Choosing your doll's clothing....

Jul 30, 2010

    1. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I just like to dress My doll in whatever fits her personalities and what would look cute on them.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?

I dont. It's just what ever I think looks cute on them.

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
Yeah, sometimes I lose interest in the clothes if, I find something that is way cuter, but then i'll just use it as her play clothes

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
Well, I choose clothes to my doll's persona. Because clothes show your personality its very important to capture you're dolls personality through clothing, it doesnt matter how cheap or expensive it is, as long as its cute and suits her.

    2. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I usually take in to consideration both price and looks. If it`s something beautiful that I say my dolls can`t be without , I will pay the price, up tp 100 $ per outfit . That`s my rule.
But I would only buy such expensive clothing if it was something special with much detail to it , like a loli dress or steampunk costume.
Otherwise I buy medium-priced clothing from nice brands . Some of my faves are GuessDoll , Dollinstyle , Dollmore and Dollzone.
Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
Well , kind of . I mean , if the doll is more expensive , it deserves the nicest clothes.
But if the doll is less expensive , it also deserves nice clothes to make it look more expensive.
But generally , I must admit , I am inclined on spending more money on my pricier dolls .

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
I allways do this ! Like , Meguri will need lolita clothes , Hajime wears uniforms , etc . I like trying to dress them as accurate to character as possible , even though I haven`t invested much in this lately. It is my 2012 goal to get all my BJDs in-character outfits.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
No , because when I first got my first BJD I didn`t have anymore money to buy him the expensive clothes he wanted . So me and my grandma made him a knitted sweater ( Which is reather nice , I still use that) , a pair of pants ( that were crappy ) and a pair of socks . I don`t think it counts as mistreating him , because 1. the clothes didn`t look horrible , 2. He wasn`t naked , and I could take pictures of him . I also didn`t have to worry about staining. Now he has nicer clothes and a pair of DM shoes.
For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
      Yes !
ex: I own a gypsy costume , and a dreadlock wig that Meguri (Zaoll Muse) Came with when I baught her . When She is wearing those , she doesn`t feel like "my Meguri" . Even though she looks exactly like my OC.
When she is wearing her usual stuff , she does feel like Megu .

-sorry if that was hard to understand!

    3. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?

I'm a little influenced by price in what I buy, but only to what I consider a practical extent - I generally wouldn't spend more on an outfit than I would on a new MSD. Though some of the larger sets I've bought have come pretty close :sweatI'm willing to spend a bit more on clothes if they are really amazingly made, fit the character very well, or if the set includes lots of pieces that are very versatile and can be shared between dolls. I found that once I started sewing for my dolls myself, I became willing to spend a bit more on clothing, knowing the effort that goes into designing, putting together and selecting the materials for an outfit.

I'm especially willing to pay a bit more for nicely tailored suits. Those things are hard to sew, and I like my boys to look like the little gentlemen they are!

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?

Not at all. I don't see why a $165 AoD MSD shouldn't have clothes just as nice as the Volks SD17. Clothing, faceups, wigs, eyes - investing in quality items can make ANY doll look better, not just the pricey ones!

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?

Not at all - clothing them is probably my favourite part of ownership. I love getting various looks for my boys and photographing them.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?

I definitely do this - when I can't find an outfit that is an important part of a doll's character (My D&D character's eccentric suits which fall somewhere between Victorian gentleman and fantasy looks, the specific school uniform that some of my characters wear, etc) I'll try to buy what parts I can find and make the rest myself.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...

If someone else is happy putting their doll in a cut-up sock, so be it. I don't really understand it, but it's their doll, not mine. I know sometimes people are more concerned with getting the doll itself, and clothing comes after the fact. Nothing wrong with that. I usually have outfits/wigs/eyes/shoes waiting for the doll before he arrives, but that's just me. Everyone works differently.

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?

