Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
No hate, but I felt let down when I opened my B&G Eli-Imp :c

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Oh yeah. Even though I had checked the Soom site and B&G site for measurements (He's rivals with my Bygg, so I wanted to make sure they were the same height or that my Eli-Imp was shorter) he was bigger in height and body. That really got to me, but I decided to go with it. And he's too cute to be cross at ;] Not his fault.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
      |D" Y-Yeah~ My own interpretation of the sculpt overtook how I should have truly felt about him one-on-one when he arrived. He's a sweet-looking mold and I'm glad to have him <3

    2. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes! The first doll I ever bought, I nabbed him on ebay from Angel Fantasy.... a few hundred dollars/weeks later He was here! My doll! I was ecstatic when I saw his face I was a bit upset, (I didn't get him with a face up) the random wig he came with was a girls wig so he looked ridiculous in it! But after his face-up he grew on me and i could finally see how beautiful he really was...
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
      Yes :3
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Yes, now I try to let the doll grow on me more, I haven't had another incident like that yet, (though I only have one other doll who is absolutely GORGEOUS, (emma from 5stardoll) I'm so paranoid about her face-up (i got it done out) getting messed up I keep a face cover on her all the time >.>

    3. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
My KizDoll Vince came in two parts. When I opened his body, I was kind of disappointed. I knew he wasn't going to be double jointed (by the pictures on the website), but his left arm has trouble staying down. When I try to put it down it goes back up: Making posing VERY difficult. When his head came in (I bought it blank) I was very disapointed. The way they sculpted it looked very rushed. The side of his face still has line marks from when they were smoothing it, and his nose looked chipped.
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Not necessarily, after I did his faceup he looked a little better. I still feel the same towards his body though. I may get him a new one later on down the road.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not?
I do somewhat feel bad about it. He really is a good looking doll once you fix 'em right. <3 I may redo his faceup again once I get some shine pearl.

    4. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I wouldn't say I hated, but I was definitely disappointed when my limho mono arrived :(
He was shorter and thinner than I expected and didn't work with my minifees at all.. at least not what I was going for.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No, I boxed him up right away and instantly put him up for sale. While I still thought he was a gorgeous doll, he didn't work for what I had in mind.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I traded him for the MNF Rheia I'd been drooling over for months and got Sarin his girlfriend XD

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Not at all, in the end it all worked out well for me. The person I traded him too hopefully enjoyed him. He was a gorgeous doll and I'm happy knowing that it wasn't flaws within the doll, just that he wasn't the style that worked with my current crew. I'm sure someone has him and loves him :)

    5. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yes (admittedly not a resin though, it was pricy)
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Kind of, i learned to cope with the flaws. it was stained and very floppy (there is a problem with the hip peice and it pops out of the hip so the abdominal framing is loose inside the doll), even after weeks of trying the problem has never really corrected.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
      -/-
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I don't feel bad about it, i don't really have a reason to. I am alot closer with the doll now then i was initially, it just took a few months to get over the disappointment when i had been so excited over it.

    6. Yes when i got my dollzone Reiko!!! i waited 3 months for her and paid the extra money for a face-up, even-though i do usually do them myself. and when i took off the face guard i was shocked! the only similarity between the pics on dollzone and my doll was the mole under her lip! the eye-shadow was a different color the brows were dark brown, and the lips were the WORST! just a line of light pink down the center of the bottom lip and that was it!!!! the dollzone pics her lips were a juicy red and her lids had a light pink shimmer.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
maybe after a hour i was willing to look at her. and after a few changes i loved her.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
i hated the face up dollzone did and i will NEVER spend an extra $50 on their face-ups! the thing is it wasn't the quality that was bad but the face that it was just so drastically different from what i was expecting. i ended up darkening her lips to how they look in the pics on the dollzone page.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
no and yes. i am mad because i really LOVED the doll in the pics on dollzone but that is not what i got. i felt better after i darkened the lips and added a little extra gloss to her lids then i loved her (thank god!) but i still dont like her eyebrows! they are verging on unibrow! so i just keep a wig on her that has bangs and that is fine.

