Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. Kind of?

The guy I was dating at the time ordered a BBB Apollo and had him shipped to my address so I could do his face-up and make him an outfit. He was supposed to be the other half of a couple that we were going to get.

When I opened him up I just... couldn't stand him. I couldn't understand why he had chosen that mold because right off the bat I didn't like it. The photos weren't too bad, but everything about the sculpt turned me off. I even had a hard time taking photos of him.

Thankfully he went to his home and I didn't have to see him anymore. Cx

    2. It's not hate per se, but more disappointed. After a long time resisting, I finally got Soomed. I must admit that, compared to the other dolls (especially the bodies) that I bought from other companies, I wasn't thoroughly impressed with my Soom doll. I felt that the faceup was a lot darker in person than in the pictures, which can be attributed to the computers' different resolutions, and it can be remedied by giving the head another faceup, but the resin colour especially makes it really hard to hybridize :|

I still have the doll since the head is perfect for one of my characters, and I'm working towards some changes that's geared toward turning that disappointment into love for the doll.

    3. I'm not sure yet. The doll in question is in pieces after a good cleaning and I'm not feeling any urgency to put her back together. She's a AOD Quian and I really chose her for her body. I'm not so hot on the head. Maybe after she gets her new faceup she'll grow on me, but I'm fearing the worst.

Anybody know if AOD normal yellow resin matches any other company's?

    4. To be honest, I have never opened a doll and hated it before, however I hated parts about a doll, like I opened my KD Ani and she had defult faceup and I emediatly thought 'I hate her eyebrows! They are so ugly!' and then I liked her for a while, and then I started to really hate her faceup so much that I had to change it. No wigs or eye's really suited her. I changed her to a circus girl, and now I am much happier with her. I don't feel bad about changing her faceup at all, now I am 100% happier with her :)

    5. No, this has never happened to me. But I've been reading a lot of the responses on this thread, and I think a lot of people are confusing hating their doll from having to do work on it before it's complete. I mean, Amser's legs dangle and he has funky shoulders and his faceup wasn't 'right' for his character--but I fixed him (except for those shoulders!) And he's staying here. Sure, maybe jointing systems aren't perfect. Sure, maybe a faceup won't be totally what's pictured. But it's possible to fix these things--and maybe even find a love for the doll you couldn't beforehand.

      Just my 2 cents.

    6. Some people just don't feel making that effort is worth the time or money and would rather just sell the doll. I know I've lost a lot of money in the past trying to make dolls I am ambivalent on work, and in the end, it's not worth it. I'd rather sell the doll and put my energy into a different one.

I received an FCS doll I hated almost immediately on sight. To this day, I hate the sculpt. There is just something about it that I find off putting, and hadn't been able to see very clear pictures of it before I ordered mine. I had that doll for a week, and no amount of getting it a new faceup would have ever endeared it to me.

    7. i received my resinsoul Dai.....I was disappointed i must confess.....the factory faceup was so bad and bits of paint had been blobbed everywhere..she wasn't pretty in the slightest and looked a little androgynous.....So i whipped the faceup off and started again....i am please to report she now looks like a girl and is very pretty

    8. I think the second doll I received, an AoD Rao, was quite a surprise. The company was brand spanking new and offered a free faceup with each doll. A total neophyte to the hobby, I figured free = good. Boy, was I wrong. I pulled her out of the box and her faceup was done in shades of hot pink, eyebrows included. A very "interesting" combo with her purple freebie eyes, I must say. She looked a lot like an albino rabbit, and so very far from the chameleon type of doll I wanted. I was really disappointed since the faceup on her beau, an AoD WangZi, was neutral toned and more thoughtfully applied. Anyway, I decided I would have to learn to do faceups and other doll maintenance if I kept up with this hobby and I might as well begin immediately. Once I wiped her face clean, I began to appreciate her potential. I still have both dolls, so I suppose I wasn't precisely revolted.

    9. Actually.... it's literally the other way around for me.

When I ordered my first two dolls (yes two at once xD Kid Delf Bory and Cherry) I took them because I wanted to have my two dolls. Originally I wanted two DoC's but the site was down while I finally got my money. So I searched on Luts which one I could get instead. - Yes. I know that's something nobody should ever do.(Buying a doll in a rush just because you couldn't wait) But after a bit research (defently less than for the DoC's) I took them. I was more than sure that a Bory would be something for me but with Cherry I was unsure. I didn't liked the promotionpics like I almost loved the pics of Bory or the DoC's one. So I was nervous I would not like him. But the first moment I opend the bubblewrap around his head I gasped and felt in love with him!
In the end I didn't liked the light face-up Luts have fo him on the promo-pics and I got a noticeable darker Face-up. So it was my luck. And I still love them to bits.

