Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. Well, if someone went as far to have the same doll with the name and hair/eyes, that'd be weird. I'd probably be like, "Whut is going on?? D:" Honestly, I'd be pretty weirded out if someone had the same doll with the same name as me, at least for Chyou... I've never seen his name before, but it is a real name so it's definitely possible.

I'd be miffed at first, and as long as the copier didn't claim that the backstory of the character was the same and that they made it up or something, then I'd be fine after a while? XD

    2. i.. dont know xD i mean as far as beau is concerned, i love how he looks but i know he isnt the most original fellow out there. Blonde hair, default faceup. So if i were to see another hound that looked like him i wouldnt get bent out of shape you know?
As for hamish though... well if i saw somone who had (intentionally) copied his looks id deffinatly feel ruffled. Since he has a custom faceup that i asked for and drew specifically for him, and i also cut and styled his wig myself so... i guess id be kinda miffed if he were copied , but neverthless he IS an el and there are tons out there, im sure that some cant help but look alike, right?

    3. Copying does bother me.

If somebody's doll wears the same store-made clothing, no big deal, most of us shop at the same stores. If somebody's doll has the same name as one of mine like a Lex or a Nathan or even a Magnus, no big deal those are fairly common names. I haven't run across too many dolls that seem like mine, however:

I'm currently struggling over a conceptual copy issue that only seems a copy because it's the same concept using the same head with the same sort of coloring. It varies from mine in some ways, but it still doesn't sit well with me. It's also a doll that belongs to someone who has met my doll before at a meet...I don't know... I know there are other issues involved but it's such a coincidence. *sigh*

Perhaps I'll have a chance to talk to them about it some day. I'm not mad or anything but I'd feel better if I knew how they arrived at the same conclusions that I did.

    4. My boy's names are Yuki and Ichi, and those are pretty common. ^^; But they're the names of characters in my story (thier real names are longer, so I don't use them really. Only when they're bad, Lol.) so I'm not copying anyone. I'm pretty sure I've seen dolls with the same names, but it's just a cowinceidence. (that's spelled wrong I'm sure, sorry!)

I have a H. Ivan (which I havn't seen any others on the board? I think only pics from a meetup...) and a Too. *nods*

I have an El boy coming soon, and I know that El is really popular. XD But he's really cool, and is probably going to replace my H. Ivan, because Ivan's mold is just a bit too cute/short for Ichi. If not, I'm probably going to think up a really super abnormal name, lol.
My El also has a default faceup, a blonde wig and green eyes (for now). That's what I wanted for him, and it wasn't modeled after anyone else. Though it will probably change after I have him for a while, or when I can actually get him his body. XD

I sew a little (but I'm not as good as people here. @_@) and I guess I'd be angry if I saw someone copy my design for my clothes. XD I made them, so please don't take them. But I don't have a copyright or anything, so I guess I couldn't do anything but sulk and get over it. lol

But if they copied my dolls looks EXACTUALLY, I'd be a bit mad. D= Yuki is in H. Ivan's default outfit, little black shoes, black cat ears, a brown wig and green eyes.

Ichi isn't himself yet, but hopefully he'll have a moehawk wig (I'll be sewing wefts and styling, lol) smaller blue eyes, and some heavy dark makeup. Probably with jeans and his plaid sweatshirt (that was made by the AMAZING Becca <3) and has his lock necklace.

I havn't seen another boy like that, so I hope I'm safe!

    5. I've seen Shiwoo all over the place. There are some molds that are very popular. My doll will be here today and he's a Latidoll K. I haven't seen that many K owners, though. I only know three or so and I don't see them all over the Galleries or anything, so I'm not worried about it. I wouldn't mind it if they look similar, but I think it might bother me if I design a new outfit, work hard to make it myself, and then someone just copies it. Of course, it's a good thing no one would want to copy my unskilled work.

    6. yeah, I would be a tad bit aggravated.

    7. I have a Luts Ttori and I think so do a ton of other people. He's got a default make up too, so the only difference is that he's got golden yellow eyes with hardly any white showing. I doubt anyone will copy that, but if they do, I don't care. Oh and I named him Benji after my my mom's friend's 2 year old ubber cute grandson cause he looks so like him. On with the clones! LOL

    8. I would be more upset at their story being copied. But, I tend to keep the details of their stories to myself. My Chiwoo is rather simple; he's a default Chiwoo with a black hair face-up, short black hair, and grey eyes. Henry only special to me, and would be lost in a crowd of Chiwoos. Harold won't be much different other than he's a limited doll, but that doesn't matter to me. James is a silver-haired Lahoo, so, no surprise.

When I first out that someone else had a Chiwoo named Henry, I was a little urked. Then I found out he was a zombie, and I got to know the owner. Now I love zombie-Henry. ^^

    9. Hmm...I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel for a second like "Aw, my doll(s) not as unique, there's someone else like them. ):" After that initial feeling I then would probably feel like "Oh no, I hope they don't think I copied them! D: My guys are different, promise!" I've yet to see any doll on here that looks like mine or vise-versa though, even though they wear pretty common clothes and wigs. If I did, I don't think I would really care after those initial feelings because, well, my dolls are wearing pretty common clothes and wigs. XP I could care less about names; the ones I picked aren't that uncommon either.

