Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jun 27, 2011

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
It took a long time! I started looking at dolls a couple of years before finding my boy, but all I knew was "Dollfie" and "Volks," so that was the only place I was looking. The prices really threw me, and there weren't any I liked nearly enough to get one, especially since I knew what I wanted my doll to look like (I never planned to have more than one). I later got a copy of Haute Doll, with a very pretty boy advertised in it (I forget who, now), but again he both wasn't quite what I wanted, and was well out of my price range. Eventually my roommate at the time, who knew the character I wanted, happened across a match while shopping for her own doll, and that's what did it.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The first time I saw him! And it didn't matter to me that "he" was actually a "she," I still knew he was the perfect fit for what I'd been wanting all along!
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Occasionally I wish I'd found one with a little better body construction, but at the same time, the work I've put in getting his balance and jointing together, while not necessarily ideal for a "first time" doll, has been a good experience, and I don't regret it. His face mold is still absolutely perfect for his character!
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?Bobobie Sprite, swapped to a male body, and yes, I do still have him. :)
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I did purchase him myself, and while he was shown to me by my roommate, I was the one who made the final decision (I looked around at some of the others on JunkySpot's site before committing to him).

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Several weeks ago i logged in into DA and i found a beautiful pic of a migidoll ryu..it was love at first sight! That type of doll fit perfectly with the character i have in mind and so i decided that my 1st doll had to be that one..
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
It was love at first sight! XD so the first time i saw him! XD
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
i'm sure i will not get unhappy with my choice! *^*
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
i don't have any doll yet! ^-^ but i'm sure that i will not sell him!
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
it will be half and half.. 1/2 my doing and 1/2 a present for my birthday!

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I started looking around different companies and fell in love with Fairyland, Minifee was the perfect size for me. I looked at a lot of videos and picture before I decided non the sculpt

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I saw some lovely videos and images of Chloe I knew that she had to be the one

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No I still love her to bits, to me she is very beautiful. Just wish I had got a sleeping head with her

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My minifee Chloe still has pride of place, sitting on her bed in my room

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I made all the choices for my doll as I brought her for myself, the next one is a gift but I still get to pick

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well at first I wanted a Male but I wasn't particularly fond of the idea of getting a large doll but I really didn't like how androgynous and childlike all the male dolls looked in the smaller heights. So I opted to find a female doll in a smaller size more to my liking. I actually balanced a few things, looks, cost, items, travel time etc. etc. before I decided on my doll. I fell in love with her face and her price and all the things I got for her price.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When she met all my criteria and I couldn't stop going back to her web page.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I am not unhappy with my choice but I feel a bit uneasy with how soon after I got her before I was looking at other dolls models for a possible second since I know I won't be getting another one for a rather long time.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Doll-Love May and yes I do still own her cause I got her recently xD

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I didn't my first BJD I bought second hand at Anime North. I Knew I whas going to buy a doll if I had the money and thare whas a lady thare with a boy body and 2 heads. I asked how mutch I had egnuf and I chode my head. I didn't even know what sculpt he whas untill I joing DOA and you lovely ones helped me althogh I apparently made a good choice becue he is an old body type but he has dubbel joints. His heads a Claud by Luts BTW, sompthing I whould have never considerd anny other way and I love him SOOO much!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I had seem BJD's befor thanks to Devient art and I whas intorested but when I saw them in person at Anime north the year befor I started giving it some real thought. When I arrived that year I whas staying for 3 days and I knew if I had the money it whas going to happen, I whas ready!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

No I love my sassy boy (His name's Alice how sassyer can you get?) What I wish is that i'd haggeld with the seller more, no face up head body eyes and wig all used cost me $500 I think maby $400 whould have been better considering his yellowing but I don't regret HIM.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Used Claud on old style Farie Land male SD body. Yes he's not going anywhere

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

I whasn't really able to choose more then between 2 heads but I don't mind. He was a priesent to me, yay birthday money!

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I've been looking at different dolls for most of this year to find the perfect one to be my character. I had a few possibles, but it wasn't until I found him that I knew he was the one. I can't say how I knew exactly, I just did, almost as though he was already my character and I just needed to bring him home.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Immediately. I saw him and thought, it's him, I've found him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I can't imagine that I will ever feel that way, but as he's still on his way, I can't really answer this. I'll be very shocked if I don't bond with him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Cynical Yujin from Migidoll, and he is the first and only doll I intend to own.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I've saved up for a very long time and he was entirely my own choice, yes.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I have a doll that I love to bits, but he's huge. I decided that he'd be a reward for myself when I graduate from university, but I figured that I'd need another doll FIRST just to make sure that he'd be worth it. I decided on my DZ Megi, because he looks almost exactly like my grail doll, only much smaller, and with open eyes.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew that he should be my first because he's small enough that he wouldn't take up a whole lot of room, and also because while skimming through all the DZ MSDs, he's the only one I kept going back to.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No. I love him to bits, and I'm glad I have him.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Funny story, actually. ^.^' See, I ordered my first doll at the end of April 2012. Less than a month later (the May long weekend), I was at an anime convention and I went to the BJD panel. A lady there had a 63cm hybrid doll for sale for $400. I bought him, and had him in my room the next night. I don't know which one would count as my first, but I do still have them both. :3

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked around at lots and lots of different dolls, but it wasn't 'til I saw her that I knew I had to have one.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I had figured out a way to fit her into my budget, really.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
There was a moment when I was about to order her that I hesitated. There was another sculpt from the same company that I liked nearly as much and I was a little worried if I had made the right choice. But it turned out that not only did I make the right choice, I also was lucky enough to buy e second hand head of the other sculpt at a very reasonable price. Ande the girl who sold her to me acctually turned out to live in the same city as me! And this is not a big place. So, small world. Ad that in turn led to a local doll meet and I met a few other local doll people that I probably never would have met otherwise.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first was a Lati blue Shaina. I still have her and she is still my favourite.

