Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. I dont know, I dont care, you cant copy my doll

      =P

    2. I think it would bug me if someone tried to copy Griffin. He really is a one of a kind as I designed his face up myself. It would bother me if someone copied that as it was created by me and is a personal thing. It's not hard to use your own imagination.

    3. Yes I know someone whose doll has a characteristic of mine (a major one) and then also has the same mold and skintone and race (both fairies) and it drives me bonkers!

I did buy a doll from a friend and I kept her character for a while...but wound up modding the character...but I still kept her name, wig, and faceup because that's what made her who she is. I wouldn't be able to get to know another doll when I saw her in her former identity

    4. I'm a little funny, I think if they asked ahead of time, I might be flattered. But if they didn't ask me first, I would get pretty angry about it.

    5. *shrug*
Seriously -- an F17 in punky clothing? A Sard in earth tones? A green-eyed Miho in a Kimono? A pale and ethereal DT Soph? I'm sure there are a bunch of dolls that look like mine and when there aren't, it's only because the doll is an unusual sculpt -- someone else having the same sculpt in the same style/colors doesn't necessarily make it a copy since many people's dolls have a whole personality/backstory they have attributed to it.

I think it's natural that we are influenced by beautiful dolls we see and don't see it as a problem. I would be flattered if someone liked the look of one of my dolls and emulated it.

    6. It would bother me if someone copied one of my dolls, but then again, I wouldn't really be able to prove it and I would hate to be the cause of community wank by accusing someone else of stealing my dolls' style. I don't know. Until I've seen it, I guess I can't comment on what I'd do.

I have noticed some strange things going on amongst some of my friends. One friend (Friend A) bought a lovely Bobobie Sprite girl and customised her beautifully with a distinctive colour wig...then another friend (Friend B) bought a BBB Sprite, similar face up, similar coloured wig, similar clothing style, which surprised me but I didn't say anything. Then Friend A bought a little Pukisha and again gave it a distinctive look. Then Friend B also got a Pukisha and it was modeled very similarly to the original Pukisha. Next, Friend A got a Bobobie Mei and gave her a lovely new face up...and today I saw that Friend B has bought a Mei head and is giving it a face up too!

Now, I think this is getting pretty close to home, but I don't want to say anything to my friend in case it looks like I'm stirring things up, and she may honestly not have noticed, but to me it reeks of copying. Is it copying or inspiration? All I know is, if someone close to me kept copying which dolls I bought and the styles I gave them I would be pretty upset.

    7. I know someone who got a Doll like mine; Totally different at first and I thought it looked great; But as time has gone by i noticed That she is copying a lot about my Doll.
She changed the wig to something more like my boy, Eyecolour to match, and now clothes.. when before I thought it was really neat and unique I've noticed that doll B looks like mine. and I find it really irritating... and it's always " He looks more like himself "....... when that self keeps changing.. >_>

So from experience yeah it bothers me a lot when i know the person espcially when they put it in your face all the time

    8. That does not mean it is right.
      It happens.
Unless you want to keep your creations secret and not sell them then no one will be able to copy from you.
Personally speaking, when I do something that is totally my idea, it is hurtful if someone copies it then sells it. But that is life and as some would say "do not take it personal it is only business."
If no one is to copy it the best way to avoid it is have it seen only when it will be in competition. Then your own brand will be on it. No one can claim they made it before you. They you can benefit instead of someone else when it is sold.

I at least think one should wait to copy another's creation once the orginal artist is dead 100 years.

    9. That's exactly what I think. By posting pictures of a one off doll you're automatically advertising them. I'd sooner show mine off than them keep them secret as I love taking pictures of them but I would certainly beepeed off if someone ripped off my custom doll.
I'm pretty sure everyone can tell when a doll has been copied, it's pretty much looked down on.

    10. Personally, I would not like it if someone were to copy my doll(s)-- wig, face-up, clothing style, personality...the reason is because my current doll, and my doll on the way, are both my original characters. They existed in my mind, and in my stories, before I bought the doll and accessories. So I think that it really depends on how much the real owner has bonded with the character/doll and what we as individuals feel is our intellectual property being used without our permission. Some people have said that they would feel "flattered", and that is fine. But personally, I'm not flattered at all by lack of creativity. Investing so much money in these dolls and accessories, but then having to take the looks, personality and everthing directly from someone else...I find it to be cheap and unimaginative. But that's just me.

    11. Doesn't bother me, unless it has the same name and face up and every single article of clothing is exactly like it. Exact duplicate it can be a twin.

    12. it doesn,t bother me that much, i think that people how copy don,t have ideas ore too much fantasy to create some style of there own.

    13. But how does that make it alright for them to carbon-copy the style of someone elses' doll? Can you explain?

    14. I think it would depend, really. If somebody were "inspired" by one of my girls, that's incredibly flattering, amazingly so. I'd fangirl over thier dolls. XD

Wheras, if somebody got a Beryl, sanded her nose, sanded her hooves, then gave her the exact wig, eyes, markings, and tattoos that Jay Say has... Well... We'd have words. There's a reason for each of those things, and unless there's some weird alternate universe me doing it, then I don't think it's kosher. There's a difference between imitation and flat out copying.

    15. I just recently got my Chiron from Souldoll and though he i still brand new in the box with no clothes or a face up I got really upset when I first seen pictures of him posted on DOA by other people. In my heart I really wanted to be the first and only one it own him. lol sounds silly huh, but anyway If i seen someone copying my doll still I know for a fact ill be upset at first... the id calm down and realized some people don't do it intentionally like many said before clothe and wigs and other accommodations for BJDs are limited so there is only so much you can do to completely create a unique doll unless you are really talented at sowing, creating wigs, modding and what not.

    16. Well, this isn't really copying. Once a company puts something up for sale you can't control how many other people have the same doll as you, the trick is to make him unique yourself, not rely on the company to make him unique for you. Yes, there are only so many wigs, but there are many wig makers who can dye wigs any colour you like or style them the way you want. There are also seamstresses you can commission to make your doll's one-off outfit. There are definitely ways of making a doll unique.

I would feel suspicious if a friend or close acquaintance bought all the same dolls as me, but having one doll in common is quite nice. Especially since you can see how different you're both making the doll. I've got a Volks SDC Kurt and I love seeing other Kurts on DoA. He's not a very popular doll, so I like to know he's being loved :D

    17. If someone copied their character (including background etc) or part of Puppet Master, I would get really upset. But I don't think my dolls' styles are unique or popular enough that someone would bother copying them.

    18. if not a doll fans or player to copy your idea?it's a doll company?

      Anyone taste before?

    19. When I was in grade 7, I made a role play character named 'Dash Highwind'
[Hence why my name is RoboDash. Years later in my life he was killed
in a role play and his best friend Chase made him into a robot.]
      Any way...
He has purple, and bright green hair. Has ever since the day I thought him up.
Not long ago [maybe about half a year ago?] I was browsing on DoA,
and noticed someone's signature, the doll had the same two hair colors as Dash. o.o
I didn't take offense or any thing, I thought it was kinda neat.

      But bottom line;
If you've thought about some thing, chances are
90 million others have thought about it too.

    20. *eye twitches* when I got my friend her first dollfie (Obitsu 27cm) a week later we got in a fight, she knew it would piss me off if someone copied my dream dollfie,so she copied my dd.Looked the same in everyway possible. We haven't talked since...*eye twitches*
