Did you ever buy a doll and just hate it?

Sep 25, 2008

    1. I try to really take my time when buying dolls, and not buy them as a quick reaction. I also, try to get dolls from companies that I know, and/or really research the ones I don't.

I have bought a few that I have let move on, but I didn't hate them. I just wanted something else more. :)

    2. I don't think that I've ever had whole dolls that I've just hated, but bodies, yeah. I bought an oldskin SD10 boy body off the market place recently, and while I've had Volks SD10's before, this thing was just... yech. Stringing it was an adventure, and then a disaster. It didn't pose to save it's life. On top of that, the doll needs to be a Girl modded body, not just a boy body, so I need to buy him a new one anyway.

I'm currently looking at Swarrico with a chest mod job...

    3. Hate might be too strong a word, but I do have one that I was disappointed with from the moment I opened the box. I'm still working with her and am finding that she's starting to grow on me. I do admit that she was a bit of an impulse buy and I may not have gotten her had I done bit more research.
Live and learn, I guess. She does seem to be taking on a bit of life recently even if she's not my favorite.

    4. i wish it would not happen to me :(

    5. My first BJD was a Peakswood Yeru. When I opened her up. I just couldn't see me playing with her. She did not appeal to me at all. My second doll I don't even remember who she was, but again no bond. Then I saw a tan Dollmore Ray and oh I knew that was the one!!!!! It was on ebay and I waited for the last minute and my computor shut down............... I missed her by seconds. I was really frustrated. Then I saw a Boding Boding Alice come up for sale (again on ebay) I jumped on her BIN and I was off and running! I still have her, love her to death (everyone thinks she's freaky looking and my Mother says she scares her, LOL) I recently found Boding Boding Sharmin just for Alice to have her sister near.

    6. Yes, that has happened to me. When I bought my HDF Pitta from the marketplace I was very excited and looked forward to having him home. I bought an outfit, eyes and his wig beforehand (which I always do - no BJD will enter my corners if I do not have their accessoires.), but when I opened the box I was like "What is that...?"
Funny thing is, the moment I gave him his eyes, clothes and wig I was impressed by his beauty. I wasn't a newbie in the hobby and knew what BJDs look like naked, but I've never seen a change of that extend before, haha!
He's still with me, well-loved and gets a lot of attention.

    7. Thank God, no. Though I do go through my wishlist and prune from time to time to avoid it!

    8. Yeah, once. I bought a Special K from Elfdoll because I thought his fight wounds looked really cool. Then he arrived, and I went, ".....................I could have been perfectly happy just looking at pictures of him. I don't need or want the real head!" I ended up selling him within a week. He was cool, he just had no place in my lineup or interest to me beyond aesthetic. I think a lot of people have at least one like that. XD

    9. I got a real puki and I don't want to say hate, but I just really didn't like the bow legs, kept the faceplate and sold the body within two weeks.

    10. I've sold a LOT of dolls... but I haven't hated or even disliked any of them... most of them I've actually loved, they just weren't for me and I'd rather send them on to a new home than have them sit on my shelf or in a box with no attention :( I've kinda concluded that even if I love the sculpt to death, I find it hard to get inspired by boys and MSD size dolls :sweat I first got into this hobby because I wanted girls in over the top super frilly cute as hell froofy dresses... if I had stuck to that in the first place and not got distracted by all the other options out there, I probably never would have sold a doll...! All the ones that fit the image are still here...!

    11. Eh, I only had one case in where I opened the box and the doll wasn't what I had expected, It was put on the marketplace within the hour. *LOL* It wasn't that I hated it was more like "What was I thinking?" kind of situation.