If someone copied my story, down to the characters and names and everything and then passed it off as their ideas, then I'd be upset of course. ^^; Not that any story is completely original anymore, but every story someone makes up has that "special feeling" to it, you know what I mean?

If someone also had a Pit doll though, I'd be all like "Sweet, another Kid Icarus fan! :D"

    10. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery, folks. :)

I won't really repeat what everyone else has said about being involved in a hobby where we have limited resources.

    11. As my tastes are very simple, it would be in poor taste for me to get bent out of shape every time I saw something similar.

And since I'm a newbie... I'd be the offending one anyway!

    12. Absolutely, which is why I never reveal any specific plans about anything until customizations are done. I don't even reveal names until the doll is complete.

Then, at least if there is a copy, I know mine was the first.

Speaking of names, I also think purposeful name-copying is just as bad.

    13. In most cases, we're relatively limited in terms of what we can do, unless we do a lot of sewing or want to have VERY unusual-looking dolls. ^^;; Especially with El, he fits into certain appearances very well, like the all-white or gothic looks.

That said, I'd be very annoyed if my designs were copied, because of unusual markings, colours, appendages... At the same time, I'm not living in a bubble of uniqueness. ~_^ So I guess it depends on the situation, right?

    14. If it were *obviously* done it would irritate me a tad, but I have to agree with whoever said that it would bother them more if the doll's personality/story were copied. Default faces and hair aside, coincidence is a pretty easy thing to come across in such a small market niche.
All I know for sure is that the F26 head isn't the most common one out there, so I'm really not that worried about someone copying 'Nix's look.... *shrug*

    15. It would probably bother me quite a bit, but they would have to do a lot of copying, really. Tadzio (my first) will be a Ttori, and I know that there are a goodnumber of ttori owners out thre, and really, his character design is pretty normal (all my characters are pretty much normal people). But if they went as far as copying his name, his personality, his history and (yes) this one particular outfit that I have yet to make but never seen anywehere else, then I'd be very miffed.

    16. I totally disagree that you can't really have an original doll because of common wigs, clothes, ect.. Sure, if you leave your doll default, there will be a lot of similar dolls out there. If you really want an original doll, and put a lot of thought and work into it, you *can* do it. Some people don't care that much about being different, or don't want to put that much effort into it. Some do; like me.

That said, I sew my dolls clothes, and have created a fairly unique background and story. I went to the effort of looking around a lot and trying to come up with something different than everything else out there, to the extent that I am ordering custom eyes/wig and faceup. I have put a ton of thought and effort into my dolls and I would be really mad if someone outright copied them, or used any of the details that I made up for my dolls' background or story.

I design their clothes especially for each doll and would be very upset if I saw someone else who had obviously copied anything about them or the themes that I established for them. I really wanted unique dolls; that is what appeals to me about BJDs, that they can be so different even when they are the same mold.

As for names, well, that can be helped only to a certain point. I think the names I have chosen are fairly unique or uncommon, so it would be pretty blatant infringement to see another doll with their names.

      Copying is *NOT* cool.

    17. I'm pretty sure I've seen someone on the board that has a doll with the same name as my boy, but I really don't care at all. Maybe it's because I don't have anything really distinctive about my boy or something; I don't know.

Maybe I don't understand, but is it really that offensive if someone sees a doll and says, "Hey, maybe this will look good on my doll?" I don't see the problem with using a similar faceup or name, if you think it will suit him/her and you've seen it used with success on a similar doll/the same model. Just because a doll has similar eyes to yours, does that make yours less unique?

I don't know if I'm missing the point, but I'm just not that concerned with what everybody else is doing.

    18. Exactly. I mean, if your doll is named "Sarah," the odds of another person naming their doll that are likely, so you can't say it'd be a blatant copycat situation. But, if like you (and me), your dolls have uncommon/rare/completely made-up names and another one with the same name crops up shortly after you announce your doll's name, well. That's the kind of copycat stuff that really gets my goat. (Whatever that means... I just always wanted to say it. LOL!)

    19. Both my guys are modded, and have face-ups by me. They're names are not original, but you'd have to try to get the mods to look the same.

Now, Paul is the girliest Lati M I've seen because I sanded his features to be rounder. If I saw another Lati M named Paul that owned a Hofner, I'd be pissed. M is my mini Macca. -.-

    20. well I have atleast one thing that separates my dolls from most people's, and that's that they all have a flamel somewhere on them. Devlyn, he has a flamel under his right eyes, and a goth geisha sort of look to him, with lavender eyes, bright pink hair, elf yder, modded eyes, piercings in each ear.
If someone copied him, it'd be pretty obvious, because he's pretty unique, one of a kind from the way I modded him to the way I painted him, to his accessories.
Would I be mad? Well, I think I would probably be annoyed. But other than that, I can't do much about it, can I?
