Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. I would be upset if I created a look and some one tried to take credit for it. I probably wouldn't do anything about it.

    2. I did not write that I wanted to make replica doll... :)
I only wanted - oh-so-wanted - to have the same doll, her doll, this doll.... she was so beautiful.... but I knew that it was impossible so it was only a thought :D
and I do understand this feeling in others. so for me - nothing wrong in making so-called replicas. it is impossible anyway :) always something will be different :)

    3. My general opinion is that there's nothing new under the sun - and if you've thought of a look for your doll, someone else has probably arrived at that same look, quite independently of each other.

    4. I think that someone with the exact same style is someone who does not listen to their doll's inner voice...
If they actually listened to the doll then there wouldn't be a problem...
If, unintentionally the dolls may look the same, then that is alright, so long as it isn't on purpose.

    5. Personally, when someone tries to copy me and pass it off as their own it bugs me. However, when it comes to dolls I'm not sure how I would feel. Probably bittersweet. But mainly if that happened I would put it behind me and try to listen to what my doll wants.

    6. For the newbies, there is probably a lot of "copying" of the faces/hairstyles seen on DOA, mainly because we're still developing our own style. I've only done one face-up, and I'll admit that I really studied the faces of some of the photos because they are lovely and I didn't have a clue how to paint a face. Considering my artistic ability - or lack thereof!- I'm guessing my girl doesn't look too much like any particular doll, but if there are parts of her that reflect someone else's style, please don't be offended. It's only that you did such a great job.

    7. It's impossible to have a completely unique doll (unless you commission everything), so of course there will be similar-looking dolls. It may bother me a little (and by little I mean microscopic), but I'd forget about it as soon as I closed the window. Now if someone intentionally looked at one of my dolls and decided to replicate it exactly (similar face-ups, clothes, wig, eyes, whatever), then I'd be irked. Probably a little frustrated too since there isn't really anything I'd be able to do about it. But it's not likely since my crew isn't all that popular and such.

    8. Well, if someone copied my doll's whole look and then passed it off as their own idea, I'd be bugged. But if they were just inspired by it--as in, one of my dolls has a 20's-vamp faceup, and if someone did a 20's-vamp faceup in their own way and said it was inspired by mine, I'd be flattered. I think it's okay if you do an element your own way, and give credit. I mean, we're all being inspired by each other, right?

    9. Ive had copycats before and its rlly annoying. they could get u in trouble and mistake them for your doll and what not

    10. I have a common face. There are a lot of people who look like me. At least once a month, I have someone say 'you look a LOT like...[insert name of friend/cousin/acquaintance/etc]'

I'm never offended. I don't feel any less unique. I don't have to be the only on wearing my shirt, the only one with platinum hair, the only short kid. I wouldn't even get annoyed if someone got tattoos similar to mine, there's only so much variation in the world.

That's even a bigger deal with doll sculpts, which look way more similar than human faces. I suppose it would be annoying to have someone copy a custom face-up if you were an artist, because that's bordering on copyright infringement.

Outside of that, things look like other things. That's just life.

I apologize if I'm not understanding the issue at hand here. I just feel like there's only so much variation per sculpt. In terms of wigs and eyes, unless you have something really outlandish there's a finite number of colors and options. I can see unique cases in which something is clearly a rip-off but, I just think there's bigger issues in the world...y'know, nuclear war, oil spills, Tom Delay on Dancing With The Stars...

    11. I think the definition of inspiration vs stealing is just what it comes down to. Inspiration [and influence] will come from whatever we look at...just, as with say a painter or a digital artist ect. don't exactly copy. I guess it's really subjective and not really something you can define, though...

    12. hmm this never crossed my mind before, but I know there are a few Ciel (kuroshitsuji) luts kid delf borys and I know mine wasn't the first. If it was an original character and someone copied it down to the T, it's hard to say. I have a feeling I'd be more shocked than anything... haha

    13. I think the only thing that would bother me would be if someone downright copied Kaien's look, from his custom face up, down to the whole concept of his character. I do know there are more Afra dolls out there and that it's not a limited mold and people can do what they want with their dolls It's just the thought of someone taking the entire idea and claiming it for their own.

    14. Im more flattered than bothered by it. Unless they copy without their own interpretation.

    15. It wouldn't bother me ... there's so many 'unique' styles out there that it would be too hard to be wholey and completely unique.

    16. Never really had that problem before with BJD's, but. . . I suppose it would depend on my mood. ^^;;;;

Some times I can be slightly annoyed, other times, I would not mind and even take it as a compliment to my unique style.

    17. One of my dolls has a factory face-up, thus I wouldn't be surprised at seeing another Soom Lazule with the same face-up. I would be mildly irked if the other owner went for the same/similar hairstyle, but I also think it's a damn nice looking hairstyle and if someone else thinks the same, I can live with that.

I would be unbelievably angry if someone went so far as to copy my character concept for him however.

    18. Well I think a better way to look at it is great minds think alike. You'll always find dolls that are similar to yours. Think of how many REAL people look like each other? Now think of all the genetic possibilities for that. Not much, the human gene pool and style is infinite. Now think of dolls and what a small "gene pool" and style source they have, what with the slowly expanding yet still limited amount of doll companies to buy from. A mold is just that, a mold, a copy of a copy. So yes, there will be similarities whether you like it or not based on the most in demand looks for that particular mold.

Personally, I would be more angry if someone used my dolls name, than if they used the same wig. Through customizing I am basically ensuring that my doll has highly definable and unique traits to identify her as Yeyo Yuma, and not so-and-so, copy copy etc.

I try to have my own ideas, and I find that I am lucky enough to have ideas you don't see very often. :)

PLUS since I make her own clothes, no one possibly has the same patterns as me unless they copy me, which would be hard to do seeing as my choices in fabric are also unique. :)

    19. highly similar dolls don't bother me at all. If somebody's doll of the same mold happens to share the same fashion sense then I would just figure, "Hey, it's the same mold. if our taste in aesthetics is so similar, it kind of makes sense the fashion would be similar too."
If it's a similar Face up it's "I wonder if they liked mine and learned from it." or "Maybe we learned from the same examples."

Now, when things get Identical, or if it's something REALLY unique (Like Archane's full body makeup on another Kyle Reese) Then I would be flattered, but would expect a little credit. Even if it's just "I liked Ayila's so-and-so, so I wanted to do something similar." in one of their Galleries.

Honestly, I haven't run into this yet, at least not that I've noticed. Probably has something to do with the fact that I make most of my own clothes, so I never really get a "OMG, That's Necross's shirt on another Hound!" Or "wow, that Ren's skirt is the same one I had Lane wear last photostory!"

    20. I think this expresses my feelings on the matter exactly! Thanks for saving me a lot of typing.:) There is so much visual inspiration around here...it's one of the best things about Den of Angels. How wonderful that we are inspiring one another to create our very own visions. Carbon copying...no. Evoking inspiration and stoking the creativity of others...yes!