To an extent. The character is pre-defined before I get the doll, so if I stuck him in clothes that were totally random, he'd just seem to be "out of character" or even cosplaying.

    4. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
The limit with underdressing a doll is when a doll has no underwear clothes.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
No, to me price doesn't matter, it matter how good it looks.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
      Yes!

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you?
      Nope

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
      Yes

    5. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I think there is a limit on how much certain dolls wear. I mean it kind of depends on their personality. If one doll likes to dress up and go over the top then do that just don't go do it to show off how much you give your doll or how much money you have.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
No, I don't take the price into consideration. I mean, I got my first doll the other day and I put some of my old barbie Ken clothes on him.

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
No, owning the doll itself is just a miracle saying how expensive some are. I don't think the clothes really matter, just as long as you like what they are wearing.

    6. I honestly completely agree with the friend in OPs post. I certainly wrinkle my nose when I see a otherwise nice doll dressed in shoddy outfits. Personally I'd rather leave my dolls naked in their boxes than in sub-par clothes D:

    7. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I don't see anything wrong with dressing a doll casually as long as the clothes aren't bad quality. I'm not going to dress my doll up in formal wear or some crazy costume all the time.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?

I wouldn't say so. I don't think it should be about how much you spend but how much you get for your money. again, if the clothing is poor quality then there's a problem. but I'm not going to dress my doll up in the most expensive clothing just because it's expensive. furthermore I won't dress him up in something I don't like just because it cost a lot of money.

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
I think it's important that a doll is dressed at least somewhat niceley. again quality, I won't dress my doll in something that'd poorly made and looks awful because of it. or something that doesn't fit the doll's personality. I don't see a point in having a doll just for the sake of having it. dressing it up is hald the fun.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
I like to make sure that the clothes I'm buying go with the dolls character. I wouldn't randomly mix and match either, I would want the outfit to look good. I might expirament a bit with different outfits, but I wouldn't buy something just because I like it. I would buy it based on what the doll would wear. not what I would wear.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
again, I see no point in having a doll if you're not going to play a bit with it's clothes. now if the character would normally dress that way, then sure why not. but I would definately consider it abuse to dress your doll in next to nothing, especially if it's poor quality. I felt bad for leaving my doll shirtless for as long as I did...poor Nohawka...

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
no I wouldn't say so really. I mean. I dress him in clothes that he would wear as a character, not just clothes I like. and there are a lot of clothes he would dress up in as he is quite a fashionable character. I made him partially because the character has a lot of leway with the clothes he wears.

    8. I have not yet begun to dress...haaa ~ there is a famous quote that says "we have not yet begun to fight..."

Starting with my second doll, I began to get this sense that I am a Rehab and Spa for dolls. We have a VERY laid back atmosphere here, welcoming and innocent. Like the GARDEN OF EDEN. Which goes with my name, Daughter of EDEN. I care for them {and in my imagination} they nurture and care for each other. All this to say, right now, we are mostly in the "fig leaf" stage -- or less clothing than even that proverbial fig leaf. The leaf only became necessary when Adam and Eve felt shame about their bodies.

NO SHAME here! I'm looking for the inner glory of my dolls first. When I finally get everything set the way I want it, I hope to design and make very unique outfits and customization for my dolls.

I've found that my mindset completely shifts. Called a paradigm-shift. I buy MY clothes at yard sales and the cheapest thrift stores. I dress like you would expect the stereotype artist I suppose. I find cool things and have my own sense of what style is. The GOODWILL is the expensive store for buying MY clothes.

But when I look at boots, shoes, any of the items for the dolls, my whole head shifts. I will pay prices I would never for myself. My whole purpose those, is to be able to design clothes and handbags and accessories for the dolls. I just have to get an art exhibit hung for a November show and then, if the humidity here allows, I will get going on face-ups. Spray/humidity hold-up.

Clothing production will open here in NOvemBeR!! Character/back-story/clothing/face-ups...in what order? A new thread is born?

