Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. That's true. Because they are making a living from it. No one is making a living from their personal BJD characters.

    2. i dont know. i went to a meet up and there was a girl that had the same doll as me (elfdoll Red, but she had the short body and I have the newer body.) and her doll had the exact same wig as my Red and her Red had the same style as mine. Her Red also had blue eyes, but a different shade. I had to laugh because it was just too funny that her Red and my Red looked exact and I felt that Red found his lost brother. That's how I see it really.

    3. well ... I agree with most of you ^^

I don't think anyone would copy me because my dolls are practically unknown ... I've seen many DOI Lukes and DZ Mo's around and of course they can have similar styles ... mostly if they were ordered under the same fullset or stuff like that ...

If someone copied one of my dolls directly ... I guess it would bother me but little things like same clothes, wigs or names ... that's just something you can't stop ne? ^^

    4. I think it's totally flattering!

    5. If it was something very specific and unique and that is very unlikely to be a coincidence, then that would bother me, like ooak custom handmade items for the doll, or tattoos. If the doll was made up of a combination of mass produced items, then I guess it would depend on how many things are similar or the combination used to achieve the look.

    6. I haven't experience a copy cat doll yet. I think it is because I have a weird taste with my doll.

    7. I don't think I would like to have my dolls' personal looks to be copied. But I'm sure most people would just somehow be influenced (if anyone will ever like my future dolls). If someone were to copy all of my personal customizations, then I would just step up my creativity and make my dolls even better than before.

But I don't understand why anyone would want to copy another person's doll when I know that everyone has the capabilities to be different and a million times better than that.

Make both the owner and the other doll's jaws drop to the ground is what I say.

    8. Honestly I believe that when you show pictures of your dolls, you risk someone becoming infatuated with their look. Now it isnt to say that they are neccesarily stealing your doll or copying your doll. Because really we are all mature people who pay large amount of money on these dolls, so whos to say that we cannot turn our doll into something we want.

I understand that people come up with their own characters and looks. But I do hope that people understand that, they do not own others dolls or the will of other people. If anything, if someone "copies" (which then we are ALL at fault) let it be. Theres not much you or I can do as it is not our doll and we do not own others.

So I guess, what Im trying to say is; I feel for other people who have made their dolls into their personal characters and seeing someone elses doll resemble him/her. But just remember, that doll is your own, no one else can understand what that doll means to you or the value you have for that doll. = )

Copy? Theres no such thing. Its apart of life.

    9. At a convention once I saw a pair of twins that had the same doll and they had the same cloths. I guess that doesn't really count as coping since they were twins and they wanted to have the same doll so they could look alike. I just think it'd get boring after a while.

    10. It's inevitable that there will be a lot of look-alikes but in my opinion that's what makes them(BJDs) so much fun. It's the challenge to create something original from what everyone has. Blaitant copycats do tick me off in a way, but unless their copying someone who has a TOTALLY UNIQUE style, then I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. I find it more irritating than anything. I feel like they're cheating themselves from the opportunity to create something to call their own. So I don't hate them so much as I pity them...
Did that make sense or was I just rambling again?

    11. Yeah, it'd probably bother me.
Thing is, all Gena's I see have absolute NO originality...*mauled*
I see about maybe one...two..maybe 3 Gena on here that look special. But from most, they all have red hair/black hair and similar faceup....
Though a black hair Gena is tempting...I like my own style and not want him the same :3 Yes, him.

    12. Wow you guys honestly - most BJD's are "copycats" and "unoriginal" technically.

For me this whole argument is silly because I couldn't conceive the number of goths, lolitas, and steampunk people that style their dolls in the aesthetic that is pleasing to them. I couldn't concieve what number of dolls on here are considered "goth". But by this reasoning all these people are "copying".

Just because there are a ton of "black-haired Gena"'s doesn't mean everyone who wants to style their Gena with black hair is not "original". It means everyone shares a similiar aesthetic sense which I think characterizes the BJD hobby and is what makes us all relate to each other so well.

Pakou-chan is right - there is no such thing as copying. Everything could be concieved as a copy in one way or another - to slam people for such a thing is just mean and rather arrogant if you ask me.

