Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
'Hate' is a strong word, but, sadly there are only 3 dolls I ever got that I truly 'loved' right out of the box.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      No, unfortunately.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Yeah, I played around with the clothes and wigs and stuff. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I feel disapointed that I didn't like the doll in life as much as I liked it in the photos online.

    2. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I did not hate the one I received but I also did not love or even feel at all about her.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      Not at all.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I decided to make a gift of her to a friend that is very much into a certain style. I dressed the doll in that style and repackaged her as a gift.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I wish I had fallen in instant love with that girl as I did when I first saw her image but I am happy that she is going somewhere where she will be loved, cherished, and spoiled.

    3. Yes, it happened to me once, but it didn't matter that much since I bought him just for his body ^^U (A SSDF Regen). So it didn't matter if I hated the head or not. I still cannot bond with the floating head, but it's not as bad as the first time I saw him I guess. I think I just need to find the right wig and eyes for him (I won't even mention how many times I changed his face-up). I was tempted to sell him, I even gave him as a gift to someone in the US but since she never claimed the package or anything he was sent back to me! X_x
So I thought "what the heck" and kept him, who knows, maybe he was meant to be here? ^^U

    4. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes actually my very first doll I ordered was a DZ X from Denver Doll and I had specially asked to have the X-2 version of that doll so not the french aristoractic look at all but a more gothic/punk style. Needless to say I was freaking out about when I opened the box and hsi face looked like it had like some kind of allergy hives or rosacia or something like that on it it was horrible. And to top it off I was allergic to the wig it arrived with as it came with the red fluffy one in the picture of the french version.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No it didn't change in fact it got worse the more I looked at it I was actually panicking because he just didn't look right.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
So my good friend Acanthiel from DOA was very sweet and took him for liek a month and my friend serpentsong both too him and made him clothes that were more like his character and Acanthiel redid his face, bought him a wig gave him teh red eyes he was supposed to have as she extra set we ordered him some boots and whola he was perfect oh and she piereced his ears.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I don't feel bad about it at all as I loved the sculpt and in the end it helped to make the doll more mine than the factory anyway and let him grow as a character besides its kinda neat story

    5. It seems most of these problems are with DZ O___O

    6. Hahaha yeah it's something about them you have to grow accostumed to. ^^; I'm pretty suprised to see I wasn't the only one. I love him now though, and that's all that matters! ♥

    7. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I did not hate her, but I didn't love her right away. She was my first BJD Tiny and I didn't realize how small she would actually be.
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No. It took a few months. Once I started a dollhouse for her and adopted a few more tinies of similar size it all kind of clicked.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I do feel bad about it now, but being my first led to adopting a whole family of tinies and I can't imagine her being any other way.

    8. I've bought several dolls, and was totally thrilled with all of them except for Soom Uyoo. It seemed like her face was too large for the size of her head, or something. Or perhaps her scalp was too small relative to the face. It's not apparent in photos, but it's apparent in person. It bugged me. With her wig on, her head looked a little bigger so it wasn't noticeable, but it still bugged me. I took some pictures of her, and she looked fantastic in the pictures, so that made me like her better. I sold her anyway.

    9. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
When I ordered an old-style Hound body (right before Dollshe stopped selling them) I expected something else entirely. When I opened the box, I was horrified at how ungainly and ugly the Hound body was, and how it would need a lot of work to even be functional enough to stand up.

When I opened the box for my DIM Marianne I cried - I was expecting a little girl and had ended up with a mature mini. Her knees were very badly designed and she couldn't' stand normally.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Not one bit with the Hound. I made sure to show people how terrible it was. Because I was quite in love with my Marianne's head, my problem was only really with her body. It was a love/hate relationship.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I sold the Hound body was was happy to get rid of it. I also sold the Marianne body and got her a Volks MSD body and I was more than pleased with my results.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I don't feel bad at all.. I still don't care for Hounds - they have pretty faces but their bodies annoy me to no end.

    10. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I can't say I hated my first doll. I actually liked him but as the month went by, I started to have serious doubts about him, all because his face up was very different from the company promo pictures.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No as I didn't hate him and it took at least 2-3 weeks before the doubts starting showing up.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I pried off his eyelashes and wow, was that a change. I've actually never been happier now. He looks less girly than he did and sometimes, he really does look like a little like the promo picture. I haven't as yet changed his face up but one day I will give him a much more dramatic and bolder look, less innocent.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Not really. I think it was a learning process as it was my first doll. I just put it down to growing pains. With a change of wigs, eyes and clothing, he can look older or younger, so that's fine for me.

