Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. Can't say I have. I've only recieved one doll so far, and even when she was naked and without a wig on, I still loved her. I loved her little lips and eyes. My only regret is not having any camera on hand for her box opening.

    2. The first doll that came home for me was actually the second I bought (A secondhand tiny off the MP) and I loved her. # weeks later when my AoD An arrived, I was very much put off. After spending so much time with my tiny, Stormy (my An) looked so large, gangly, and her boobs were way bigger than I expected. I hated her.

After a week, in which my boyfriend almost stole her from me because he loved her so much, I realized her beautiful points and adore her now.

The hate may have also been from a knitting fail on my part.

    3. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I don't know about hating him, but when I opened my DOI A&D I wondered what I had been thinking. I had seen as many owner photos of him as I could find, but he looks a bit different in real life. I did order him blank because the DOD face-ups (while pretty) just didn't fit what I had in mind for him. His head is huge, and so are his ears. His eyes seem much narrower then the DOD pics and something always make them want to go cross-eyed. The wigs and eyes I'd bought for him just didn't work. After 2 months of waiting, I just felt disappointed, maybe I just built him up to much in my head. Not to mention he was my first 70cm doll and the size and weight did shock me a little.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
It took a while. Face-ups, sanding, body blushing... I couldn't get the face-up to where I liked it until recently. I could sew decent clothes for all my dolls so far except him and his stupid fat thighs. But I've finally gotten his face-up to where I like it and gave him piercings. I've found the perfect eyes, and I've bought him the most clothes out of all of my dolls. I couldn't find a wig that was perfect for him, so I made one.
Right now I'm completely in love with him. I wouldn't say he's my favorite, but he's the one I'm closest too. Maybe it's all the effort I had to put in.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Not really, he may not be exactly what I had envisioned for him, but he still came out perfect for the character I had planed for him.

    4. I am so new to the doll world and I have found a wonderful on line friend who helps me. One thing she taught me was about the factory or pro photos. I started with fashion dolls but a lot of the things she has taught me apply to BJD's as well. When I was buying my first repainted doll she said ask the artist for a non pro photo and never buy before you see the photo. It is amazing what photographers can do with a photo. Of course you can't ask a company for a non pro photo. But you can wait and watch for people to post on Den of Angles and I would bet that if you opened a thread asking for photos of a doll you will get plenty of people who are willing to send you their photos.

When I got my first BJD I was so amazed at how different she looked than her photos. To me she looked so much better all the photos made her look like she was skinny and kind of frail. So when I opened her I was so happy to see a wonderfully made doll. I still keep her in her pillow because I am so afraid she will get broken. I have made 2 outfits and she came out for fittings and then for photos and then back in her box she went.

    5. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
No. I hope this never happens to me. I try to look at owners pics on this forum before I buy, so I have an idea of what it looks like without professional lighting and makeup etc.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      N/A

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
If this ever happens, I will try my best to fix the situation with what's easily changeable first. If that wasn't enough, I would send the doll to a talented artist for facial or body modifications.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
      N/A

    6. I wouldn't say I hated her but the order went wrong due to a problem with my bank not sending the money over so she took 3 months to arrive, when she finally did her face up was totally different to the default promo picture. Which was the soul reason I liked her. I did few things with her, changing her hair and eyes but she never really looked the way I wanted her to. I didn't love her as much as my other two dolls and I did feel bad about it. I tried hard to bond with her but when I saw everyone elses doll I always really missed the detail of that face up which first drew me to her.
In the end I got a new doll to be that character, I still have the original doll, she's nude and boxed. I must have some feelings for her as I still haven't sold her yet. lol

    7. i'm lucky so far all the doll i got i loved them instantly.
i make A LOT of research to make sure his face will look good in every angle because i didnt want this to happen...

    8. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?

Hate is maybe too strong a word. I have been disappointed in two or three dolls when I opened the box and saw them. Two of them were smaller than I expected, and the other one was stark white instead of cream colored and and I couldn't figure out how to make them work with the rest of my collection. I like to invent family groups and stories and these were an odd size and color.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?

No. I put each of these dolls away for a bit to decide what I could do with them.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).

