Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. If a doll had qualities of my dolls eg hair or clothes frankly i wouldnt care, there isnt a rule that says only one person/doll in the whole wide world can have that because theres only so many styles and looks. An just because you like it doesnt give you right to be the only person to have it. Now if the whole make up hair eyes and clothes had been copied thats something else all together, an something i dont agree with

    2. I'll admit it I would most definitely be upset if someone was directly copying one of my dolls. I don't know how unique any of mine are per se, but I think if it was a copy I'd know it. I don't know if I'd say anything about it but I would be quite annoyed.

This is something I worry about though. When I was waiting on Donovan I saw Jenova's Yder and messaged her on dA because I was afraid she'd think I copied her, all based on one of the pictures in her gallery. Now not quite half a year later I'm worried it'll look like I'm copying her again because I'm getting a Sram that may or may not be paired with one of my Elf Yders. Thankfully she knows I'm not copying her but it still worries me that other people might think that.

    3. I don't really have to worry about that. I like really unpopular headmolds. Also, there's the fact, that I am modeling the doll after a character. So if someone thinks I am copying them I can sent them a picture of the character and show them why she looks like that.
If someone copied my idea, um, I like to say I would flattered. But I am not that good of a person. I would most likely be pissed and complaining to all my non-online friends. But I most likely would say anything to the person who copied my doll.

    4. I really agree with this, i guess its what i was trying to say.
Also to comment on the "nothings new etc.." I never fail to be amazed at the originality of the members on this board, i see faceups, mods etc that i would never have thought of. Not only are we all individuals with our own ideas and dreams but we are also from different cultures and our lives and personalities have been formed from different influences. To say there is nothing new is like saying there's no point in buying a new book because its all been written before. Ideas and imagination are infinite, people evolve and change as they get older and have different experiences in their lives, inventors come up with new things all the time. I know a lot of people will say they have no imagination but it isn't true, you just have to find something to stimulate it :)

    5. We all may be unique as people. However, we can all be put into categories with people we've never met, simply because we happen to like the same thing as them. With the same trends sweeping across the world, they will be at least one or more accidental copy cat. As far as the copy cat on purpose, they say flattery is the best complaint. But i can see where you'd find it creepy. However, you can't confront them about it. they just might claim accident, and to argue over such matter as, "she/he copied my doll" seems a bit childish. So i guess theres nothing you can do about it.

    6.
    7. I would love to have a doll that looks like Nova(pantygirl (ithink) owns him) but i'd never go out of my way to copy him >< i do want a blonde el with green eyes and a body blushing, but i've seen tons of other el's similar to that description and they look nothing like nova, so i'm pretty content with what i want. Since no matter what i do, it would be impossible to copy compleatly inless i started asking her when/where she got the eyes/wig ect. And i wouldn't do that XD

I woulnd't be bothered on bit if someone copyed Naomi... kris is easy to copy he's only a head XD
      but..really... i dont' care >,>;

    8. IF someone made their own like..macabee-lyke doll I don't think i'd care...unless theirs looked exactly like my boy...If i saw a dolly out there that had a little inspiration from my boy I thin i'd be flattered XD

    9. I'm planning on getting a DOC U this friday, well ordering him anyway, he's just got the sweetest smile and his face captured me and suddenly his whole story starts fluttering to my mind. Sadly his style, when I get it all worked out is similar to something I've seen here on someone's doll. I'm very nervous that they might think I've copied their doll when it really isn't my intention. Don't get me wrong I LOVED their little one but...well he might have been a slight inspiration but when my character popped into my mind so did HIS OWN style...I don't want to be accused of copying...he just happens to be a colorful boy tooo...i'm rather depressed about it..

    10. I wish there were more Elfdoll Wu on DoA. XD

Markus Cristoff Lancaster or Wu (Elfdoll Wu, because, hey, he looks like a Wu) was bought because I was inspired by Angelmecha's Tristan Young. I even asked her if it is okay if I could copy Tristan's wig. I adore her Elfdoll Wu so much. But when I finally got mine I was surprised by how much Wu's looks have solidified into something entirely different.