I know you have to sift through what I write, if anyone ever does, to find my answers twirling around. But they are here. For me at least, which is fun. I like to wrap my head around these questions AND learn how other people see and feel things.

    9. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I dress them with outfits that fit them.
On certain occasions, they will wear formal or classical attire.
In other times, casual & sweater do the fashion.
There's no such a thing called over or under dressing for me.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
      No. See answer above.

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
I never lose interest in outfits I've planned for them.
I pick, I decide, I buy, I put it on them, and it will be fine, because I want them to be like that.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
Sometimes yes. But things can changed by time.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
Why not...? If it fits my dolls, I don't mind.
Sometimes it's not always the price, it's more about the style & preference things.

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
No, it doesn't. I can always make a certain changes on their characters.

    10. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I do not see overdressing or underdressing at all. If I want to have my doll wear a ballgown covered in rhinestones, then I will. If I want her to be wearing a bedsheet tied with a ribbon, I will. I will not, however, spend a hundred dollars on a dress that isn't for me. I do have my limits when it comes to prices. For meetups, I wouldn't really put my doll in her all-out best outfit/dress if it is just a November-meetup (ie. not a new years party, or something with a theme), she would just look out of place. Also, I wouldn't put her in jeans and a T-shirt at more formalish meetups, she would look out of place once again. Her clothes change with the seasons.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
I try to buy less expensive clothes for my doll. Why pay more if you can either make it or buy it cheaper? I can BARELY sew, so I've only been making teeshirts and sweaters, but I buy all my pants and shorts. Instead of buying 30$ jeans, I bought 13$ jeans. They were still high quality, so it doesn't matter. Why buy a 30$ sweater when I could probably hand-sew one (even if its messier) for cheap?

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
I don't actually know how to answer this. It does mean more that I have the doll- you can't dress up what you don't have. So if I was absolutely and totally utterly broke after buying my doll, and I dressed it in a sock tube dress, I would still be happy that I owned her. I would, however, try to get her nicer clothes in the meantime. But yes, I'd rather own a doll, than own her clothes.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
Sounds good. My doll doesn't have a backstory or character or anything, so I just dress her in everything. I am thinking about going into fashion design, so I'm just making a million mix and match pieces so that I can just have a usual-type wardrobe that I can just pull certain pieces out of and put it on.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
I do not think it is doll negligence if a doll is dressed in a napkin. Not everyone can sew, or afford clothes and commissions. I do like to see effort with that napkin, maybe with a ribbon glued to it or something.

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
      N/A

    11. First of all: I can only answer based on my Pullips, but this is interesting nonetheless!

What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I focus mostly on the look of the outfit. I'd rather buy a few select quality outfits that really fit my doll's personality. Although I sometimes do splurge on a random lot...

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?

      No!

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
Nope, not at all. Owning the doll is where the fun begins. I like to dress my girls and use them for photo shoots. I may not "play" with them every day, but I like looking at them.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
I like to mix and match, although I've bought a few outfits in full because it's a nice set. Whatever my girls want!

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
Well, what you use your doll for is really your own problem. I've adopted out a doll recently to a friend, and I know she won't be able to afford lots of expensive clothes, and her taste is different from mine. I still know that she loves the doll more than I ever could. :aheartbea

    12. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
It depends. I dress her according to the occasion so I don't really worry about overdressing/under dressing her. If we're going to a casual meet with my close friends, I prefer dressing her up in casual clothes. If we have a doll shoot/some more formal event, she wears some of her "special" clothes.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
Nope, though I don't buy expensive pieces. One of the reasons why I wanted a doll is because I want to exercise my creativity by making her clothes myself. I don't limit myself when buying materials/fabrics though. XD

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
I want my doll to always look at her best. Having a doll and making him/her look good go hand in hand IMO. It reflects how much your doll means to you if you exert your effort in making your doll look at its best.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
I dress her based on her personality. My doll's a bit on the demure side so I keep her looking decent and avoid showing too much skin. XD But I don't think she'll mind wearing a few sexy pieces once in a while.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
Not really. To each his own. Though if you keep your doll wearing makeshift clothes forever, it'll make me think that you just bought the doll just for the heck of it.