"Well darling MAH doll is better then yours because MINE is more ORIGINAL obviously..."

    13. I'm slightly surprised the issue was raised. It seems like there can only be so many "styles" that some overlap is not surprising. Identical outfits is a bit strange, but other than that, a certain look can't really be 'copyrighted.'

    14. i'd be furious but....as long i know it'smy own style not their's i won't be really bothered.

    15. Hmmm, if someone blatantly copied my dolls... it wouldn't make me angry, exactly, but it would make me feel pretty awkward and uncomfortable. I would probably avoid threads that person posted in and try not to interact with them as it might cause more awkwardness.
I'd also feel kind of sad for that person because I'd feel like they didn't understand the magic of creating a doll that's all your own...

    16. This issue has been of concern to me for a long time.
I have various antique props and concepts that I have used in painting for a long time but then I view galleries and discover there is a similar concept so it prevents me from having fun with a long thought out photo shoot thus I post little as mostly, it has all been done before because in such a large pool of people there are bound to be similar minds and preferences.

I would draw the line at same name, wig, eyes and that flattering if it happened to me yet I find this copying of ideas concept to be childish and petty minded as there is bound to be some crossover of thoughts on how certain dolls should look when we are all going for the same dream and wish everyone would just get over it and have fun without epics that are really small fish in a big sea.

      There...I said it:|

    17. I believe it depends on your idea of the word "copy". Its silly to think we have original thoughts or ideas.. Its all been done, there is too many people out there to have an original idea. So if we all wanted to get uppety about copying, thats like someone who was born with brown hair going out and accusing everyone else with brown hair as copying them. Its really very silly.

There are tones of people who dress there dolls in goth or lolita styles, but that is a style, it isnt copying.

The term I think we all think of when we think of copying is when someone purposely copies someone elses doll. If someone buys a the same mold as someone else, its no big deal.. but if someone buys a doll mold just to copy someone elses "original" character doll, then yes, that is copying. So yes, copying to a degree does exsist.

    18. I wouldn't ever intentionally copy a doll's style and name. Usually i come up with a name and then months later find out that i actually didn't come up with the name (sometimes it's actually from some ancient civilisation I'd never heard of :nowords:). Sometimes I'll get the same shirt or something, but only because i like the way it looks.

    19. I don't know if someone said it already, but i'll try.
      first, you should define "copying".
You see, there are lots of dolls around, and, i have to say, it's difficult to one person to make a doll really "unique". I think that in most cases, those "copy cats" just made their doll the way they like, only to find out later that it accidentally looks like someone else's.
It happens almost everywhere, in music, art, etc... For example, i created a character a long time ago, just to have to edit her heavily because i found out that she was identical to a manga character (not a popular manga, but they really looked like twins!)
And it was completly accidental, since i had never seen another character like her around.
Or maybe, the person liked a doll's style or faceup and tried to make a doll in the same style, but couldn't "differentiate" the styles enough to make the doll individual, if it makes sense. It *is* difficult!

And then, of course, there are some people who actually copy dolls with the intent of copying, and this cannot be forgiven. It shows lack of immagination and respect in other's expression. I am not very forgiving with *intentional* copies.
Other than that, still, as i said there are still the "accidental" copies, and they are way more common, i think :)
So, never be fast at judging those cases. (This doesn't mean that, if i got in a similar situation, i wouldn't act differently from what i'm writing now... Who knews? But i try and be tollerant.)

    20. Hmmm. I think if it was unintentional I wouldn't have a problem with it. I mean, there are many people out there in this hobby. And I'm sure a lot of them have the same taste. So it's bound to happen eventually. Especially if many people are falling for dolls based on promo pics, and just wanna copy how the promo pics look like. Lol. But I mean, if it was intentional, then I might get a little peeved. But hey, it happens. And I'm sure I'd get over it.. Eventually. Lol. I think if someone wanted to cosplay their doll as another doll.. That'd be something to feel honored about. XD

But as of right now, I haven't been in such a situation. There aren't many DollnDoll Lorens out there. And of the ones I've seen, none of them have a default face up. And I haven't seen many, if any, with her wig either.. Sooooo.. Right now I have nothing to worry about. 8D
