Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I used to love playing with and dressing up dolls as a kid! I stopped when I was 11-12 but I think it's a pretty natural progression!

    2. Did you hate doll as a child and now you cannot get away from them
No. I never liked or had any baby dolls as a kid. I wasn't into Barbies that much, either! But I never hated dolls. I DID like the 1/6 size GI Joes (they were so much more articulated!). And I liked non-traditionally-girly toys. I liked space ships and sci-fi stuff (yeah, I was a bit geeky!).

and how did you get involve with doll in the 1 place?
Dolls were cool because I liked historical and fantasy things and would try and make them outfits, and I like human or elven characters with stories. I liked dragons better, but dolls were cool enough. I bought some with historical costumes when I was older--like high school and college age. Then left them alone for a while until JUST before I got involved with bjds.

Then when I was older, artist porcelains were really big and I used to see them on Home Shopping Network and started getting interested. They were mostly babydolls which were not my thing, though, but a few were a little older and had some historical costumes... I started seeing a lot of vinyl doll customization pop up on ebay and other websites, too, which intrigued me. Then I saw an obitsu figure that could be customized how you liked and I thought it would be cool to make a character and to use it for art reference (like many others who came to bjds). Searching for a wig for my obitsu, I started seeing references to bjds on ebay.... I was REALLY intrigued, but at that time (2002), they were not available. Only as kits from agents in Japan. The few references on ebay were only to wigs that might fit a Super-Dollfie. Eventually, more and more SDs were being sold (but still very difficult to get unless it was a basic msd kit from Volks). But there were some ebay auctions for customizations that would go well over $1,500...! As soon as I could hunt down a doll I could actually order and really, really wanted (because they were WAY so expensive!), I finally thought about getting my first in 2004 and the rest is history!

It was a large-sized boy. Older dolls and boys were impossible almost to find as any sort of doll. I had a few Kens before that, but they weren't so satisfactory, even though Mattel was getting more creative with it--a bit! BJDs were SO much more varied than any dolls available. I was finally able to get something beautiful and older and an ELF (first boy was elf-eared), and it was just SO nice!!!! :D

    3. I loved Barbie when I was little. I kind of quit them when I got into video games. I got into BJDs because they're like anime-esque and I like anime... though my doll collection has been becoming more realistic as I go, well it's weird, the dolls above 1/4 size are realistic and the ones 1/4 size and below are more stylized.

I was also interested into BJDs because there's so many pretty boys.

    4. I never had dolls as a kid. They freaked me out & I hated baby dolls.
All of a sudden last year something clicked- I think I saw one on the internet.
At fifty + I had the money, sooo...
      Bam, I have five !

    5. When I was a child? yes! I was terrified of the american girl dolls! and I didn't care for barbies.

But now that I'm an adult, I LOVE dolls! Asian dolls, that is. I still don't like barbies or american girl dolls.

    6. I actually used to own all sorts of barbies, I actually still have a limited edition one that looks like a snow princess in my parent's closet, I don't dare take it out of the closet since it was the last gift my god parents gave to me before they left the state for good to live in Florida. It's probably because of that, that dolls are now endeared to me, because before I owned barbies again... Man the messed I made on their faces with finger painting was horrifyingly hilarious.

I didn't actually find out more about bjds until last year, but in 2010 I was seeing them on Deviantart and I was getting rather curious, though I was more content to be derpy with my friends online than actually go find out more about them, but boy am I glad I researched them now x)

    7. When I was younger, I kind of... *puts hands over face.* I used to rip off Barbie heads when I was younger. I didn't dislike dolls and when I got a little bit older, all I wanted were Barbie and Bratz dolls. (And I did NOT rip off their heads. (:)
How did I get involved? Well, I was searching up pullip dolls back when I was in seventh grade and through google images, I found a pic of my dream bjd. Ever since then, I've been dying to get one. I'm currently saving up for one now. ^^

    8. I didn't have a lot of toys when I was little, and I remember cherishing my horses above all else. I didn't like Barbies because they wouldn't stand up or really pose, and even though I loved art dolls, my parents could never justify spending that kind of money on something they saw as a toy. I don't like the newer "fashion" dolls like Bratz or Monster High, either--their heads and buggy eyes are just too big for those skinny bodies--but I'm happy that I've found BJDs. Especially now that I'm out on my own and can afford the occasional splurge. They're poseable and fairly naturally proportioned, and I like that I can blush their bodies and give them faceups and sew clothes for them. I like having such lovely models for sewing and for photos. It gives me something to do on rainy days.