His most distinctive feature is one light blue eye and one dark blue eye. After about three months browsing DoA I came across a doll that not only had those eyes but had black hair and tattoos. I actually thought, "Hey, when did I get Wu and how did I post photos of him when I don't even have a camera? Of any type?" I honestly thought I was seeing a post from the future! *laughs* Far future. Because now after these so many months I still don't have a camera but I have Wu. I wasn't at all bothered, I thought I would be. I was just intrigued by the doll.

But at a second look I saw that he was not an Elfdoll Wu, the tattoos are not the same and their backstories are no where near similar. The other doll is lovingly angst-filled, immortally sulky, half demon/angel hybrid once-upon-a-time-sex-slave turned demon hunter and is heavily into the occult/gothic subculture. He has so many piercings he could double as a lightning rod and is quite the talented beauty; he's a part time model and musician.

Wu on the other hand is completely human, dresses in suits and ties or classic, tailored garments and is legally blind in the lighter colored eye. He has perfect pitch but he can't sing or play an instrument to save his other eye. He's a cheerfully celibate hermit who's known for staying in his house for months on end and is the author/illustrator for a series of graphic novels for young adults and children.

His tattoos are the only type on bjd's...because I copied them from my father's tattoos. They are Theravadan Buddhist prayers, hymns and wards written, not in sanskrit, but in my native language's distinctive alphabet encircling both of his biceps. I've built in literary quips and other identifiers into the phrases used. Even if it is 'inspired' if I see those identifiers, yeah, copies. Because Cambodian is a very hard font type to get a hold of I simply write how they sound in English every time I talk about them.

And someone copied this. They didn't put it on a bjd but they did put it on their original Japanese visual Kei rocker character in fanfics they wrote about Dir en Gray. They said it was written in kanji. I distinctly remembered the person asking me what it meant several months before this character started sporting them on their shoulder blades. I said, as a joke, "to Open the Gates of Darkness and let Loose the Ill Will of of the Human Spirit!"

I don't think they know that I am a lurking member of many groups about Japanese music, especially the art and fanfic sites. I snickered in derision but I didn't get miffed or aggravated. I can't help but laugh every time I see/read one of their fics about this character. The phrases are actually simple blessings for good health, happiness and prosperity.

The only possible reason why they would copy is simply to look "kewl" and "unique". Hello irony, is that you? They even claim that they made it up themselves. It's such a complete opposite to the character's incredibly melodramatic love-life and emo-angsting attitude.

    11. When I named my Chiwoo Ferdinand I searched the gallery for hits on that name out of curiosity to see who he'd be sharing names with, and didn't get any returns. Now I believe there are some other Ferdinand dolls out there, but I'm not going to assume my doll was the reason for it. (If anything, I'm assuming Franz Ferdinand had a sudden recent upswing in popularity.)

About the only one of my dolls I could even get vaguely suspicious about copying with is if someone produced a doll with a flower-themed name with a corset piercing and a similar tattoo scheme, otherwise my dolls are common enough that my first thought would be coincidence.

    12. I only have one business suit for my El, and with black hair he might look 'too similar' to the one advertised on LUTS's website. Regardless of which boy doll I choose, I meant for him to have black hair and dark blue eyes even before I saw that picture, so I figured that I'm not going to give up my hair/eye combination for this coincidence. But in a way, I'm not too paranoid about it because my El never photographs looking marginally cool as the smirking beauties on the website and his face-up structure/color scheme is so different from LUTS's model Els that it's like different people wearing the same suit anyway. XD I think that's a trademark that speaks for itself. So for now, I think I'm relatively safe.

    13. I don't think it would bother me too much. I could class their doll as a relation to mine, like a long lost twin almost. I would probably take it as flattery more than an offence, unless they accused me of copying them.

I don't see it being likely that someone would copy my doll as she has a now rare luts face-up and I make all her clothes for her.

    14. Lols!
I'm actually helping someone copy one of my dolls... to the point of having sold this particular doll's outfit and wig to the "copyist". And then she wants me to do the faceup too!!