    7. I have had this happened when I first brought Ai home. She is a limited Iplehouse sword dancer I that I spontaneously purchased, with encouragement from my mate. After the wait we finally got a notice that she was shipped and we patiently awaited for her to come. We had to pick her up from the post office. Now I had ordered her without the face-up (which at the time I didn't think I could afford) and no outfit because I definitely knew I couldn't afford that. All this I had kept in mind but for some reason when I opened her box I was hoping to get something like what I saw in the pictures of her on the website, which is ridiculous on my part.

Unfortunately that stupid hope of mine had gotten in the way of me bonding with her- I kept saying I should have ordered her with the makeup and never spent lots of time with her. She just sat on my shelf with her mask on. She never took good pictures then... they were always blurry and she didn't like to pose. Until recently that is. She was faceless for a year until I recently worked up the balls to do her faceup myself, basing it off of the offical pics of her, and we're more close now and I like her a lot more. She even looks a bit happier now- despite the mistake with her eyelashes I had gotten for her and her 'scar' from where faceup had gotten scratched a bit while I was trying to stick the blasted things on and ultimately failing to do so (ruining one side out of the pair of eyelashes in the process rendering them unuseable) .

She still doesn't care for picture taking but I can at least get a few good shots of her now whereas a year ago they'd all be blurry regardless of what I'd do. But overall I love her more now and I feel bad that I didn't feel a connection with her at all when I got her. She even has more of a personality now, she still frequently wears her mask but that's her "character" now and she's beautiful underneath it too, the mask no longer being used to hide her faceless image that I was once ashamed of.

    8. I am afraid this will happen with my Rena .. only in my case it will be terrible because my friends are getting her for me because they also have dolls and know how it is to long for one ... I've decided on a wig and eyes and a dress ... but I am so scared to see it all together. but at the same time I know she will be lovely.. Have you seen Rena's face? theres no way it cant be pretty even without the faceup I love her

    9. No, not yet! <<knocks wood>> So far, my gut (who does the shopping) & my heart (who does the bonding) have ended up in total agreement.... 30 times out of 30. :aheartbea

Only once did I receive a faceup that didn't look exactly like the sales-photo, but it didn't cause me to hate the doll. I still loved the doll, the sculpt, the body, the fullset, the quality, everything; it was just that his expression made him look so sad it made me sad. He seemed so mournful that I didn't want to ever let go of him, and during the day I really need to go to work (and my job requires both hands). ^^;; So I had his eyebrows fixed, and now he looks much more content to be here, and I am still in love with him.

    10. Yes I hated hated HATED my girl, well at first I was just at you just waiting and waiting and waiting and when I finally got her I was so happy but was disappointed when I saw her face. Nothing was special about her...and she looked so generic. I thought about selling her for the longest time but then I finally bought the i wanted for her and now shes good. I can not say she is a dream doll or the cutest doll in any way but I am satisfied :) I feel like once i find a style for her everything will get even better! At the moment I am lost in what to dress her in and do not feel like taking any chances just because well you know V~V money.

    11. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I had the whole waiting thing with my Naoto, and had gone back and forth with which sculpt to go with but finally decided. While waiting I doubted myself. When he came in an I opened him I was slightly disappointed.
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
My disappointment only lasted a little while. I quickly changed his eye's and put his wig on and he became Naoto instantly! The faceup wasn't like the website pictures and it fit him perfectly.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I only feel a little bad but the only reason I was disappointed was because he didn't look like him until I put him together lol

    12. Yes! I bought a doll once without seeing owners pics because there were none. When she arrive I didn't like her and I tried to give her a chance but it didn't work out between us so she had to be re-homed! I'm glad she went to place were she was more loved! =)

    13. I truly hope I don't have that kind of experience. When I find a mold or specific doll I like I research like crazy on how it looks with default faceups in real life...in other clothes etc...to see every scenario so I can see the nose shape, body shape, leg shape etc that doll companies sometimes don't show ya know? But it looks like sometimes faceups go horribly wrong, I hear that AOD's faceups have been super weird lately bright bright colors and such. Some people may like that but I sure wouldn't!!!

