Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

1. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Well, I didn't really hate, more like I was taken aback when I got 2 of my dolls because I had the images from their webpages in my head and to finally see them in person was quite something else. First, when I got my Akando, it's not so much disappointment as puzzlement. I went "Hmm." And I had this nagging feeling that I kinda didn't like something about him but I couldn't pinpoint what. But I figured I'd give some time to get accustomed as I didn't really want to give him up.

The other doll is my most recent one: Buddydoll Teo. I was pretty surprised by his much intense and darker faceup than what was pictured at the site. I kinda wished it's milder and less seemingly dark and dreary, but as with Akando, I figured some time to get accustomed and play around would help us adjust to each other.

Did your opinion change after a few minutes?
It took some days. "Time heals" and all that. I can be pretty malleable with my views, and I don't like the idea of planning to acquire something and then just immediately decide to get rid of it at the heat of the moment just because the first impression isn't at all that impressive. It makes me think all that planning had been for nothing, and I don't like wasting time and money.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
n/a

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No, because you can't help the way you feel about something. Eventually your feelings will change, so it's best to just be optimistic and wait for that to happen. A "eureka!" moment will come and make you think that they're not as bad as you first thought.

2. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I think "hated" is a little bit to hard - I bought a Fullset Dollzone Lola which I totally adore on the promo pics... I knew nothing about BJDs in general and didn't knew about the whole problem with the promo pics and photoshop. I think the biggest problem was her wig: She looked like Albert Einstein after a huge explosion. And it didn't helped that her eyes were too bright in my opinion. And she had this sad look...

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Sadly no.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Because of the fact that I hadn't joined Den of Angels on that point I waited. And I was afraid because I already had my second doll on the way. But my guy changed everything. He looks gorgeous in the crazy wig und my girl looks better with his one (she still needs some work but I adore her now)

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I felt bad, but now I'm happy with her.

3. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes, although it was a second hand doll from Ebay: Dollzone LinLan, she was HUGE, really ungainly and massive next to my other SD girls. The face IMHO only looks good from a few angles, it's very angular and masculine. Moral of that story: I should have researched more! I also had a momentary wobble with my eagerly awaited DOT E-an, after wanting her for ages, when she came blank, her face sculpt seemed so minimal...
HDid you opinion change after a few minutes?
With LinLan, sadly she hasn't grown on me and is looking to be rehomed, E-an-it was love at maybe third sight :o
HIf it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect)
I tried all sorts with LinLan because I felt guilty about spending all that money, even though she was second hand, so I redid her face-up, tried lots of wigs, eyes, outfits, did some photoshoots and sadly still can't take to her
HDo you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
LinLan has to go... I still feel guilty, like she's this friend that I talk about behind her back, but she looks so odd and alien next to my other, softer, cuter girls... also... massive feet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4. I was really excited for the arrival of my asian skinned reiko. she looked like everything i could want for an akemi. i loved the production pic , but when she arrived she was very ugly and a much brighter shade then expected.I was so disgusted i packed it away and still have yet to paint it.But i purchased a small kimono for her from ebay and it really breathed new life into her.now i cant wait to paint her.
i found the same thing happened with my first doll i bought a feilian and ended up buying an alternate head. the mo head was perfect for what i needed. so i made a great female mo.
i was also not happy with my yi head. mainly because it was made for a bigger msd dollzone body. so now i need a 50cm body i think. it looks like a bobble head on a 43cm. i mean its a great sculpt and i painted it well.but im still not sure if i need an older body or a 50cm body.

5. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?

I was really mad when one of my doll heads came defective, but the company is trying to resolve the issue with me now (thankfully). I don't want to let this experience sour my feelings about the company, nor the dealer, nor the sculpt itself. I'm just wishing that things will work out amicably. :)

I've been disappointed or just felt that the doll wasn't working for my intended characters a few times. There have also been times when I felt the doll wasn't meshing well with my other dolls (regardless of how lovely the sculpt was). I sold a Bleu Citron head and Glorydoll Miyuki head because they were lovely, but didn't work for my characters. I also sold a Limhwa Half-elf because I couldn't get her to work for me (absolutely gorgeous face and body, but her posing left something to be desired). I sold my first male doll, a Delf El because his look is no longer in line with my changed aesthetic tastes. And lastly, I have just sold the two Soom Io heads that I bought last year in a set. Great sculpts, but I fell in love with another sculpt that really works for my character.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No, I didn't. I thought they might grow on me or that I might change my mind, but it just wasn't happening. I kept some of them anywhere from as long as 5 years to as little as 2 months.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I changed some of their looks several times in terms of faceups, clothing, wigs, eyes, etc. When nothing clicks, it's just not meant to be, so I sold them.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I don't feel bad. I gave it a good try and serious effort with them, but they went to better homes (to good people). :)

6. My experience was completely different.

I opened my doll's box and said "She's so beautiful!" Then as I was looking at her, I realized that she was the wrong doll! Fairyland had sent me a Darjeeling instead of a Pipi. The worst part was that Darjeeling is among my least favorite Pukis based on the company photos. But for some reason my girl looks completely different than the others, almost as if they had a different person do her face-up.

