Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. its hard to keep yourself from coying something.. "Oh, I wonder if that would look good on my doll too..." TO get a new look for your doll is hard enough. someone would have to call at you.

    2. I got an Abio Angel Yi because I fell in love with a doll that I'd seen.
Everything else for him though is all his own c:

I did go OH the other day, though. I'd faved a pic on DA of a doll wearing a striped hat and scarf ages ago, and then a few weeks ago I discovered dollmore and was so happy that I found something stripey for Fin, as I love stripes, and then the other day I saw the photo again and realised I'd unintentionally bought Finnian what looks like the exact same ones. XD

Hum, I don't think I'd ever copy another persons doll, but sometimes it's impossible not to be inspired by them :)

    3. Well things like this do happen XD
But if it was on purpose I'd be peeved unless credited.
I had once seen a doll, a really really beautiful doll, custom face-up and clothes hand made and seriously it looked really good, then few weeks later after posting it someone copied it and claimed the style was theirs? After a few roundabouts the person admitted it was copied.

Stuff like that CAN give people anger. As for me I can tell you this, I'm safe from all that. Why?
Cause all the clothes I make make it look like I brought them out from hell, they look THAT ugly the clothes XDD

And because I am weird, the wigs I use are different from the average ones, meaning I keep a secret tucked inside XD

    4. It's impossible not to blend in some things you have seen somewhere else into your doll's style. That might be a certain wig or eyes, or clothes or human fashion.
But if I would spot another doll that could be the twin of my own doll, that would really annoy the hell out of me!!! Because all of them have customised face ups/mods and one of them is an original character of mine. Copying is just lack of creativity I'd say and getting credits for somebody else's ideas/work. An easy way out :vein
      Come on people, be creative!

    5. I would think that if you're buying professionally made things for your doll, there's a fairly high probability that someone else with the same tastes will have dolls that have similar style to yours.

As far as faceups are concerned, though, I think I could understand frustration if someone wanted to copy it exactly. That said, I also don't think there's anything wrong with being inspired by other people's work. ^_^ ; As long it's not a carbon copy.

    6. Do you copy someone else dolls look or see someone you know done it? Why or why not?

    7. Copying someone else's doll is generally frowned upon...I don't think I've ever seen anyone doing it, though I've heard of an occasion when someone was accused of doing it...

I don't copy anyone's doll, because I want my dolls to be mine, and look the way I want them to look. I like thinking up their looks, and even though they are nothing special (no fantasy, no special tattoos or colors...just your everyday guys and girls) they feel more mine this way. I"m not into hero-worshiping other people's dolls anyway...(though there are some I admire)

    8. Well I don't think there is anything wrong in thinking a dolls is pretty and thinking a similar faceup, outfit, or wig would be cute on your next or current doll. But it is usually nothing more than that.

    9. For me, the purpose of my dolls is giving physical form to characters in the books I've written, and who I have special attachments too. I can appreciate a doll that is simply beautiful, but personally get no enjoyment from owning such a thing. To copy someone elses doll would defeat the purpose of why I own my dolls.

    10. My dolls are physical embodiments of my characters, so their looks wouldn't be based on other people's dolls (infact the characters predate my entry into the hobby, and most predate abjds period). It's certainly possible for inadvertent overlap to occur when it comes to things like hair/eye color, clothing etc, but it's not intentional.

    11. I wouldn't copy everything about another doll, that would be boring. I do look at other people's for ideas though.

    12. I think it's all in the eye of the beholder unless it's an exact copy. Let's face it "it's all been done." There are black and white maid outfits, fantasy robes, merpeople, vampires galore, etc. coming out our ears.

    13. Depends how much you're copying I think. One or two parts like the clothing or wig, sure why not?

      The whole thing? That would destroy all originality D;

    14. My question is, WHY would anyone want to do that? Is "talentless and unoriginal" such a desirable title (even if no one calls you on it, personally, if I were to copy someone's doll that phrase will always come up in my mind)? Besides, finding a doll's look is the most exciting part of owning it, IMO.

No, I've never done it. I'll be honest, even if it sounds egotistical, but my dolls will always be the ones I like the most, in the whole entire hobby. Yeah, some people own pretty dolls, but I never see anything in then besides "pretty doll", and I don't own dolls for the "pretty" because that just makes them a hollow empty shell of prettiness on the surface. There's nothing of ME in there, and plus, I don't do shallow very well.

Now, there have been situations where someone did something with their doll that I would've done, because we share similar tastes, and that's awesome.

    15. I've never done it and never will. But I have seen people who do it (from face-ups to outfits to photographs, and I think it's just DISRESPECTFUL AND WRONG)

But the line is thin to distinguish between copy and coincidence, the community is small so it is not unusual to have the same items as another doll owner.

So even if you are so sure that someone is copying, they can always argue that it's just coincidental. So there's really no end to this kind of thing (unfortunately)

And sometimes there really is no telling who is really the original one because just because you've never seen someone else do it, doesn't mean it hasn't been done. But really, YOU should know yourself deep in your heart if you are intentionally copying someone or not. It just depends on how honest you are about it. If you know that you did copy, someone else out there knows it too. So it depends on your moral standings. It is not hard to be a little creative I don't think. So if you take the time and effort, you can still be inspired by someone original and then come up with your own thing. That's the right way to do it. People who copy, keep doing it without any regards for anyone, are people who have no shame (and there are many of them out there. I see them everyday)

    16. I don't see how I could personally copy anyone else's doll- mine have their own characters, and while I love reading about other people's, I don't want them as my own. Not to mention, I don't know anyone who'd copy someone else's doll either, it just doesn't make sense, these dolls are pretty much individual by default- no two face-ups are ever the same, even the defaults will have slight differences. Sure, you can get the same wig and eyes as another doll, but you still won't have the same doll. That's just the way of it.

    17. I don't think anyone should copy other persons doll. But that being said sometimes you make a doll your own, but then see a doll that looks similier. You didn't copy and he or she didn't copy it just ended up like that. I do just idea from other dolls (wig; type, colour, or style, clothes, skin type, face-up;no one can ever copy one) I never copy anything, just find things I like for mine.

    18. I kinda sorta tried to with my first doll. But within minutes of me opening him Malice showed me how different his personality was. And that was the end of that.

    19. I agree its very rude to copy someone's doll. I have never done it and will not do it. I like to make the charaters mine and to copy from someone else just is no fun. I will say that somtimes hair eyes and other things might be similer on some dolls as other people said. There are only so many combo's of hair and eyes. I think if anything is "copied" it mostly just the creature or job. I mean as some one else pointed out there are dozen of Vampire to mermaid/men and so on and so forth so on. So that is not really coping but I am sure owners draw from thing they seen to myth and ledgend.

    20. I try not to outright copy anything. I may see one element of a whole design and decide to use it or something similar, but I always try to put my own spin on things. I want my dolls to look the way I imagine them, to the best of my abilities (that does not include face-ups, only because I can't do them).
