Copy Cats! - does it bother you if someone tries to copy your doll's style/looks?

Jan 19, 2006

    1. I have not seen many copies of my dolls simply because I do not show them to people often, I would be very flattered if someone actually like the style so much! lol

      But I feel strange when people rant about others "copying" them, and of course I do not encourage just using others ideas but sometimes, having the same name; or similar combination or even a similar tatoo is not a big deal IMHO. I named my first doll "Celeste" and was to my surprised a famous member also have a doll, looking alike, named that. I was in panic after finding out someone has a beautiful Schoo A named Justyn because that is my cousin's name!( and he named his own doll that...= =;;;)

      Sometimes I see some Chinese websites, with owners from Taiwan or Hong Kong listing all the names of their past, present and future kids hoping to "claim" them, though I can understand why they would like to keep their dolls' uniqueness, it is rather silly.

      This is just my opinion, hope no one is offended. ^^

    2. Well they are not that unusual but two people on the board with the name quixalionasion (example only)

      LOL I am not at all bothered by my dolls sharing names with other memeber if the name is clearly not unique. I do understand I can't own a name. But that wouldn't stop be from being a bit shocked to see a name that's totally unique presented on someone elses doll.

    3. I've seen many dolls with the same name as my Shin'ichi ('Shin' for short), and on the whole it doesn't bother me since Shin wasn't even his original name--it evolved after I came to know him a little better--And like it's been said tons of times, common names will inevitably be used often.

      What would bother me though is when people go to great lengths to duplicate exactly the face-up that took you hours to create and the personality that took your doll, possibly years, to evolve into. I'm not saying that it is wrong to admire certain dolls you find fascinating, but rather mold and rebuild those aspects you admire and make them completely your own, instead of just flat out copying.

      What truly pulled me into the world of Asian Bjd was how each doll was clearly its own being, so saying that, I don't think any doll can be truly copied. I find that comforting because if anyone ever tried to copy Shin I know they wouldn't even come close (even if they duplicated his face-up and personality), because Shin is his own entity and there are so many subtlties that he wont, and probably never will, tell me about. And think on the bright side, no one can do a face-up exactly the same as the original they admire--especially if you are just looking at a picture on your monitor. So be proud if you are the original! The only draw back to this is if the person who copied you started to state that you're the one that copied their doll..that would really chap my hide.

      wow that's a lot >__<;; I'll be quite now, though I still have a lot to say on the subject, but I'll spare you all since what I want to say has possibly already been saidx20. O^^O

    4. Well...seeing as I have a Full set Camine with a default face-up...XD Well there plenty of other Camines that look exactly like mine....or at least when he's wearing his default eyes and wig ^^; For that very reason, I changed his eyes and gave him a red wig :D

      Aaannnddd...There are 3 or 4 other Sakuya's on the forum. Not unexpected though ^^ I'm a big fan of Angel Sanctuary, and thats where I got the name from. There are a few other mangas out there with Sakuya as character names too...so I'm not too surprised :)

    5. Oops! I should have amended that one before I posted. Silly me. Yes, I have the Jadis doll. Well, I'm working on creating the Jadis Juri. But geez, that chainmail dress is going to take me forever!!

    6. if intentionally yes, it unintentionally no.
      I don't like copies, but many people sees them where there aren't any copy

    7. I think it's inevitable that some dolls will look very similar, and have similar attitudes-after all, if a doll owner wants a sexy male doll, they're likely to have them wear unbuttoned shirts or leather, slightly wild black hair, and be drawn to certain head molds and face-up styles. This doesn't mean that they're copying, just that those combinations lead to 'sexy' just like some lead to 'sweet.' I know that there are dolls like mine: an angel with a rather violent streak/attitude problem. I know they won't look exactly like her with that personality, and I know there are probably dolls who look like her without the same personality.
      Now, if someone said, "I saw this girl doll and she was so cool so I copied everything about her now I'm cool too!11!!11" I'd be annoyed. However, I'd give a nice little talking to/verbal b----slap to whoever did it, explaining if they want their own doll, they really need to have their own look.

    8. I've seen another Takeo on here ages ago.
      But, I DID name him after a book character in the first place. So technically I stole it right from the very beginning!

      And I've never seen two boys quite like mine.
      But I think I may be a little annoyed if I ever did. I consider them both really unique.

    9. You might've been surprised at the answer, to tell you the truth!!

      I was really worried when I found out that one of my chosen doll-names was already taken (and by Blastmilk, a 'prominent' BJD person who I admired!) . . . but then I decided that since our dolls and their characters were VERY dissimilar, and I had a longstanding reason for choosing that name (fourteen years ago, a dear friend had a daughter named "Geneva," and one of the choices I'd suggested to her had been "Ginevra," after Ginevra de'Benci, a woman whose portrait was painted by by Leonardo daVinci . . . she didn't choose that variation of the name, but I'd hung onto it for all these years ). And since B's Ginevra looks and acts nothing like my redheaded blue-eyed lesbian spitfire T. Bee-A, I don't think that either of us is losing out by having a name we love for our dolls.

      I also know that Gabriel/Gavin/etc. are not uncommon names, but MY Gavriel is named after Guy Gavriel Kay, an author whose work I love. He's got a stock DOD face-up and a DOD wig, I wouldn't be surprised if there IS a doll out there that resembles him at this point, given the popularity of Tender Too. I'm not worried about it, Gav is *Gav*, and nothing anyone else could do would take away from that for me.