    10. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Haha YES! I've had that doll rotting in its box in the trunk of my car for months.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
No. It wasn't a temporary thing like faceup/wig/one feature that I didn't like, the doll is just very poorly sculpted and engineered and I'm a perfectionist.

If it didn't, please explain what you did next (did you change the faceup, eyes, wig, ect).
This wasn't a doll I even wanted. My brother bought it for me for my birthday but then made me pay him back 3 weeks later. I knew the after market for cheap, widely available dolls was very bad so I decided to start modding the things I didn't like about the doll to see if I like it. Since the hands were exceptionally bad I decided to replace them but couldn't find any I liked that would match the paper white color of the doll so I bought delf hands and completely modded the arms into cyborg arms (which fixed the ugly clunky elbow joints too). Unfortunately while I really like the new arms, I still hate the rest of the doll! I would pretty much have to sulpt an entirely new face and legs to be satisfied and maybe someday I will but for now it's just too much hassle. And now that it's modded, even though the mods are good that reduces the resale price even more.

Do you feel bad about it now, or not? Explain.
I feel bad that I'm out the money. I could have bought a doll I really wanted like a kid delf for about the same price. D:<

    11. Ohhh yes. Will never forget it. It was Hyacinth by Elfdoll. Promo pics to die for. Ordered doll and then saw owner pics and loathed her. Ugghhhh! Luckily I saw a WTB on another forum and the doll arrived UPS, I re-labeled pkg and she was outta here the next day. New owner was thrilled, thank God. Also have gotten a few home that I've hated and they will be sold if I can ever figure out how to get my feedback URL on MP. Waiting.... waiting ..... for help on that. I hate hating a doll after I've paid for it. Luckily I am much much more careful now and always check owner pics first, because they show the "real" doll.

    12. I have never opened a doll and hated her... I have once been a tad bit disappointed but they usually grow on me! My newest doll should be coming in tomorrow and I'm almost positive that I'll love her!

    13. My problem is I've never met a bjd I didn't love. Haaa

But I have bought second hand dolls from people who say they never bonded...

I know I am going to have to put some up for sale one day. I guess when I've been in the hobby longer I will notice certain of my dolls duplicating a "type" I already have and could then market it out.

I would hate to have this experience though. :...( Sorry to you who have had it happen.

    14. Never really hated a doll off the bat, though as my tastes changed in this hobby over the years I found some heads horrifying. Alas they are now in a dark box on the doll table waiting for a time when I can sell them.

    15. Yes I bought one doll like that , however thankfully, he was not as expensive as some others and i was able to put him up for adoption. He is happy with his new family and surrounded by many others like him. it was the elf ears that I just could not deal with. I don't know what it is that I was thinking buying that. no offense to elf lovers they just don't do it for me. I prefer more humanoid dolls.

    16. Errr, I had a lot of..."s/he didn't look like the doll in the promo pictures"...
I was really disappointed the first time a laid eyes on my two boys (Illusion Spirit Calos and Doll Family H XiangYi)...they looked so different without wig that I wanted to sell them and buy another mold. Luckily, with the right hair, eyes and outfit, I fell in love with them again :)

    17. No, because i would never buy a Doll i hate.. oô

    18. I purchased a body for my boy and it looked great from all the pictures I looked at. It was suppsoed to be flexible and a resin match for him, so I bought it. Once it arrived though... I hated it. It was flexible, yes, resin matched, yes, but by goodness I didn't like the look or feel of it in real life. HIs head fit perfectly on it but it just... didn't match HIM at all. Just something in the gut.

So don't worry, it happens to many of us!

    19. Yes, I've done this a couple of times......and have sold almost straight away!
I put it down to experience and move on!

    20. Yes, my second bjd.
I wasn't used to looking past the company photos to see the actual bjd, so I didn't really look and see a lot of the flaws that should have been obvious. I actually realized part of the way through the layaway that he wasn't for me, but I thought I would give him a chance anyway.
When I finally got him, I opened him up and.... hated him. His tan resin was actually the only part of him I liked.
He went on the marketplace pretty fast.
I've since had a few bjds that I didn't love, but none that I felt the same hatred for.