    11. I FELT THE EXACT SAME WAY!!! I paid him off early and everything! I wasn't too impressed with Dollzone's face ups. :( He actually hasn't left the box in 6 months. I hate looking at him. :( I got 2 Dollzones and I hate both of them but I feel so guilty selling them because they are brand new in their boxes.

    12. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight? I really hated my first male doll. He wore a short blond wig and had golden eyes that I had ordered for him, and somehow he looked pasty. I had a long black wig and red eyes laying around and used them. He came alive and now I love him. He just wasn't meant to be a golden boy.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain. Not at all. I just needed to give the doll a chance and I wasn't too smart when ordering the right colour of wig and eyes for him.

    13. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Not really hate but I didn't like my WS BBB Apollo when I first opened him. He was my first WS doll and he was so white it was kind of shocking. He is very floppy and his face up is very blah too.
He didn't look like the beautiful owner pics I was looking at.
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      Not really.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I finally found a wig and outfit that I like so I have started to bond with him. I could not sell him because my little girl just fell in love and named him Edward..lol. I think with a new face up (and something done so he could at least stand) I will love him.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No...since it is all OK now!

    14. I didn't exactly hate my doll when she arrived but I knew there was something I didn't like about her. I didn't do anything about her and she slept in her box like a coffin for many months. I don't feel bad at all because I realized how misleading the official photos were.

On another note, I still remember I was such a huge fan of Dollzone Hid way back when I first got into this hobby. Now, when I look back, I find him very unattractive. The same thing goes for Souldoll Mrybeyol.

    15. Raddish Spirit! ♥

    16. I thought I posted a reply to this already, but I guess not. Anyway... here goes.

Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?

Hate? No. I have been extremely disappointed and conflicted... so much so it gave me knots in my stomach.

Did your opinion change after a few minutes?

No. Unfortunately the more I tried to "force" her into my crew the worse I felt.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).

I put her up for sale. She was a beautiful doll, and on an individual level I loved her... but she looked so different compared to the dolls she was intended to go with.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.

Not at all. Since then I found a sculpt more fitting of the character said doll was originally intended to represent. I am much happier now and know that I did the right thing.

    17. It never happened to me yet and I sure hope it never does!!

If it did happen I would feel really bad though.
I try to research a lot before buying anything and if I end up not liking it at first glance then I would have done a really bad job xP

    18. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I have a doll, a doll I requested as a Christmas present, received, and then upon opening had massive doubts. Unfortunately my dislike for this doll has GROWN a lot, especially when I coukdn't sell her, and then even MORE when I reface-upped her and discovered an air bubble in the lower eyelid, and couldn't get her head back on. So my hate has increased and I'm stuck with her! I probably couldn't give this doll away!

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      Yes, it got worse.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
She wears another wig- other than her default, and other clothes as well, but right now she is naked on a shelf. I took all her defaults away for other dolls.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I feel bad that I wasted my family's money on a present, I feel bad I wasted my annual X-mas doll wish, and I feel bad because I can't sekl her and get a doll I like. I am cursed to own this doll and must make the best of it. She has a new and interesting face-up but I still hate her...

    19. "Hate" is a bit too strong, but I have definitely been disappointed. I ordered a doll that I thought I would really like, anticipated her for a few months, and then as soon as I opened the box it was all gone. I knew I didn't care much for her. My opinion didn't change. I don't really feel bad about it, but I wish I had trusted my instinct. I had my doubts about the doll before I even opened her. There was nothing wrong with the doll, either--just not right for me.

    20. My first two dolls were Domuyas. I ordered them before I knew I had any choice in BJDs. They were both so different from their promo pics my heart fell. I had spent a fortune and I felt the worst kind of disappointment. I gave the female away to a friend I knew I probably wouldn't see again when she moved to her home country on the other side of the world.

The funny thing is the boy doll, Zen, who I have used for faceup practice, has grown on me. I took some nice photos of him when I first got him, and he was my first BJD, so there is some affection there now. Now after I have some dolls that I love.