    12. This has happened to me. I tried to like him. But I ended up selling him.

    13. I wouldn't say i hate the doll, ( RS Dian) he's just, given me NOTHING but problems, couldn't pose him, his torso kept slipping off his pelvis. when i tried to restring him, NIGHTMARE, i sat down three times, restringing him, over and over, new elastic, over and over, and he just will not work. His torso still slides off his pelvis, his arms, are always unflexable, they won't straighten, his legs jerk up... no matter how many times i restrung him, if it was, loose at ALL, he will just flop, and glare at me...... that's ALL he has been doing, is glaring at me..>.<

i don't have this issue with either of my other two. they are, perfectly fine. but it's like from day one, he's just been unhappy with me. Ironically, he likes the doll my friend and i bought ( it was her xmas gift we split the price) the only time he is not glaring at me? is then the two are close.. i am sending him to a friend to re-string him, and see if he is better, if not.. off to my friend he goes...

    14. When I first opened my Dollzone Tan Ying, I was really disappointed. The wig I bought for him looked
horrible, and his face looked really white-ish compared to the rest of him. His default eyes looked cheap
and horrible, and his facial proportions looked very strange..... I was sad because I had been so excited to get him, and had waited a long time... and after having paid the extra for him in tan, it just added to the
dissapointment. Once I put him in the clothes I had bought for him, traded wigs around so he had red
hair, and put his new eyes in, I really loved him.

    15. It's hard to believe, but I was really disappointed when I opened my IH Harin.

I bought her from someone on the MP, and when I got her, she was in pieces - that was to be expected and didn't bug me...but she was FILTHY. Like, covered in grime and had a lot of staining from her wig. Her face was unprotected and she had bent eyelashes and a scuffed faceup that I had to wipe.

Then, when I strung her, I discovered how limited the YID line's engineering is :sweat. Also, my first face-up of her was a fail. I even listed her for sale at one point.

But then I thought of how gorgeous other Harins had looked and how I had jumped at the chance to own her second-hand. So I did a new face-up on her, played with eyes and wigs...and now she is my favorite doll! So I agree sometimes you need to just give yourself a little more time.

    16. Very very interesting read, this thread. Thank all of you for sharing all the stories, they are helpful and fascinating.

I am a reaserved person and so normally when I approach a new doll I carefully keep a mental distance. I always buy them blank, and with already in mind that for me the joy lies in modding and painting and sewing and crafting.

So after they arrive I will spend some weeks working on them. During that time is the bonding time. When they are done I love them. It's like a miniterm pregnancy :P

I am cowardly too, and a miserable nit-picker. So I would not dare to buy a doll all pre-conceptualized already, because I know I would find many massive disparaties between my expectations and how she/he finally would present in person. And subsequently go through what you all are describing. Then, worse still, with a fully outfitted doll I don't think I could give myself permission to completely change her/him. After all that work someone already did on the doll, and then, all the money paid.... brr.

So based on how I know myself, I chose the safe and easy way out for me: A doll that I still get to adjust all over. Frustration avoidance, I know :P

    17. Has anyone else ever opened a doll and hated it upon first sight?
Not hated but I felt a little disappointed at first, when my last doll arrived.

Did you opinion change after a few minutes?
Not after a few minuted but a few days. It's fine now, though. ^^

    18. I have never HATED a doll but I have come to understand what collectors mean when they say they havent been able to bond with a doll.

    19. yes, actually, well hate may be a bit rough word, but felt like.. omg.. I dont want this this isn't the doll I ben waiting for at all in two months and so on.. I changed the eyes.. from light blue too dark brown,.. and hated her less, and then, my love for her have grew and comes and goes. Kindof special relationship. I still have her, a lot of the time she layes and I dont do anything with her, but when I do I feel very much love to her and a strong bond. She is the first doll I baught, but not the first to arrive to my home because after paying her on the site I fond and bought one on ebay secound hand, so she arrived before.

    20. i always had trouble with the collectors saying they are selling because they are not bonding
with their doll.. I never got that... UNTIL: i got my first NEW doll from Leeke....
No waiting.... fast shipping, everything was perfect. He arrived and I was couldn't bond with him.
EEK! Did I say that? LOL! I sold him in less then three months of getting him for three times less then
I paid for him. I figured out it was the fact he was new and not pre-loved. All my dolls have a history
or story when they arrive here. He did not.... So... from now on.. I buy ONLY secondhand dolls.