I kept the first one (tiny Elfdoll Sylph) in her box for months before I finally got an idea to make her a Tinkerbelle costume and then instantly fell in love with her. The second doll (PD mini Riz) looked sick to me and I never did warm up to her and sold her. The third one (Narsha Shabee) I still have. I really love him even though his head is much smaller than I expected, and have decided to keep him. I think I will just experiment when photographing him so he will look in better scale with my other dolls, or maybe buy him a shorter body.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.

No, I don't feel bad. I buy lots of dolls without seeing them in person first, so I'm surprised there haven't been more of them that were a problem for me. I try to find owner photos to see before I buy, but that doesn't always work.

    9. Oooooh yea.... It was the Limited Edition Elfdoll - The Pink Vivien from Denver Dolls. Love the PR pics of her and even though she didn't fit into my French vision of the other dolls, I just had to have her. When I opened the box and saw that HUGH HEAD I gasped. I loved here colour, weight, eyes and even her sculpt, but that head size was a bit much.

I had to find a way to make that head not look so large for the body. So I did a little costuming magic and gave her padded shoulders (like on the clothes during the 70's-80's) on all her garments to balance her head to her shoulders. Love her head now that it's not so "large".

    10. Happened or not, I am afraid anyone may be exposed to that fear (of what seen on pictures might not feel the same that resin in front of you) sometime while waiting and until receiving and checking out BJD.

Now my personal experience about it:

Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I must say, fortunately, that has never happened to me. I felt a bit strange about an small few by facial features (Their faces are the first I try to see when I receive them) which were kind of different from the already home, original companies were other ones than the usual (Luts, but I should say Cerberus Project) for me and so on, but I have never hated any of my BJD or felt they were not what I was wishing and waiting for.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
I just got used to those differences really quickly because in fact for me all the sculpts I got really matched the characters I had in mind the way I see them in BJD.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I am truly glad I can tell I have never been in that situation.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I do not feel bad by the fact of finding those few a little strange at the beginning. In my opinion that happened because I was not used to those other molds styles.

    11. I fell in love with Soom's Gena sculpt & after saving my dolly dollars I finally ordered her. The pictures on Soom's site showed that she had a kind of "autumn" facial coloring with gorgeous brown eyes...I was hooked! When she finally arrived & I eagerly uncovered her face, there she was with PINK cat's eyes. UGH! I was sooo disappointed. I was kind of new to the BJD world at that time & didn't have extra eyes 'cause I didn't think I'd need them. I soon figured out that's what they meant by "random eyes" LOL. I put her back in her box & ordered some new dark brown eyes for her. When the eyes arrived & I changed them...there was my girl & I've loved her madly ever since!

    12. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
For the most part, I think I "hate" every doll when I open it. This was most apparent with both my FCS dolls, since you are never quite sure how they'll look until they arrive.

Even for premade dolls with accurate pictures, a actual 3D object in front of you is quite another thing. Head shapes you didn't expect, blushing that looks odd, sculpts that look less perfect when you actually handle them, head and body proportions that seem a bit off, eyes are not quite the right color, etc. As a rule, I have to get new dolls dressed to look like "factory spec" ASAP.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
More like after that they look odd to me for a few weeks. After that, I get used to the doll being around and looking like they do. And after that I can start bonding. I wouldn't buy the doll if there wasn't something that I liked about it, after all. So I just need to be reminded of that something.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I prefer natural faceups so I don't really need to change those since that's how I order it and that's what I get (natural is default for most companies I think). Changing the wig and outfit really helps though. I would change eyes, but I don't exactly have a lot of them and I don't like buying eyes blindly (pun ).

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Bad for the doll? Not really since they're dolls. But bad because I wasted money? Sure. That's why I have really long wait periods to adjust to a new doll. If it's possible to buy impulsively, it's possible to sell impulsively as well. The problem most companies present are with limited dolls where you must decide NOW.