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
      Love at first sight. ^^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I'd been considering a lot of other dolls, but when I first saw her, that was it. It was an instantaneous decision.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope, I still adore her and find her perfect in every way. I have since added to my collection, but none could take her place!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
The girl I decided on was the old-style (2005 version) Dollstown Triste, and I still have her! By some circumstances (difficulty in finding the sculpt, other pre-orders opening up), I ended up with a DollShe Bermann as my actual first doll, however. Had things gone to plan she would've most definitely been my first though!

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
At first, I didn't think I would seriously get a doll. I toyed with the idea, and even saved a little money, but I wasn't real serious. Then I saw the Dollshe Hound, and that was it! I scrimped and saved and scraped together the funds until I could bring him home. I saw him and just knew he was the right one. I guess you could say it was love at first sight!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The moment I saw him! He just clicked for me. Now I look for that "click" when I buy any other doll.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all! Doubt I ever will. I got him in '05, and he's still my favorite.:aheartbea

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Dollshe Hound, and yes, he's still with me!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
He was 100% my choice. He wasn't exactly a present, but my sister was very helpful in getting him for me.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
My grail, with everything together (doll, faceup, wig, clothes, shoes -- just the bare basics), is going to run me close to $800. So I decided to take my first foray into the BJD hobby with a doll that was half that price, which seemed a lot less risky.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I saw that she was available, but for a limited ordering period.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No way. I truly believe she was the perfect choice for my first BJD.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Iplehouse Pixxie Joyful Blooming. Still waiting on her to arrive, actually.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, I chose it; no, it wasn't a present. I paid with my own money.

    12. Deciding was the easy part, once I had settled on a Volks Chii I had to save-up AND try to find one which took roughly a year.

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I'd been looking at bjd's for a while and i had a budget of about $200.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew she was the one at first site, I'd liked the company, and she came with a few extras.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all, once I bought her I never looked back, and I still adore her to this day.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Doll Chateau Hilary, and I still own her.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose her and bought her with my own money. She was not a present.

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I made first the character, backstory and how he would look then I searched for a sculp that could suit him <3 it wasn't easy but I succeeded haha

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

      Because I only had this one OC, therefore I was so excited about it that the doll HAD to fit my OC, it was a must ;w;

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

      Nope, I don't regret a single thing, I love him a lot <3

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Leekeworld Edgar and yes I do, I could never let go that doll.

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

Yes I was and no, I bought him myself :)

    15. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I discovered Soom while searching for centaur BJDs. I fell in love with Beryl and Sard, but they'd sold out. So I kept watching Soom's site, waiting for something similar to be sold. I passed on Amber (which I ended up regretting), but as soon as I saw Cuprit I knew I had to get her.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Immediately. I knew as soon as I saw the preview photo (before I even saw that she had hooves).

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope! She's still one of my favourite dolls (although I did eventually snag both an NS Beryl/Sard pair and an original CW Amber).

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Soom's Monthly Doll Cuprit (Black Frost)

She just seemed to call to me lol.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not unhappy with her only with her wig and shoes at times.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? /
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I had been interested in BJDs for a while, maybe since about '05 or '06, and it was just earlier this year, the minute I saw MissMonster's modified Resinsoul Ming, that the day had come and he was the one perfect for me!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Oh no, I think unless tragedy happens I probably won't be separated with this one <:
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      Resinsoul Ming
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yep! And It was a present to myself!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She isn't here yet but I plan for my first doll to be a Resin Soul Mei.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Nope, at first my parents wouldn't let me until I held down a job, but I eventually persuaded them to let me save for her with my monthly allowance.

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I spent days searching through all the big brands, looking for "the one". I knew I would be certain when I had found her, and that day came when I stumbled on to the Bluefairy website.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I began my search, I knew I was looking for a "natural" aesthetic, and Bluefairy fit the bill perfectly (though I have since become deeply interested in Little Gem, which is anything but!). As soon as I saw Tiny Fairy Olive, I knew I had found what I was looking for. As a scholar of British History and a professed Anglophile, Olive's British/Irish features completely captivated me, and I knew I had found my first doll.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope, I am still completely enamoured with her. I think she's even more beautiful now than she was on the website!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Molly is my first and only doll, though perhaps she will have a little sibling in the distant future!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, the choice was made entirely by me. In fact, I hid my decision from my family until the day she arrived because I did not want them to know how much I spent and attempt to dissuade me from getting her. However, even my mother had to admit she was quite beautiful, despite being appalled at the price of the average BJD and threatening to stop paying my tuition since I "clearly have a ton of extra money to spend"