Also my avatar girl is a copy (or rather a big nod to) of a certain Viennese Welsh Queen's doll (Boudicca anyone? XD). I didn't have the skills to really copy her, but I loved this doll's face so much I had to have something similar.

      So that's me guilty!!! D-:

    15. Well, it would bother me if someone intentionally copied my doll time after time. Not that it could happen acctuallyXD

    16. As far as names go, I think unless it's really something you made up mixing strange words and letters or sth weird, many names are very common, specially in a large community like this.
My doll has a very common name. I've choosen it because first, me being Portuguese, I wanted my doll to have a portuguese name. Gabriel is my favorite male portuguese name, but like many other names, it exists in different languages. So I guess it's normal that there are other dolls here with that first name. His surname is also Portuguese, so I dount there's a doll with exactly the same name. And if there was, pretty sure it was a coincidence, since the name has nothing special itself.

There is nothing special or uncommon about my doll. I've decided that I wanted an EL BW some years ago, and I also decided then he'd have the set of eyes he has today :) The wig came later, and perhaps that's the only "customized" thing about him, I've styled it myself. The makeup I just had to learn and practise on my own, and currently he's wearing the same makeup style I wear, but I feel that there's much to be done on customizing my doll (after all... it's not even been half a year since I have him).

But one day I've found a picture on-line of a doll with a blatant copy of a very famous doll makeup. The website was outside DoA, and it had several doll pictures. But that makeup... you could imediatelly tell it had been copied from that doll (not mentioning names). It was a very original and creative makeup, so I don't really "get it" why would someone try to copy something like that :o
The dollowner who had created that makeup had removed and repainted the doll several times, and every each of them was very creative. So I think that even if the doll in question wasn't wearing that makeup anymore, it still doesn't justify such a.... "rip off".

I think it was quite disrespectful to the original creator of that makeup style. It was something special, that belonged to a "character".
But in the end, dollowners have the final word on what they want/do not want for their dolls.

    17. No one has actually ever even tried to copy my dolls' style/looks etc., but it would probably bother me if someone would intentionally do that. I want my dolls to be unique. Not that they could really be entirely unique - of course there's always a doll with same kind of hair, clothes, face up etc.. But I wouldn't be happy to see a doll just like my own.
I don't even understand why people copy each other's dolls - can you really feel like it's your doll if it's a straight copy of other?

    18. My opinion on this is I wouldn't like a copier who copied something and took it from my idea and then claimed it to be theirs but otherwise I wouldn't mind if someone took my idea of something and said that their whatever was inspired by mine or something? I dunno..I also feel..about the whole same wig/eyes/clothes/etc. that if you were friends or if you really admired a doll it'd be kind of cute to have your doll cosplay as that person's doll or something...as long as you said that you were (though..when you're cosplaying you usually say who you're cosplaying as lol)...Also, I personally like little coincidences like having the same hat or pants or something. It sort of means you might have the same taste in something and thus, might be able to be friends because you have something in common.

As for the same name thing I think it's sort of the same as what I was starting to say above about having something in common. I mean, I think it would be fun to have just a few dolls that have the same name meet up...because in real life..at least in my experience finding someone with the same name as youself is sort of a fun thing. Like if you meet on coincidence it's sort of like a special thing that had happened. So if I found another Kaji on the boards or whatever I think it'd be kind of cool to have them meet. I dunno maybe I'm weird.

    19. If someone had the same things as me, I wouldn't really think about it.
To get inspired is also fine.

But if somebody tried to make their doll the exact same as my dolls, I think it would bother me. I guess I'd feel a little .. used or so.

    20. The only way I'd be upset about copying is if someone took one my original clothing designs & copied that, otherwise I'm fine about it. In fact, a friend & I have almost identical tastes in dolls & clothes. We've both purchased the same clothing without even knowing about it & a number of our dolls are the same too. We even enable each other by telling where we got the things. It's a lot of fun actually to see the little differences some accessories or wig can make. I wouldn't expect someone to change their style just because it's nearly the same as mine.