    14. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight? Yes. My first doll. I didn't know about DoA or owner pictures yet, so I only saw the promo pictures. When I opened the box and uncovered her, I actually had to carry her over to my computer and look at the company pictures again to be sure I had the right doll. The problem was, they took the pictures somewhat above her, and she was peeking up at the camera. The pictures didn't really show her open mouth, or her teeth. Looking at her face straight on, she looks like she has a severe anxiety problem, and is ready to bite you. The faceup on her was nearly the same color as the resin; It looked pale and featureless. To make it worse, her body was very stiff and unwieldy, and squeaked.
Did your opinion change after a few minutes? No. In fact it got worse. The only reason I kept her was because I paid so much for her and she was my first doll. I really tried to like her, but she was just not for me.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect). I tried several different wigs on her, and many different eyes. None of these changed her general look; there was always this awful, pinched looking face staring out at you. I'm not enough of an artist to do my own faceups, and I really didn't want to put that much more money into her when I really didn't like the sculpt itself. After a year, when I liked her even less, I finally got a different head for the body. That's when I realized how much I hated this poor doll, because even though the new head was out of proportion, I liked it a lot better. She's still a bear to pose, and squeaks like a rusty wheel, but at least I like her face.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain. I do, because she was my first doll and I absolutely hated her. I use her original head now as a practice head, as I'm trying to learn to do faceups. The one bright spot in all this was I found out about DoA, and I always checked owner pics after that.

    15. Luckily this has never happened to me... which is surprising because i bought my first two dolls after instantly falling in love with them, and buying them just weeks after seeing any BJD for the first time... i have 4 dolls now, and i love them all! Never disliked any of them...

But that could be because each one of them i absolutely fell in love with the moment i saw them...

oh, and the owner reference pics on here are probably the greatest resource for doll shopping EVER... It is one of the top reasons i love DoA! I didn't know they existed till being part of DoA for quite some time.

P.S. And to all those who HAVE opened up their dolls and hated them, i don't think you should feel bad about it. They aren't always what you expect, and you can't so easily CHOOSE what you like, or dislike... We can't change our favorite color, ^_^* so while i know how it feels, (heart breaking, lol) i don't think one should feel too bad about simply being misinformed, or not 100% aware of how the doll you were getting would look... just my two cents!

      ^_^

    16. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I made an impulse purchase off of ebay. I felt sorry for this poor unloved doll. When it arrived, I absolutely hated it!!!! I could not believe I was the one to rescue this doll.
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
My opinion of said doll only got worse with time.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I desperately tried to bond with the pitied party. I did countless faceups on it. I purchased all kinds of wigs, and eyes. I did some mods to it. In the end, I re-homed the unloved resin personality.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain
I am elated by my decision!!! Not only is the doll in a new and very loving home, that completely adores it, but the purchase provided for a doll I had been longing for - whom I always and instantly adroed. I think all worked out well in the end, but the road was long and hard!!

    17. When I first opened my LeLe, I hated him. But he had no face up, so I didn't judge him. I did one myself and I still wasn't pleased with him... but AoD doesn't have very good molds for Tinys. So I eventually modded him.

However when I opened my BBB Rachel (who I got second hand) I had that feeling as well. But when I put on her hair and eyes and face up, I fell in love with her and now she's my favorite doll to photograph.

    18. Sort of? With my first two dolls I was immediately happy. Max, my third and also second puki, it was a bit of the opposite. I'm unwrapping him, and take off the little face paper and my first thought was "WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON WITH THOSE EYEBROWS?!" I had received Bella from them about a year previously and I love her eyebrows. His just make that little pouty face look so angry! I unpacked his clothes, got him dressed and put his wig on him and the second his bangs covered his eyebrows all was right in the world.

However, over the two and a half years I've had my MSD Natalie, I have grown to HATE her body. It is a great shape and I love the curvature of her body, but the single joint system when trying to pose her in comparison to the amazing double joints of a puki? That body seriously needs to be replaced. Most likely with a minifee one. Of course her new body is taking a backseat to her boyfriend and the twin of the incoming littlefee. Who are fighting about who gets to come first...

    19. i do quite a bit of searching before i decide to buy a doll. i look around on dozens of sites, then i open tabs with my very favorites from each site, then go through to tabs, seeing which i like most. then i google up some pics of that type i want just to see it in some other settings, them when i get the money, i buy. lol ive never regretting any of my dolls for even a second

    20. The only thing hated about the dolls i had so far were the body. I'm SUPER carefull when it comes to choosing a head. I watch every pictures i can find to see how it looks in every angle possible. Buuuut i Often have problem with bodies :/ and just that is enough to make me sell the doll...
but i end up re-buying it, but with different body xD

ah, well i had a moon head. i LOVE moon, but for some reason, i didnt like mine :/ i dun get why
