It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. I expect people to copy...It's inevitable. If you have an El or Shiwoo...Its kinda hard to be 100% unique. I have a completely unique story for all of my dolls...thats what makes them uncopyable. The personality and background is what make the doll...not clothes or face-up.

    2. No!!! YOU copied! Copycat!!! XD

Yah, My Gendel (Grendel is his new name, he abandonded his original name "Cheng") was the highest protector of my twins, Mykal and Matthew. (New names...their original names were Mykosa, and Mattayah) In my story, Grendel is an immortal who is gifted with great powers of intellect, and strength, as well as size, however, his body is very awkward, and gangly. He is very decieving in his demeanor. Looks gawky, and gangly, but incredibly fast, and powerful. He's a great big teddy bear tho LOL He towers over my boys, but that is how his story goes ;)

    3. I'd be flattered if someone wanted to copy my dolls looks but I'd also think it's kind of a shame, these dolls can be anything you want them to be. I have quite a good imagination when it comes to dolls, I can't imagine using someone else's, I want them to be born of me in a sense, to be mine and to come from inside my heart.

    4. My twin brother and I are named Michael and Matthew :)

    5. somewhat, yes... especially if they copied a huge part of my doll that's unique to him and only him >.<

    6. I agree.. ^^
It's not the clothes, or what's on the outside, but the doll's personality..

Although.. If it were hand made clothes, and THEN you see someone else have a copy.. Then I think it would bother me.

    7. Oh, :( I bought a doll I never thought I'd own just because I saw an owner photo that made me fall in love. And I happened to own the same wig (but different eyes). I'm sure no one likes being accused of intentionally copying or not. I do my own face-ups so I really can't copy, but I have the same doll this person does and even considered having them do a face-up for me because I loved their doll so much. I guess I won't anymore. But honestly, my doll, I'm certain, has a totally different backstory, personality, and her own look since I design her clothes.

    8. I don't care if people copy me, unless they copy like.. my doll's looks AND story, or something like that. That would bug me. XD But in today's world, it is IMPOSSIBLE to be totally original. So I don't really care.

    9. "immitation is the sincerest form of flattery"

If someone wanted thier dolls to look like mine, I would be flattered. No two dolls are ever going to be an exact copy. that is the beauty of BJD! :D

    10. If someone made a copy (or attempted copy) of any of my dolls, I'd be a bit annoyed...but there really wouldnt be anything I could do about it.
i'd probably be all like 'uhh..yeah..thats great.......whatever...' to the person (assuming i knew beforehand that it was an attempted copy..like if they said 'look, she's just like your girl!!')

But unintentional similarities? nah, whatever...and its not like I have ooak/le dolls....come on, megu...el...honey...uh huh...(lol)

its like saying 'i want to be the only person with an El who has long black hair' *roflmao*...just not going to happen

    11. i think that copy-cat dollsa re inevitable... honestly, jsut look at half of the dolls in the forum-they are gay boys, j-rock/visual kei, elf, some kind of vampire/demon, or have a random scar of some sort. its just the interestes of the girls of our demographic.

    12. If someone tried to mimic my boys down to their attitude, I'd be pissed. Mostly cause it'd be like, seeing my doll with someone else, doing things they would not do, just.. ick ><;; I can understand two more personal and unique dolls of mine, Toby and Erryn, being copied or unintentially mimicking another doll. They're not horribly individual as far as look goes. Denzel though, if someone else had a sleepy kumi with cat ears and a black and white wig.. I'd have to smack someone D:

Mittwoch... haha, nothing really remarkable about him physically. His character is what I love. <3

    13. I doubt anyone would want silly dolls like mine and copy them

      Or would they? O_o

    14. lol, you're gonna get flamed for that!

    15. I've seen looks in pictures I thought would look good for my BJD, but I'd never steal someone's look intentionally. X.x I get mad if people copy me IRL, so I try to respect that for other people, in case they feel the same way. Some people find it flattering, but I find it offensive and unimaginative. Isn't this hobby so popular because of the possibilities to make whatever you can dream of? So why are people stealing someone elses dream?

I know someone out there will have the same stuff as you, there's no way around that, but having the exact same look as you is a bit unsettling.

    16. **shrug** They're dolls, and look-a-likes and similarities happen with humans, who are far more diverse than they could ever be, so...no, it wouldn't bother me.

In fact, I'd be more likely to fangirl and stalk the doll in question, just because it would probably be a doll that I liked (considering that it would be similar to my own, which I like).

    17. oh wow....LOL now THAT is one heck of a coincidence! LOL

    18. um yah, lemme be the first to say.....
My boys are gay because I'M gay. Not because anyone else has gay boys. Having a vampire doll doesn't really make someone a "copy cat". nor does making one's doll "J-Rock". And i might also add, not only GIRLS collect these? You might want to think a little more about what you are saying before you drop stuff like that out......

    19. [laughs] Maybe so... but there is a certain truth in it, just the same.

No matter what else may be true about our dolls, there really are a finite number of possible combinations of sculpt, wig, eyes and face-up style available to build their "look". There are a finite variety of fashions available to dress them in, and there are certain assumptions and character archetypes that are of common interest among people in the hobby.

Given all that, having "copies" crop up is pretty much inevitable, and the end result is that you'll see a lot of dolls that look similar and have similar backstories... through no owner malice at all. That's just going to become more and more common as the hobby continues to grow, adding new collectors faster than it adds new doll sculpts, doll outfits or doll accessories.

As for myself, I really don't worry about it... My guys are pretty low-profile, way out-of-fashion when compared to the current trends in the hobby, and not all that interesting to begin with. If I saw another Harumatsu or a direct copy of the Alabaster Prince, I'd probably wonder why the other owner couldn't come up with something better! :D

    20. I highly disagree with this sentiment. Anyone who can sew or paint can easily do something new, there is no limit to what people can create for these dolls. The dolls themselves are a testament to this. Everytime people think it's all been done before, someone comes out with a new jointing system, new body esthetic, size, face up technique, clothing style, etc. Just because some people choose to go with an established style instead of venturing outside their comfort zone doesn't mean everyone is so limited.