      To me, if someone has a valid reason for choosing a name (or a look, or whatever) that's original to *them*, it's not 'copying' if it happens to have some aspects in common with another person's doll . . . it's just when a *direct* copy is made, to me, that it winds up being an issue of copycattery rather than just convergent evolution.

    10. I have a very unusual name myself, so I'm fond of choosing relatively common names. That way, I don't have to explain their origins every three seconds like I do with my own name.

      Elsie told me her name was Elsie, period. I did search DOA afterwards & see there was at least one other Elsie (different sort of doll entirely), but... can't help it. That's her name, and there's nothing I can do about it.

      My Hound, on the other hand, has yet to reveal his name. A couple have come to mind, and yep, turns out other dolls have the same name - and I've discarded those names as options. That must mean they aren't right, which is fine. I've actually thought of him as "the Hound" for so long that I'm worried that might BE his name. Eek!

      There are a couple of individual dolls styled so beautifully by their owners that I'd love to own those exact dolls, but I'd never *copy* them, OR buy those dolls if they ever went up for sale. I like the ability to change the entire doll on a whim, and I'd have to leave those particular dolls alone, since what I'd want was THAT styling. If that's the case, hoarding their photographs in my private album for drooly-time is a far cheaper way to cope with individual doll lust.

    11. I understand when that alot of things I happen to like are liked by alot of other peeps as well. Like Gothic, Lolita, and cyber styles, it's pretty common. Names, well, I tend to stick a few names I happen to love, Megumi didn't stray too far from Megu, the others for other reasons.

      Styles are a hard thing, because there's inspiration in almost everything that you see. How many peeps have looked at something or someone and said "I like that, I wonder how I'd [or my doll] would look in that ..."

      So seeing similar things don't bother me. Take Jun for instance, his wig is from Aziza, I know that this wig isn't a one off or anything and there's got to be others out there with the same exact wig. The same goes with eyes or default face-ups. Or how Megumi's face-up is from Illness Illusion, many people go to her for her wonderful work and she has a style you can recognize instantly. Many people are going to end up with something similar if they opt for those things.

      Seeing an exact replica though, that would bother me a bit. There's only one Jun to me, there's only one Megumi, only one Jenova, ect. So If I happen to see their dopplegangers out there, I'm not sure what I'd think....

    12. Maybe I'm just weird, but "copying" doesn't bother me that much o_o

      I don't think it's that big of a deal for someone to use a name that you made up first. What is the difference between someone seeing a common name and thinking "oh, that's a nice name, I think I will name my doll that", and seeing a name that a person made up theirself and thinking "oh, that's a nice name, I think I will name my doll that"? I mean, all common names started off with someone making it up, and there only being one person/doll/whatever named that, and then other people thinking it was a nice name and stealing it, right? And lots of people use names from books that the author made up, and I don't see the authors getting angry about people stealing their names~

      And with personalities, I think it's okay for someone to be influenced by your doll's personality~ Everyone gets their influence from somewhere, whether it be from a person you know in real life, a book/movie character, or another person's doll.

      I think people being copied should just feel flattered, not angry :)

    13. Influence is one thing; straight-up copying because one can't be creative enough to come up with their own ideas is another, I think. Would it bother me if someone copied my dolls? Oh, hell yes. I've put too much time, effort, thought, and love into my dolls and the overall story to let someone else "ride" on what I've achieved.

      Mmm...sorry? =^^=;;

      I remember getting flak from people when I told them I wanted to name my boy "Justyn" back when I bought his first incarnation several years ago. They thought it sounded too much like a girl's name, I guess. (I think they meant "Justine".) But I held my ground and I'm glad I did, because I can't think of him any other way. Heck, I can't even spell "Justin" right anymore because I'm so used to spelling it the way I know best - with a Y.

    14. I think naming a boy with a girl's name is cute!! I call one of my boys Lucy ^___^

    15. I don't think anyone could accidentally copy every trait, and look of your doll. I think every doll has its own personality, just like people. But if someone purposely did it, then I would be mad. Otherwise, every doll is an individual, whether their hair and eye color is the same or totally different. Someone else might not see it, side by side a look a like, but certainly mom or dad does.

    16. Jocelyn's name is apparently more commonly used for girls, except (at least according to the all-knowing Wikipedia) in Quebec, where the spelling is exclusively male. =o_O=;;

      I wanted him to have a girly name. It suits him, I think. XD

    17. I'm not certain names can be really considered as copying ^^;;; With the possible exception of extreme cases where a name is either wildly unique or completely made up.

      So many names are just so common e__e;;

      As for appearance . . . um, I've yet to see anyone copy any of mine? Or even really look similar.

    18. Yeah, unless my character was named Iadgfsfhger'dofd, and had zebra-striped hair, purple lips and neon orange eyes, then I think that some parts will definitely happen to occur in more than one doll. However, I've never seen another female doll with my girl's 'default' wig. o-0

    19. Deleted...

    20. OMG really ? That's actually really cool ^__^ I had always assumed that because the wig was on your site, many were sold. So yay, It makes Jun even more unique ^^

      I really lovers his hair, I can't thank you enough for the wig ^^ [I'd been wanting to email you for so long about getting a back up -lol]