I was really afraid that I wouldn't like my dolls when they came though. I ordered during an event and it took quite a long time for them to get to me. But I'm happy with all of them, I just need to get them the right eyes and wigs.

7. My first doll i ever got was AOD liu yin. the three month wait made me kinda detach myself from her. and when i got her she was porly wrapped. i took out her pillow and her head cap fell to the ground. i thought she had the worse scuplt i've seen.that made me hate her alot. I still did till a week ago... i got her in september. But now i do love her!

8. I did have such an experience with a doll a few months back. When I opened the box, I was very surprised by the resin color and face-up, both of which looked very different than the website photos. I felt so crushed because I'd been so excited, but after a bit of a touch-up on the face-up, finding the right eyes, wig, and making a costume, I fell in love with him and now he's my favorite doll!

9. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight? Yes. I ordered a Bobobie Espree from Denver Doll and I just... yes, I kind of hated it. She was nothing like I had expected or wanted, and nothing like the doll I already had. It was worse because she was the first doll I had purchased... and to make matters worse, they'd sent me the wrong bust (small bust instead of large, which I had ordered)!

Did you opinion change after a few minutes? No, not at all. :\

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect). I emailed and then called Denver Doll to arrange a return. Since she had the wrong bust, they were willing and able to give me a refund on the doll as well as her shipping costs. I'll admit that I cried while dealing with it, though. I immediately boxed her up, and sent her back the next morning.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain. I felt bad about it then. I was miserable and thought there was something wrong with me for not liking her! I cried as I boxed her back up, and apologized to the doll for not appreciating her. I worried that my current doll was the only one who would ever be "right" to me. Thankfully, my best friend was able to assure me that he was not, and that not all dolls were like the one I had returned. I ended up ordering an AoD Chun Ze instead, and I love her to little resin pieces. <3 So... I don't really feel bad about it anymore. I feel like I let that Espree go on to belong to and go home with someone who would really appreciate her, and wouldn't only keep her out of some twisted feeling of obligation. And I love the doll that I got "instead" so much that I honestly can't imagine having any other doll for that character.

10. I was going through a lot the day my Hana(Dollmore Hwi ki) came to me. I was going to see Phantom of the Opera that night with my fiancee, and my engagement ring had gone missing, on TOP OF the tickets to see the show, so I was ransacking the house when the mail lady came with my box. When I did open the box, I was sort of partial to her--she was nice, but I was so stressed that I didn't really take the time to appreciate how beautiful she really was/is. It wasn't until the next day when I was able to admire her, and it's been love ever since. That's the closest to hating one of my dolls I've ever come.

11. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
There was a head that I once got for free as an extra head that I didnt care for too much so I just resold it but I didnt *hate it*

Did you opinion change after a few minutes? N/A

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect). I gave it a few weeks then I had it sent out for a face up which made it better but the head and I still didint conect lol...so then I sold it

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Not really , in this hobby you are not always going to love it when you get it. I see a lot of dolls from company pictures that are beautiful but when I see them in real life they are dissapointing to me.

12. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
No, though I've had a few seconds of being underwhelmed. Lying on their backs staring at the ceiling is often not the most flattering angle for them anyways!

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
With pretty much all of them, I have a weird process of being totally in love with them, then having a day or two of feeling weird about them, like they're a disappointment or I don't like them. Then I'm in love again :sweat To be honest, that's not unlike my process of getting used to a new puppy or kitten. I guess I need to make the transition from liking the idea of them to liking THEM.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
The more I can get them close to their characters, the better. I often do a wig try-on session just for fun, and that keeps me happy and interested while I get used to them.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Not really, though for my first couple of dolls my own reaction worried me a bit - an omg-did-I-make-a-mistake thing. It was always short-lived. Now I just know my process, and also how much can be improved on a doll anyways.

13. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Well, not really hated, but I wasn't happy with her at all after she arrived. I ordered a gray-skinned Impl Christoper from DDE because I loved the faceup and ears, but after she arrived...um, not so much. I had gotten completely spoiled by Fairyland by that point, and I just didn't like her body shape, resin color, or joints when compared to FL. She was a gorgeous doll, but just not for me at all.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Nope.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I packaged her back up and posted her on the MP the next day. She remained ready to ship until she sold to someone who appreciated her so much more then I could.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No because another person got to have a wonderful doll that I knew I would never bond with. I feel bad that I purchased her spontaneously instead of thinking it through, but it was a learning experience for me at least.

14. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
for me, it's kind of the opposite. i was IN LOVE with the blank sculpt (d.lishe) when i opened it but after i did the face up, he didn't look ...so ideal anymore. of course, this was really my fault for buying semigloss msc, instead of msc flat. :/

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
nope, still love his sculpt after the few minutes. only when the faceup went on...then did i started to dislike him.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
as i said, the faceup was bad, so i redid it. hair changed too. eyes did, eventually. only on his 4th faceup did i start to see him as really really ideal as the character. hmm, and though i do find some faults with his sculpt now and then, i've come to accept them and ...well, just ignore them for the better stuff, like the awesome lishe lips.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
well, yes, to some extent, and he's my first doll. though i'll never sell him, there were periods of time when i couldn't really stand looking at him, not because he's not nicely sculpted, but because he just seemed like an empty shell. but i've bonded with him, and now, well, there isn't really a need to feel bad since i've bonded to him, no? ;)

15. With both box openings, I had a feeling of "oh my god I can't believe I spent <cost of doll> on this..thing" with the first look of them under the wrappings.
I even got the same feeling getting my Euclase/RS hybrid second hand, even though I'd seen her in person before. Opeing the carrier she came in for the first time the same feeling appeared.

Sofar, Its always gone once I dresses them, got a chace to look and see what they are like properly. I think its the point where they go in my eyes from being a 'thing that I spent alot of money on' to 'my doll'.

Agree with this on the first page of this thread. The way we buy alot of our dolls is a bit hard as we are all mostly only ever seeing 2D images of them; the realitly can be diffrent when we see them for the first time.

16. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I didn't hate her persay, but for my first doll, I was terrified that I'd open the box and hate her. After ordering her, I heard such stories about misleading photos from companies and basically spooked myself. When I opened her up, there was a great deal of fear, followed by the slight apathy of seeing her ( to me) relatively unimpressive body (first thought was 'must sand these nipples'), but once I saw her face sculpt and face-up, all of it was forgotten. Soon after, I compared her to the company photos again, and her company photo is actually very unflattering when compared to her in real life.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
After actually seeing her face, yes. I immediately changed her eyes because the ones she came with were too dark, but she's lovely and I honestly can't imagine selling her.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
N/A

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.

I actually feel bad for being so nervous about opening her. I also felt a little bad for doubting the company I got her from, as they were extremely helpful despite the problems I had with ordering her.

17. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
yes , I hated my bluefairy jasmine when i saw her...

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
no it didn`t, only after like 2 hours...

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
she has now grew on me, but i`m still going to change her wig and face up wich i hate..

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
no, because i like her now , just not her wig and face up that don`t mach with her charter, and for now I just have to bare whit it cuz I`m saving up for a 3rd doll and all my money is for that at the moment...

*please excuse my bad english

18. It sort of happened to me with my Apollo, I didn't hate him when I opened him but I did have a bit of a twinge of 'oh it's not quite what I was hoping for' with his face, but after having played with his outfit and look for a bit I was actually really happy with him, and now I wouldn't change him for anything. =D

19. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight? Yes. I opened a preowned dollzone Yuu. I'd had a bad transaction with him and it had taken the seller ages to get him to me. WHen he arrives he was yellowed, scratched, his face up was smudged and his mods were naaasty. I cried as i'd paid the full price of a new DZ Yuu...AND i hate seeing dolls in that condition...cause i love mine so much.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes? no lol.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
It took me about half an hour to adjust to the idea I was going to have to do a big job onhim. I removed his face up, sanded his scratches away and removed the apoxie mods. After that I apoxied his eyelids back on as they had been modded off and apoxied his stitch scars on his mouth...then gave him a new face up.
He's still waiting to have a light sanding all over to remove his yellowing...but I love the boy to bits now. Hes got nice new clothes and an awesome character. Even a doll family of his own LOL.

All the hassle was worth it as hes very popular amongst my friends and my boyfriend is always hugging him

20. pendrithgirl- Oh my. That sounds awful! I'm happy to hear you restored him to a good condition though! Did this transaction happen through DoA? >.> I hope some justice was served there.
*Dollzone love ♥*
