Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. I have hated about 50% of the dolls I have bought when I first opened them. I have since sold all of them. If I don't love the doll the first time I see them I know I will not end up keeping them so I sell them as fast as possible.
      :sweat

    2. I haven't, I spent about 2 months picking out my dolly and I knew that I would love her. I always pick dolls SUPER carefully just in case I won't love them to death!

    3. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes , last year I opened a doll box and was dissapointed by her, I hated her .

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      No, could not change .

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I sold her to my friend cheaper than her price.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
No, it was my wrong because I choosed her by myself but not like I thought.

    4. I have never opened a doll myself, but I spend a long time picking and choosing how and what they're going to look like, and I spend days agonizing over my choice until I'm sure I will like them. So I'm hoping this doesn't happen with me. ; A ;

    5. Don't worry Liarino- most people don't experience this. A lot of people that have hate for a doll at first site grow to love the doll over time. ^^ I don't think you should have a problem unless you settle for a doll that you don't want as much as another. If you don't get the one you're dying for, then anything less may serve as some kind of disappointment. The right eyes, wig, faceup, and outfit also play a part in whether or not you love the doll at first. It takes time to make the doll your own and exactly what you're looking for! :D

    6. It's threads like this that make me really happy I've always based the character on the doll, not tried to find a doll to fit the character. It must be awful to open the box and immediately be unhappy with your new baby because s/he doesn't look enough like the image you have in your head. *is sad for disappointed people*
That said, though, I still can't get to like my Mini Gem Uyoo; there's just something about the facial sculpt and the set of the eyes that bothers me. I'm happy there are teeny Sooms I can afford, but i still may not end up keeping her

    7. I don't have my doll yet, but I think I would be crushed if I opened the box and hated it. I've been in want of a specific doll for close to 6 months now and because of my lack of revenue currently I probably won't be able to get it any time soon. Plus there are the few months it takes to have a doll shipped. So to wait that long plus the money being spent I would be tremendously deflated if there was any feeling less than absolute love. (Then I would probably be riddled with guilt over hating the poor little thing.) :P

    8. I got a chiwoo head from the market place, he had a stange face up, He had yellow across his face. (I hate yellow). But once I got it, I thought it looked better. Once his eyes were in he was even better! And then when we got his head on and wig on he looked just so perfect!

(The person had taken good photos.)

    9. Hopefully, I've never hated a doll at the opening box. Only a few disappointed. But a few is already too much. I know sadly these dolls will finish on the market. I need heartbeat at the opening.

    10. This is what I am afraid of for my first BJD!! Like someone said, I guess more and more research! But a lot of the time the picture does not add up to what you get I suppose?

    11. I hated my third doll, and after almost a year of lusting after my DOD Ducan I was absolutely devastated. His nose was so pointed, and he just came across as very homely and had a deadness to his eyes.
But, then i swapped his brown eyes with blue- and for some reason he just seemed more animated, now he's one of my favs :)
It's strange what a new pair of eyes will do!

    12. I loved my BBB Feng upon first sight... but now I kind of hate him. I think it might just be the fact that he's strung so loosely, I can't pose him at all. When I restring him and reshape one of his hands (and buy him a wig!) I think I'll love him...
But I haven't hated any of my dolls at first sight. (Or maybe I was forcing the love with my Feng? I dunno.)

    13. You're all scaring me into thinking that I could have a bad experience with my first doll-opening. Dx

    14. I know, this thread scared me too. ^^;;;;;; But I think if you do enough research you should be fine. When I opened my doll she was exactly what I expected because I had looked at so many pictures.

It's important to find ones with different lighting so you can see the shadows cast by the more subtle contours. Like the brow ridge and cheeks and stuff.

And I think if you get a doll with a faceup and everything, there's a chance it may not look the same as you'd expect. D: But I believe that if you see the potential for a certain look in a sculpt when you're looking at photos, there WILL be a way to bring that out in your own doll, even if it doesn't look right when it first arrives.

    15. I agree with you, Tygati

    16. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes and no. I couldn't stand the look of my second doll - before I bought it. See, I bought it planning to mod it, knowing I'd hate it if I left it the way it was and also knowing that I'd love the modded version.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Nope. It changed after a few days, when I finished the facial mods and seam sanding.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Nope. I was fully prepared for the, "I don't like this at all," feeling, and I was also totally sure that it would go away. I'm sure it seems crazy to other people, to buy a doll you know you won't be able to stand upon first sight, but... it worked for me.

    17. I've never hated a doll, but I have hated a faceup. When my DIM Achernar arrived I was expecting something a lot different from what I got. I was pretty depressed over it for a while, but it really has grown on me now :'3

    18. I didn't have the initial - "OMG! He's so ugly!" Reaction, but when I got my DoD Ducan in, I was - and still am - displeased with the size of his ears! lol I finally got the right wig for him, but unless it's made of longer hair, I just hate the way they stick out. ><* I still love him to pieces though! And I think he'd be really upset with me if he knew I was talking about him like this. lol

    19. Yes, I've had this happen with me (unfortunately it was with a doll someone bought FOR me :() It was a DZ Hid. I was terribly excited to get him, but when I opened up the box he came with the new type body (WHICH I HATE) was terribly skinny and squeaky and didn't fit the character I had in mind. It was heart break as soon as I saw his face and had to put him back in his box. Later I attempted to try and see if he'd work. He photographed really well, but I just couldn't do it, there wasn't that love there that I get with my other dolls, so after a week he was back up for sale and is now at a new home with someone who will love him :)

    20. Lixxie, I know the feeling. It was the same with my Mei. I love her o death, don't get me wrong. But at one point I was thinking of buying her an american girl wheelchair and just saying "she's not supposed to stand, shes a cripple!!" >.<

Lolly, just remember, no matter how in love you fall for a doll, find owner pics and ask a TON of questions. Doll owners are normally very happy to answer any questions, weather its on here, deviantart, or wherever. That actually saved me. I almost bought a AoD Wang-Zi from this girl at a con. He had a custom faceup, and I didn't have the $200 that she wanted for him. I later found the same doll, with the same faceup on DA (it was pictures the previous owner had taken) I talked to her about him and found out that he had SO much wrong with him that the other girl didn't tell me. TThe previous owner told me that the price she was selling was the same for a new Wang-Zi, and that her doll was not worth that price. Later I decided that he was not as pretty without the custom faceup, and gave up on wanting him alltogether.

Alogue, Thats no good, considering I'm about to get a DZ Luke... I wonder if they sell the old bodies at all...?