I'm simultaneously picky and not picky. Pickiness is for before the purchase since it is unwise to buy everything which comes your way. Not picky in that once chosen, I can stick with a doll come what may without much problem. As for my least liked doll, it took half a year, but I think I'm finally warming up to my 2nd FCS girl... :)

    13. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
      Yes, Stephen.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes? If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Nope. It actually took playing with him in a photoshoot and making him the correct outfit, I believe, before I really settled with him. It looked far too severe at first and I kept thinking, "Vulcan" because his ears were way too pointy. Stephen was supposed to be cheery and bright. But then the more I got to work with him and the more I got to know his character through the book it was a better match than I thought. XD

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Not at all. He was bald, eyeless, and naked in a box. It's a bad first impression! XD

    14. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes, my Soom Cass. She ws the most expensive doll I'd ever bought, but as soon as Soom released pics of her, I knew I had to have her. She was the most beautiful doll I'd ever seen. I ordered her fullset, and waited almost 7 months for her to arrive despite paying her off at once on the first day of sales.

She arrived !!defective!! with two left legs and an undrilled hand, but that wasn't the worst of it. When I opened the box, she looked *nothing* like the doll in the promo shots. She was pale and uninteresting and dead, as opposed to the beautiful, vibrant, ethereal doll I'd hoped for.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No. If anything, it got worse because that's when I started ralizing how badly Soom had screwed up in making her, by not drilling parts or even giving me the correct ones.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I tried out many different eyes and wigs on her, hoping for something that would click. But after only a few days, I put her up for sale. All that remains of her now is one dress, which I elected to keep.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No, though I do feel duped by Soom. From now on, I will only buy their dolls second-hand, due to how disappointed I was with her, and how much trouble I had getting her parts replaced. Their photos, both of dolls and parts (namely, eyes) are incredibly misleading.

    15. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I wouldn't say I HATED him, but...when Sage (Dollzone Kay) first got here, I was nearly convinced that I'd chosen the wrong doll for the character. He was really cute and all, he just wasn't Sage to me.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
It took a fair amount of time, actually.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I had the right wig for him before I even received the doll, which helped, but I couldn't for the life of me find the right eyes for him, as they're an odd color. I was really tempted to wipe the faceup and start over completely, but I decided to reserve final judgement until I found him a pair of decent eyes. After I had a pair of custom acrylics made and popped them in his head, my opinion changed completely! He really was a perfect fit for the character, I just needed him to be accurate before I could see it for myself. XD

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
      I don't think there's reason to. ^_^

    16. No, thank God. O 3O Dolls are way too expensive for me to open them and not like them! But then again I guess that gives me enough time to think them over and make solid ideas for them and stuff, so I know for sure which ones I want, so I won't end up disappointed. xD;;

    17. yes a Resinsoul Dark Tan Mei...she had whitish powdery stuff all over her, and her faceup scratched from their sanding..she was a mess....I sold her that night..

    18. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes, there was a doll I purchased that I thought I was going to like but ended up not liking. It was a crobidoll dante. He just didn't fit the character I was looking for. His head also seemed to be too small for my taste and the joints were not what I was used to.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      No.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I tried wigs/eyes/clothes and I couldn't get myself to like him. So he went right into his box and decided to sell him after a while.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No not really. He just was not what I expected him to be.

    19. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Closest I got to that was with elfdoll pig - the head was three times the size I envisioned the body was so small and weird looking. It actually made me feel sick, its was kinda freakish.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Bad? no I sold the pig asap... and was very happy to sell it!
I have had a few others too that when they arrived they had issues that are proportional things that I really didn't like. One from dim mini with a bulbous forhead that was a total shock and I really didn't like her either I also sold her right away. If I hate them I don't try to bond I sell them. I have too many dolls I totally adore I don't need any that I really don't like sitting around.

Sometimes I doll is interesting and in these cases its not hate its more strange and curious, Domadoll cookie fell into this category I try to bond and play around allot with eyes and wigs because this kind of doll might end up being total love in the end. (though I did sell cookie as she was a bit too different in the long run).

    20. i hated my peaks woods fob punky beetles body for about 10 minutes. he was so yellow and clumsy. i saw pics before but it was even worse in person. but his face made me melt and i´m okay with his body now. he still doesn´t fit into many clothes and his hands are still way too big, but he´s my -cough- podgy -cough- favourite of them all.

      i don´t think could hate a face :)