      :truffle:truffle:truffle

    13. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I tend to treat my dolls like real people, which means... a day out or night out will have them dressed their best, while staying in... will have them in casual clothes. I don't like to have them 'underdressed'... or just standing around nude or in just their undies. (Although the shock on the face of non-bjd owners occassionally makes this worthwhile.;))

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
All my bjds are treated the same. I simply get what I think suits their characters the best. I don't really care what is the doll's original value. The spending limit of their clothes depends solely on my bank account and when my salary comes in :sweat

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
A definite yes. Afterall, the doll's character determines his/her likes... and no one likes wearing things they feel uncomfortable or dislike.

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you?
It depends on the appearance of the doll. If the bjd looks presentable or the clothes are meant to suit its given character... it cannot be mistaken as negligence. If the doll's character is, for example, that of an aimless rover, then dressing it in suits... would provide an inaccurate representation of its character. However, I draw the line at certain 'makeshift'... outfits... such as those made of duct tape and/or various other... 'creative' materials. Clothes should be made of cloth.

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
Yes. My bjd... has the character of a somewhat grumpy, slightly bossy girl... and depending on what she wears... she can appear relaxed... bad-tempered or happy.

    14. I do not own a dollfie yet ;A; But I'm saving up to make a custom one so I'll answer these ^-^

What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I don't think there is a limit - I guess it all comes down to your taste in fashion. Just because they cost a BOMB doesn't mean they need be dressed super super prettyfully (i know it's not a real word) but if you want to do that it's fine too. You should take into consideration your dolls personanilty.

Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
No ... I would make my own clothes ^-^ as well as buy them. If you have the money then your can buy them for your doll - I guess it all depends on your opinion.

Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
Yes ^-^ Owning a doll to me would mean more to me then the way it's dressed but I'd want her to have decent clothing as well. The fact that I would own a Dollfie would bring joy to my life.

Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
Yes - That is what i plan to do. My Dollfie to be loves Panda's and Owls so I would having clothing based on that. It's fun to give your dolls clothes that match their character or back story :)

Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
No...If it's cheap then it's okay if it looks good. If it's obviously bad and still cheap it's probably a bad idea to buy it. Would you buy super cheap clothing even if it was bad just for the price? I don't think so.

For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
I guess it does slightly ^-^ But whatever it's dressed in it's always gonna be the same character that you'll love X3

    15. I am more on realistic modern dress for my doll as personal preference. The doll value doesn't come into consideration. I just have a personal peeve which I personally do not like my dolls to have and that is putting lace to my doll clothes to make it pretty or adding glitters (sequins) to make it look expensive or adding ribbons and flowers to make it look girlish.
I will dress my doll the way I want not the way the lookers want. I know and understand dolls are meant to be viewed but I bought mine for the sole purpose of enjoying it. So the viewers view are not important to me. If they like it it's well and good but if not oh well... I wasn't born to please everybody cause I know I pleased myself putting that dress to my doll and that is why I bought the clothes and dolls in the first place.

    16. For me it's totally based on their character and backstory. Jaida is my pin up girl, she gets to dress up and have fun, she has a lot of clothes and they're pretty nice. Joel is recent to me but he already has a couple girl clothes and couple boys clothes since he crossdresses and they're nice too. But he definitely had a pair of pants and regular t-shirt. Andy doesn't do dress up and she's a runaway, so she has a simple outfit and right now that's the only one she has. So it's a character thing.

