Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. I don't like blythes. I bought my first doll, a leekeworld Florence, and did not read the 11cm wig size on the page. I assumed she was an MSD and bought her 7-8 wigs etc. You could imagine my face when she arrived in the mail and had a head over twice the size of my friend's msd's head.

Once I got the right wigs for her, her giant blythe head grew on me though.

Also, when I got my first crobiboy (my second doll) and saw him without his faceup/wigs, his face looked nothing like the pictures online and his chin was HUGE! With his faceup and hair he looks much different, and his crobidoll faceup looks prettier in real life. His chin is still huge though XD

I loved them in the end but bought another doll that I'm hoping is an OMG I LOVE YOU SO MUCH CUTIE right out of the box...

    2. I'm terrified of ordering my first doll. O_o It's a Bobobie Ni, and although I love both owner pics, store pics, and box-opening vids, I'm worried that I won't even end up liking her sculpt, that I'm only convincing myself that I like her because she's less expensive (Even though I know it's not true) worry worry, bitch moan cry, et cetera. ;^__^ Nevertheless, she has remained my first choice for some time now. :3

Besides, if I REALLY wanted something just because it was less expensive, I would get an obitsu. :3 Although they are more poseable... I HATE their head sculpts. D:<

    3. XD chances are if you liked her pictures you'll like her sculpt, the sculpt is actually always better then the photo...i can say that from experience when I opened that doll box revealing my boy....I'm happy with my first choice and cant wait to extend the family further

    4. I wish I wasn't but I've been very guilty of this. Especially with my last few purchases. :[

      I learned when I bought an IoS WS Mezz that I found it difficult to bond witha white skinned doll that looked green in certain shades of light. I opened him with such anticipation and when I saw him my heart sunk. ^^; I think he was the only doll purchase I've made where I couldnt stand having him around. I was looking for someone to sell him to minutes later. >_>;

The others were simply not what I expected.

I think the limitation of doll funds and the incredible variety of sculpts offered out there really have sort of spoiled me. I get to the point where I feel I have to pinpoint the "right one" so specifically. When they arrive theres almost no room to "come to love them" if its not love at first sight. ><

    5. No, not at first sight ;)
And If I hated the doll before I wouldn't buy it ;)

    6. When I opened up my newest addition, a Planetdoll Renee boy, I didnt hate him, per se, but I was disappointed cause one of my fears came true, his face-up was too girly. He was supposed to be this rude little prince, and a girly face-up just wouldnt cut it. I tried wigs&clothes on him and I still feel a sad little twinge when I looked at him.

But then! The next day, I ripped off his darned eye-lashes, and ta-dahh! Insta-love <33 Now I adore him more than anything :3

    7. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I'd say more disappointment. When I opened the box to me Soom Heliot..well, I was worried that I'd bought him as a Sard replacement and I was right! I bought him faceup-less and I realised how much I disliked his long pointy face, puffed up lips and papery whiteness. The only thing I liked about his face was his nose.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
There was a fascination with getting him to stand on his hooves but I still couldn't shake the disappointment, I wanted to change him pretty much straight away.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).

I never actually worked up the desire the get him painted and he stayed in his box, naked and unpainted for far too long. Eventually I sold his rem. head and then followed suit by sending the full doll to an owner who has since had him painted and his now with someone who loves him.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.

I do partly because it was a lot of money wasted. But also not because he eventually went to a good home and I used the money I got back from selling him to buy my dream doll.

    8. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?

      -Yes-_-.............................................Maybe I should add on another word,disappointment.
That was my 4th doll ,Mix...He's the only one I bought on impulse-_-;...The rest of my boys were on research based-_-..
I got so disappointed after opening D:

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
-Erm...I'm self hypnotizing right now lol.....In progress.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).

      Till now put on his wig and clothes but not the face up ^^;
but I still think he's not really my type yet, waiting for other clothes which I have ordered to arrive to give him a change.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
      Bad about buying on impulse?
D: this taught me a lesson of never rely on photoshop'd photos....
      -_-;

Well,he's still my boy so I will still try my best to love him...Although he's still in the box ever since the day he arrived.

    9. My goodness. I haven't, because I have no dolls yet, but if this happened to me, I'm not sure how I'd feel. D: I'd literally probably do the same thing you did. Irritated and sad at the look, and then the doll would probably grow on me.
I'm happy that you ended up loving him anyways. That's such a good thing. <3

    10. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Yeppers. My Resinsoul Mei. I had an AoD boy as my first, and his body is just amazing. I guess I was expecting something like him, since they were about the same amount of money (I wasn't very active on DoA at the time and didn't know much about resinsoul/bobobie). I picked up the Mei from her sleeping bag and she flopped. I was crushed :P
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Even re-strung, she was still floppy. I learned to deal with it, and I really, really loved her face... But finally it bugged me so much that after about 9 months I packed her up and sold her.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Sold the doll... sadly. >> If resinsoul ever majorly re-vamps everything but the face sculpt, though, I'll buy her again. Or maybe I'll buy a head and hybrid it or something in the future. I dunno.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Yes, because I loved her face. But she went to a good home, and I did learn some things. ^^

    11. The strongest negative reaction I had to a doll was when I received a Tender Lahoo head from DOD. But, DOD's photos are notorious for being inaccurate anyway, and there were no owner pics because it was an event head. I took him out of the box maybe twice before listing him up for sale.

