I had, which made the name perfect for him. He is a foreigner trying to pass off as the same nationality as the family so he claims his name is Vaughn, which in a way gives away his identity because while to him it might sound French enough to him, to the family it sounds foreign and in fact, Welsh. This was great until I realized I had to come up with his real name, a Chinese word or name, which he covers up with the name Vaughn. This was impossible for me.

You really have to just brainstorm about all the aspects of the character and you'll find something that sticks as a name.

That's what I did for him. Looking at him, he reminded me of a warhorse. But storywise he wasn't born a killer. I looked for a horse that was well built but not menacing, like Vaughn. Eventually I found a gray baise horse whose looks and temperament suit Vaughn perfectly. Luckily, the baise horse is also known as the Guangxi as they come from that region. And that is how Vaughn also received the name 广西. (Still looking for a surname, but that's not nearly as important XDD)

In short (because that was a little tl;dr), yes I have changed my BJDs names. It's fine, just terribly difficult to do. My advice is brainstorm everything about your doll and you will find some aspect that help you find a name. Don't settle for just any name!

    6. The bf and I changed the name of one of our boys. His original name was "L" because he was cosplaying L from Deathnote. He started to become his own person though, so we really wanted to give him something that was his own, instead of just being L. We ended up renaming him to Lucius and giving him a new look. I think he's happier now to be able to be himself.

    7. Ohhh that is a good question. I have dolls that have changed what they go by as their story unfolds but excatly changing their full out name per se. I have thought about it but I think it depends on why you want to change the name. Is it because of your tastes changing is it the character changing or is it something else is this a new and different character that you are using the same shell for? I don't know its a good question. I don't think I would ever out right change a name but I have changed how a character behaviors, looks and dresses including hair and eyes so.

    8. I haven't really changed Chaeri's name, although I have spelled it differently in the past. The proper way to write her name in English is Chae-ri, but I like the way Chaeri looks better. And sometimes I write it as "Cherry" because, well, that's how it's pronounced. (Although the name "Chae-ri" actually means "white jasmine".)

    9. I just had this dilemma. I got a doll I have wanted for a long time. When I opened him his name just came to me.. it was perfect for him. Then I saw another doll on a yahoo group that was very similar and had the same name. I was really miserable because since we both post pics of our dolls I was afraid he would think I was copying. I had been sick when he posted his doll so I never saw it until after I posted my new doll. I reluctantly changed my dolls name.

    10. Yep, yep. My dolls come with no character, so sometimes, I mess up with the first attempt at creating one, especially if they turn out quite different in person than in photos. Most of the time, the names have to change as their characters change. Some dolls turn out to be totally different character than they were supposed to be, so, sure, name changes. X3

    11. I don't actually have any of my dolls yet, but they've all gone through names changes at least once for one reason or another. Same with their personalities, but that would be going off-topic. Sometimes you just find a name for them that suits them better.

    12. I have eight full dolls with me. I usually just pick a name quickly and never change it, but I had a sort of revelation about my next doll. I thought about her name but this would require changing one of my current doll's name as well.

The name I thought is of my favourite character from an anime series, I even already have the perfect doll in my wishlist (being wanting one for ages). I even unconsciously styled my current doll like her girlfriend in the series so changing her name seems fitting.
I had gave her blue eyes and noticed they didn't look right, I just thought she needed a different shade. The character has brown eyes so I tried her a pair, turns out brown eyes suits her.

I wanted to get her a partner. I thought about one male and one female doll, even planning to hybrid them to change their gender eventually, waiting for a sign to tell me which... guess I got it.
What I'm unsure about is that I don't want my dolls to cosplay someone. Not permanently at least.

    13. I'm absolutely awful at this, I'll give a character a name, then change it when I find them a better one! I always have to tell someone when I change it though, otherwise I don't remember their new name *_*

    14. I have changed my dolls' names three times. At first when I got them home I had a full story awaiting the dolls. I gave all names from the characters in my story and it fit them well for six years. During this period I had a short break in my part of the hobby and when I returned I felt like I needed a new start. I renamed my dolls and changed their story before I was forced into another break from the hobby as I got my daughter and a diagnosis which made it impossible for me to have any energy for anything else. Now I returned to the hobby once more. I currently work full time as an Author and I have created many characters in this time frame. Because of this, I changed my doll's personalities to fit the story that I write now, with a few twists and turns - and with a few exceptions. I also have one doll which is named after a character from a Chinese Webnovel called The King's Avatar / Master of Skills. He is new so he is the only one I have not changed the name of.

    15. I've changed the name of the doll I'm waiting on at least five times. I finally found a name that suits her, but since she hasn't come yet, I can only cross my fingers and hope for the best.

    16. You should rename your doll whatever you think his or her name is, just think about it like this, when you buy a doll from the manufacturer the "name" given is really no more a model/style/sculpt name then anything else.
David Kuncci from Dollshe kept his name because I liked it & his 1st name is the same as mine... Markus, better known as Drake from Ipelhouse came to me second hand with his new name from the repainter which again I liked, but when Enoch comes from Granado his name will change most definently lol.

    17. Yes, I have! In various ways.

Several dolls didn't work out as the character I planned, so I revamped the entire doll--name, character, story, wig, eyes, faceup, outfit. In these cases, it was just a complete redo and nothing remained attached to the old character/name.

Others have had last name changes when the character got married/divorced, or their parents got married and they took the step-parent's last name.

Then there are the ones who just changed for no real reason other than my own feelings on them. When I got my second doll, I planned to name him Blaize, but during the wait, I kept feeling his name should be Loki.

With Luc, I had planned to call him Lucas Brendan Hayden, but again while waiting on him, Hayden just felt wrong, and I kept seeing the name MacLaren everywhere--in books, on tv, around town, in a movie. So I changed it to Lucas Brendan MacLaren. About a month after he arrived, I still kept feeling that Brendan just wasn't a suiting middle name for him, and so he became Lucas Dylan MacLaren, and goes by Luc. His name finally feels right to me. The character did not change, just the name.

    18. I normally don't change character names unless the previous character isn't working for the multiverse my brother and I created. I recently had to do this for my character, Truffle (DZ Choco) who is now September aka Emmy and two other characters.

    19. All my dolls have a "default" name, so to speak, which is the name of their sculpt. Most of the time it fits them. But sometimes their sculpt name just doesn't fit once I style them into how they are going to stay, and then sometimes a new name comes up. That's only happened with three of my dolls, one today in fact. I bought half a dozen wigs trying to find the right one for her and finally got it! So when I put it on and it looked perfect, her new name just popped into my head. Her name is no longer her sculpt name :)

    20. I got an Out of Base M02 head *specifically* to be Akemi Homura from Puella Magi Madoka Magica--the plan was to put that head on Azone's Obi50cm Homura, because I was 100% sure I wouldn't like the painted eyes in person.

Then the actual Azone doll showed up, and I fell head over heels for that grumpy face, painted eyes and all. The Out of Base head stayed in a mason jar, and was known for nearly two YEARS as just "Head in a Jar".

I toyed with selling the head, but after thinking about it, I sort of went, "It's MY doll, I can re-faceup or mod her if I want!" I was going to make her Shiro from No Game No Life, but she turned out too perky. While I was sanding her, a friend sent an email mentioning he'd FINALLY watched Young Frankenstein, and that he particularly loved the "Abby Someone" scene.

I looked at the head, looked at the email. . . BAM. Head in a Jar became Abby Normal, a sweet and inquisitive but ever so slightly morbid child.

Granted, that was a complete identity change, but the name was SO right that I just rolled with it. LOL