    17. I don't think the limit of over or underdressing are determendet by how many different articles of clothes the doll wears, but rather what kind of clothes.
Many people in our Swedish comunity (for example) make the clothes themselves from old socks or something that looks really crappy. I understarnd that not everyone can sew, but I do agree with your friend in this case: "But God, they are like $500 a piece! How can one shove a makeshift shirt & pants on a $500 doll?" You really only need one outfit that looks nice, that's all.

I don't take in consideration the doll costs to determine what clothes he/she will wear. As long as the clothes look nice, I dont care if they're home made, made by a company or made by someone on Etsy, for example.

I would never get a doll just to own the doll and don't care about clothes. The clothes is a big part of the personality! I dress my doll based on her back story, yes.
Its fun to make clothes and make the doll look pretty. I mean, I wouldn't but a doll without a face up and just leave it without a face forever, thats just.. Weird.

I wouldn't say that makeshift clothes is neglecting your doll, however I myself find it weird that you buy this beautiful doll and dress it in old rags or an old sock. If you coult afford the doll, you should be able to afford some decent clothes that look nice (they dont have to be expensive, just look nice).

    18. What is the limit between overdressing and underdressing a doll, for you?
I think many clothes are really taking it a step too far. Like most fullsets clothing. Especially with those glass stones and extra ribbons and stuff. But that may also be because I just don't like the style. It just feels overloaded. They often look cool in sales pictures, though.
      On the other hand I like medieval and fantasy clothing, which can get quite layered sometimes. ^^;
As for underdressing, I guess it's mostly the fabric. When a girl's nipples poke through (when clearly they shouldn't), I don't think there's much work put into.
I make most of the clothes myself, but when I would buy something I would definitly look out more for the style than I would for the price.
Regarding the first question, do you also take into consideration the doll's value, when buying it clothes?
      No.
Does owning the doll itself as a possession mean more to you than the way it's dressed?
Besides other things I want to use clothes to bring the doll's character across. So clothes also mean a lot, though of course not as much as the doll itself.
Planning a doll's outfit based on its given back story/character...?
Yay ^^ And since I mostly sew myself that only leaves room for shoes. And I'm trying to find the right ones everywhere.
Does makeshift/sale clothes/generally dressing a doll in very cheap clothes count as doll mistreating/negligence to you? Or as owner-side-only gratification with the possession of the doll itself...
Well, it seems a little odd that someone would pay at least 100$ for a doll and then just takes a worn-out sock and cuts holes in it for the doll to wear. But there's nothing to say against cheap clothes. They can also look quite good.
For persons who also have a particular OC/character assigned to a doll, does the way it is dressed influence your perception of your doll/OC?
I'd feel strange if the dolls would just have a piece of fabric around them, when I'm not working on them. Either they're waiting naked and I work on them or they wear clothes.

    19. Personally I prefer the 'casual' look for most of my dolls (obviously that would just be weird for Roke, a dragon, and for Frankenstein). I only wish it were easier to find decent jeans and T-shirts or cute tops! I don't want weird cosplay things and I'm not interested in overly fancy getups.

    20. I dress my dolls like humans, they use clothes like the ones I use, would use if I was a boy or if I had the perfect body they have. But I understand the question, I wouldn't have my girl wear black leggings and a black t-shirt every single day just because she's staying home, even if I'm dressed like that at home. But sometimes she wears them and we enjoy being dressed like twins. I don't think a doll can be over- or underdressed, why buy clothes the owner doesn't like?

Yes, a doll is expensive, but I use as much money to pay my rent every month as I used to buy a doll. Being a human is so much more expensive, why should an expensive doll have more expensive clothes than I do? More fancy, maybe, because they look nicer on them AND are cheaper than as nice clothes in human size would be.

Just now my boy is wearing a black-and-white shirt and black trousers, nice everyday clothes that make him look like a real boy. He does have leather trousers etc, but he's sitting at home now, not playing his guitar anywhere else. I dress them like they were my own (teenage) children, and the value of the doll is not just the looks and the money I've spent, it's the soul I gave him.
