Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. this has never happened to me, and i hope it never does! i have loved all of mine way more than i thought i would, though i can certainly understand how that would happen with all the excitement and expectations leading up to it. BUT, i like this persons thoughts on it. i think it's a good way to look at it:

    2. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Soom Keny. HATED it. I bought him on impulse and about 3 weeks before he arrived I knew I was going to be disappointed, and wouldn't be able to keep him around. Like, I opened the box, took out the padding, unzipped it, zipped it back up, and went "nope, not keeping this one".
Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Not even a little bit. I didn't even bother with eyes or a wig. I just took pictures and packed him back up.
If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
Went up for sale the next day. Sold a week later.
Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
Again, not even remotely. One, I realized I can't own anything smaller than an MSD. Two, I know that the person that DID buy him appreciated him a lot more than I ever would. Three, I used that money to buy a doll that I was 100% sure about. Four, much needed reality check when it comes to the "ooh pretty factor that Soom seems to radiate. Win/win/win/win!

    3. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Iplehouse Cherie, first time I see her face I hate her lips. Make-up artist done bad job with her lips and moreover, she has white spots on her face due from bad coating MSC.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Yes, I love her eyebrows, eyelashes and lips color but I still can't stand defects on her face-up.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
I sent her head back to Iplehouse and they redone face-up for me.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
When she backs her face-up is neat but they change her eyebrows and lips color which I really like on her old face-up but I am OK with that so I don't feel bad after all.

    4. Yes,
When my DZ Reiko arrived I was horrified. I ordered her with the face up eyes and wig she had in the photos.
The eyes she came with were different, her face up was different. She looked nothing like her pictures and I was devistated!

It took me quite a while to really warm up to her, to be honest. But after playing with her more, I decided to re-do her face up, and she was just transformed! She still looks nothing like the pictures, she looks completely a different doll, and I love her for it.

    5. I hated my first tiny bjd doll when I got him. Because he was not looked like on the web site.

    6. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Only one doll I have owned has made me totally disappointed with her upon box opening: Domuya's limited Marlene. She was totally floppy, her body sculpt was too gangly and starved, and there were numerous pits and bubbles in her tan resin. Her hands were the worse: not only did Domyua only include a "spear holding" hand for her right hand (which would be impossible to change out for a normal hand because of the tan resin), her left hand had a bad seam and imperfections in the resin which made it look like it belonged to a cheap vinyl/plastic toy.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Not for the better, no. It might have got worse the longer I owned her.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
The poor thing laid naked with limbs all over the place on my floor for a couple of weeks because every time I picked her up to pose her I would have to put up with a losing battle. I attempted to restring her, suede her, replace the awful lanyard hooks in her hands and give her something to wear, but none of that did much to make me like her.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I regret that I got her in the first place. Marlene was rehomed and I hope she's doing well there.

    7. i hope i don't hate my first doll o_O i study so long and many doll sites, every day for over a month now and before a little do, that in the end i didn't could say, wich face i like, i had an totaly overload XD after a few days break from dolly faces i'm sure now that i want a libra girl with a lighter make up. but i want to see all the other make ups too ;_; so i hope, thats in the end not the reason i don't like her ^^'

    8. I tend to be very fussy about dolls - even if there's something I slightly don't like in the picture, it's a huge turn off for buying the doll. So all the dolls I have gotten I love very much :)

    9. I bought a Green Bobobie Lucky last October, and as soon as she arrived, I just didn't like her. It was weird, because I loved owner pictures, and I had planned to customize her to be "Elphaba" from Wicked. I then ended up giving her to my brother, because he thought she was cool, and frankly, I didn't want her.

    10. I have had two ResinSoul Dolls and no matter how pretty they are, i just hate them so much. I think its just the effort of making them more functional, I had my RSLong less than 3 months before reselling him and he spent most of his time in the box because he couldnt even sit right and i cant get out much so going out and getting supplies to make him fit me was too much effort.

Also, I cant seem to like anything that is not MSD or SD, I like my larger dolls, so when I got a free YoSD from an event, I just couldnt bond at all with her, she looked disproportional and it irritated me so much.

    11. Yes D: DZ Luke. I've had bad experiences with DZ dolls, Now I won't buy from them again :/

    12. There was one I realy liked but I couldn't buy it. And when I had the doll in my hands at a doll meat I was glad because I realy didn't want it.

But I love all the ones that I have. Even the second hand one I bought mostly because I felt sorry for the doll. She is so different from the others but somehow that makes her fit in very well.