And a little bit different, but similar.... I got a beyla head as a gift, and was really excited while I had her blank, but as soon as I got her painted up, I hated her. I tried again, and still hated her. I still like the mold, but I can't make it something I want to own.

    12. Ha ha, anyone who has ever opened a box that contains an unpainted face may be able to relate to this. My doll arrived, I wrestled my box into my room and carefully opened the outer box. I took out the inner box, lifted its lid, pulled the pillow off and.....

"Oh man. I better put a face-up on her before anyone sees her like this....."

    13. Lol Blue_wsysteria, that's exactly how I felt about my first doll. XD My friends saw it the next day, though, and they were all, "EYEBROWS. NOW. NOOOOW. D:<"

      Unfortunately, I was still waiting on my sealant, so my Luka remained faceless for a while longer. >_o;

    14. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
I was more disappointed when my Delf YDER arrived. He was unpainted and I had no access to any sealer so couldnt even try to give him one. So he sat in a box for a year while I distanced my self from the hobby.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Nope. I tried bonding. I took pictures. Different eyes. Different wigs. Nothing was working. I just really didnt like the sculpt. It may have been the blankness but it let me see the, in my opinion, flaws of the sculpt. (My mum used to say he had a Crack Nose.)

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I eventually got sick of having him around and decided to sell the head and try and later sell the body so I could get my dream doll a Delf IF. The head sat unsold for ages and no one seemed to be selling IF heads so yet again I distanced my self from the hobby further.
I then logged on to DoA one day to see two PMs in my inbox that had arrived that day. One person wanting to purchase the head. One offering me a default faceup'd IF head! The if head was costing the same amount the sleeping and open eyed Yder heads were selling for so it was costing me nothing!!
      It was fate!

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.

I dont feel bad at all! I couldnt be happier! My IF doll decided that it was a male so I didnt need to change the body and I'm now involved in the community again! Doll meets! Photographs! Huggling at my doll whenever I can!
      Even planning my next doll!!
It was the best thing that could have happened and if it hadn't I'd still have this doll I hated and actively regretted.

    15. @ oOnyao
That story is so sweet >.< I'm glad you finally got the doll you loved~

    16. I bought a BBB sprite on the MP on impulse. Although I had a tan one this one was NS and I opened the box and went OH! and not in a good way.

I sold her at once and never regretted it..I still have the tan one though.

    17. @ ChocolateTangerine:
Thank you! It was such a lucky story! All happening on one day and whatnot!
So am I! He's adored actually! XD

    18. When I opened my doll, an Iplehouse YID Mars, I didn't hate him.. but I was surprised at how skinny he was. He looked different because I ordered him with a face-up. But I quickly grew to love him. Now I think he's adorable!

    19. My first and only doll is Luts JDF terra with default faceup and when I first opened the box I thought they mailed the wrong doll to me ! LOL
Cuz his face up was soooo different from the official photo, and I ordered him fairly early so I didn't have the chance to see any open-box photos of him.
His face up makes him look very angry, the eyebrows comparing to the official photo is very much darker and more angled so that's almost all you can see when looking at him xD
I thought about giving him a new face up but after awhile I kinda got used to it, well his own personality kicked in and now I'm happy with him xD
I was never mad or hate him for that, I think face up is like make up, no matter what the face up looks like, his sculpt never changes. And I just LOVE his sculpt. xD~

    20. I can't say I've really "hated" an entire doll I've received entirely ... hate's a bit of a strong word here... but not been completely comfortable with might be a better explanation.
I ordered a blue Resinsoul Ai that I received at the start of the year whilst studying / not having the money to buy more expensive dolls at the time. I just couldn't like her hooved legs - they just seemed so very awkward and, although I tried too make myself like them and her and thought about replacing them for the Resinsoul human legs, this was about the time my now 2 3/4 yr old son became a lot more needy and attention seeking. Hence, spending a lot of time trying to customise a blank doll, as she was, the time was just not available to do anything properly. It was about this time I decided it was time to take a break from grad studies to spend time with my son during the day whilst working at night, so Ai was sold.
Since then, I've added to my resin family and not had a single doll I've hated since Ai, quite the opposite in fact :)