    9. I loved Barbies as a child! I wasn't a big fan of other dolls though.
I found out about bjds through DA.

    10. I liked the ideas of dolls but somehow was never satisfied with them: once you've dressed Barbie, what do you do with her? A little story!
So you do your little role play; all good stories need a problem or drama in the middle ... and there was my problem: in the middle of her big drama scene, Barbie is smiling!Always smiling. I remember getting quite cross with Barbie specifically. "Normal" dolls are just too limiting for the likes of me

    11. Well.. I didn't hate them, but when I got a new one they were only fun the first few days, sometimes it even only lasted an evening. Afterwards they just grew boring ): I liked to dress them from time to time however, but dolls weren't my first choice of toy.

I got interested in them here as a teenager a few years ago with what started off as fascination and later it grew into liking and at last it was love :D I would never ever want to live without my doll. I like making things for her too much ^^

    12. I did not hate dolls. I did not like the look of barbie dolls though. I still liked the idea of changing there outfits combing there hair and taking care of them. I even had a cabbage patch kid.(kinda sad I had to get rid of him.) I was never able to buy anything for him though. Other then that I did not know anyone who really had dolls so I did not have any experience with them sadly. Just had Action Figures(Which are boy dolls basically lol.)

:) I so can't wait for my first bjd. :fangirl::D

    13. Well, I'm a transman.. and I guess, like you'd kinda expect, I resented dolls as a child and resented even the idea that I could possibly like 'girl' things, and filled my little head up with trying to be cool, and wet dreams of me *totally* not letting other kids into the drivers seat of that really... expensive... drivable Jeep.. instead of dreaming of the Barbie dream-house. Well... NOWW.... I really wish I had the stupid dream-house stashed away in the attic! I'm worried my YOSD's will want the Jeep my folks could never afford AS WELL, too. -huff- ............................................so cute.. n.n Still broke.. o_o

    14. I thought they were freaky, then loved them, then hated them for a little while because I couldnt afford one, and then loved them again. xD

    15. I've always, always loved dolls. It started out with Barbies. I had a ton of them, and some clothing, but I made their houses out of cardboard boxes and such. I spent so much time setting up Barbie campsites and villages in the back yard. I played with them until I moved out at 19 and joined the Army (I had little sisters, so I had an excuse to play!)

I was sadly without any dolls until I was about 40, when I started buying some vintage Crissy dolls (I'd always wanted them) from Ebay. I also collected some Bratz before I saw BJDs. I was on another site, called Swapbot, when I met a DOA member who had a pic of her BJD in her avatar and I became interested, then fascinated! She sent me an invite to DOA, and now I have eight, only two years after that!

    16. I've always loved dolls, & have never been without out them :fangirl:

My sister bought a Mini Dollfie, years ago, & I started looking into them, but I use to lust over a Pink Haired AI Doll/Custom House, but I would never take the plunge... until I started looking at Volk's Super Dollfies & MSD :aheartbea

The only kind of dolls that use to freak me out were the Ventriloquist Dummies.. seeing them up close in shops was enough to make me stop breathing !!

    17. yeah, I didn't hate them, I collected Barbies, but instead of playing "house" or whatever young girls do, I messed with them..... unrooted or cut their hair, made poor attempts at re-painting them..... would swap heads and especially loved the gymnast barbies for their extra joints :)

guess I'm in the right place now huh?

    18. I loved Barbies when I was a kid, and I had a baby doll that could pee and poop and everything :P One thing I didn't not like was porcelaine dolls... They freaked me the freak out! I still wouldn't want one in my house... They're just not right....I'm afraid they'll murder me in my sleep....and eat my children alive... *shudder*

    19. I used to hate dolls when I was a kid, definitely. I like MLP, LPS, Jurassic Park... Anything that was an animal, I was into, as well as Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles... But I've also loved art, crafts, and drawing. I think as I got older, I noticed dolls around and appreciated different aesthetics of them. I now have friends that are into dolls, and that sort of helps spark a very passive interest of mine... And now I love them!

    20. I liked Barbies as a child, and I've always like small things and miniatures, though I've never had a dollhouse. But i quit playing with Barbies- not detailed enough. Then I saw bjd's and it was a perfect fit.