    13. No, I've never had that experience before and I don't think I'll ever hate a doll. I can understand being disappointed by the actual doll when it arrives compared to all my expectations for it, but I'd never end up hating it (though I might be a little miffed at the doll company >.<). I've been unable to bond with a couple of dolls before, but that's due to my preference for SD sized dolls mainly. Recently, I received a very yellowed Limho Mono doll and he's got some posing issues despite having been sueded and wired, and his head won't stay upright so he keeps looking down, but I'm happy with him despite all that.

    14. To be honest when i got my first BJD a resinsoul I renamed Lin I completely hated her :P she was floppy, had very little make up,and for some reason I thought she looked like a fish.... but now that I have had her for a while I love her and would NEVER get rid of her ^_^ just took some bonding time :D

    15. Thankfully, it never happened to me with the BJDs.. I had this experience with another kind of doll, though. She looked differently when I expected. It's really difficult at time to fully understand how the doll will look like when your primal evaluation is based only on photographs. Buyers can be fooled even if they have the dolls in their hands before paying. I was lucky in some way because I hadn't studied my dolls that much before buying... but they turned out to look as beautiful (and even more) as they were in the photos :)

    16. YES.

I LOVED factory pictures of DragonDoll Cheng on the uncle body! Spent my entire first paycheck as a store manager to get him and stuff for him...got him home...hated him from the start. He looked nothing like the pictures, his eyes looked squinty, his face looked mashed, his feet were poorly sculpted and he was hard to handle and pose. His faceup was bad too. So I worked on the faceup, got him a new wig and clothes....nothing. I hated having him and regretted it from day one. I ended up selling him at a loss.

Same with my AoD Hun Dong. His pictures were perfect for the character, but the doll looked NOTHING like factory pix. Even my friends questioned if I had been sent the wrong doll! But no, I hadn't. The pictures were just deceiving. I kept the body for my other boy and after putting the head through 3 different characters, I sold it off.

I have also disliked and sold off almost every ResinSoul or BBB I've ever had. The faces look too childish and the posing bothers me. The BBB bodies look blocky and the hands are too girly on the boys. I won't sell my tiny b/c he was a gift and I love my two RS girls now that they have unique faceups, but I still don't like their bodies and would prefer something better, just not sure what would look right and match.

I had a few others that weren't as great irl as in pix, but those two were the worst for me.

    17. Yes.

I've ordered a few from companies who are now well-known for over-editing their photos. The dolls looked nothing like the pictures on the website, both in sculpting and resin colour/texture. Promptly sold those dolls with less misleading photos, or in-person to locals.

    18. A Limited Crobidoll Dante was definitely not my taste, loved him in the pictures. But his head was really small in proportion to his body and his joints in his elbows were too clunky for me, his tan way too orange. >_> Dollmore Lawrence head and Dollmore Haneol Moon head were definitely not for me either. Though Kyle Reese is great but after a while changed my tastes. Minimee body was a no, no. Got it for the sole reason he was inexpensive. Received it and within minutes/hours he went for sale. He didn't sit too well. I really did not like that body at all. I've had many dolls come and go, but all I can say is those in particular really did not suit my tastes at first sight.

    19. I'm paying off my very first girl now. I'm excited to bring her home, but I was scared I just wouldn't like this hobby long enough to make it worthwhile. But I think it's been comforting to me to know that even if I hate her, if nothing goes right or we just don't 'click', I can always put her up for sale again. No, I don't expect to make what I paid for her (maybe I won't even get half!), but I paid for her with money I can afford to have sunk into her. I won't be out on the street if I can't sell her, my cat won't go hungry if I take the loss. So I sell her, she makes somebody else really happy, and I just lurk and look at pictures from then on. It's not a permanent situation.

    20. I haven't had it happen when I opened the box, necessarily, but very shortly thereafter. This looked like the most lovely girl. Really did. And within a short period of time I was actively freaking out every time I saw her. It was thoroughly creepy and I've never had it happen before, or since. It wasn't even so much that I hated her as that I couldn't bear to have her around!

I have had a bunch that just simply didn't work -- but it wasn't that I *dis*liked them, just that I didn't *like* them. But that one girl. *shudder* and it still is a sculpt that is highly thought of and gets much admiration from people!

Fortunately it was a long time ago now. I've bought and sold several others since, but usually because I wanted to do something slightly different, or found someone who wanted the sculpt much more than I did.
