Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I've always liked dolls with the exception of antique looking dolls. My mother put some creepy old dolls with glass eyes in my room when I was little and I used to feel like they were 'looking' at me. I had to cover them up so I could sleep at night! As soon as I was old enough, I stashed them in the closet - seriously, you would think a mother would figure that out.

But I've always been interested in other dolls (the more adult looking the better - they are less creepy to me, doubtless due to this early trauma!)

    2. I actually really hated dolls as a kid lol I remember I would cut off all my barbie's hair and draw on her face. I really hated those things. I preferred toy cars and, of course, action figures.

As for how I got involved, I stumbled across BJD's on deviantart. Needless to say I've been in love with them since lol

    3. I really hated dolls as a kid, yes. I shoved the few Barbies I had in the bottoms of drawers and boxes, stuffed my Cabbage Patch Kid off somewhere, and mainly played with stuffed animals and My Little Ponies instead. My parents pretty much never bought me dolls, since they could tell I didn't like them, so I didn't have to deal with finding places to stuff them very often, thankfully. (My sister loved them and had plenty of Barbies, but when we played together it was always Ponies instead.) Honestly, even I'm still a little surprised now that I have so many BJDs, though to be fair, only one so far is actually "human," so maybe it's not that strange after all...

    4. I love dolls when I was a child! Mostly barbies though. I would dress them up and make up them (went horribly). I still have them even now, they're like my childhood memories . They're just in display now. But since I found out about Bjd, I took one of them out and tried redoing the faceup and tried sewing for them ;-;

    5. I never hated dolls. On the whole, I enjoyed them thoroughly and intensely when I was a child-- though I can't say that my relationship with them was unfraught.

I was desperately embarrassed about my Barbie collection, starting from around age 8, but I still played with them 'in secret' until I was 11. And even then, I remember sometimes hauling the box out in my teens, just to say 'hi'. I even did a couple of repaints, way before I knew that was thing.

One of my Aunts also sent me a porcelain doll for my birthday every year until I was... I don't remember. But it must have been for at least ten years. When I was very young, I loved having them to look at (I wasn't permitted to play with them; they were just on display in my room).

As I got older though, they were embarrassing. And I frequently worried that they didn't like me. I remember being about ten, and sometimes feeling afraid to go into my room at night, in case they were in conference, talking about how they hated me.

    6. I had a gigantic collection of Barbie dolls as a child. Gigantic and unsettling to my parents, I think (although I only realised that retrospectively, whoops), and I took the best care of them that I could. Hair always brushed and they were always dressed very slowly and carefully, much to my friends' frustration, so the outfits wouldn't tear! I subscribed to the collector's magazine for years, too, even though I was only about 6 or 7 to begin with! I gladly had that instead of pocket money of my own. Again, unsettling my parents in the process... I remember begging for a porcelain doll for years, but that was always a definite no - probably because of the creepiness factor. I'm actually slightly creeped out by them now, probably by the vacant staring that I now know ABJD do not have, but at the time I loved their ornate dresses ^__^

tl;dr// Yes, I have definitely always been a doll person! orz

    7. I hated dolls growing up. Instead of a baby doll I carried around my stuffed Ninja Turtle.
I had a few Barbies, though.. but to me, Barbie wasn't a doll, she was Barbie.

    8. I honestly loathed dolls as a kid. I played with Barbies some but baby dolls or pocelain dolls? NOPE! They terrified me because I had a friend with one of those weird squirmy "my real baby" dolls except hers was defective with one of its eyes bulging out and the sounds it made were slurred and creepy. My friend said her doll was "special" but her "special" doll gave me nightmares for years.

When I discovered BJDs I didn't think they were creepy, I thought they were beautiful and I quickly grew to love and appreciate them as well as other kinds of dolls.

    9. When I was younger I really didn't like playing with dolls. They kinda used to creep me out. But being in the hobby now, has really changed my point of view.

    10. I didn't loath dolls when I was a child, but I certainly had no interest in them. I had toy dinosaurs, sharks, trucks, and a lot of different animal toys, but dolls weren't my thing. To this day I hate baby dolls or anything baby-y. I like bjds that are mature looking and I like having them because I enjoy customizing them.

    11. Had dolls as a child, but they weren't my thing. Plushies, bicycles, books, more like it. And daydreaming, lots of that. I played with dolls because some of my friends did, but that's about it. I even resisted bjd's, until that fateful doll meet I accompanied my daughter to. Almost made it out of there without my desire for one being stirred. Almost.

Now I spend money I shouldn't... I really need to learn to sew.

    12. I really REALLY hated doll when I was younger. I used to paint all over their faces and take off their heads. Mostly I didn't like them because they couldn't move, and liked more boy toys because they could move more.

When I was in high school is when I discover DOT and fell in love with them. They were everything I wanted when I was a child. They could move very well, they could stand on their own, and mostly I could customize them.

    13. I always liked playing with Barbies and action figures and that kind of thing. The only dolls I ever disliked (and still do) are baby dolls. They creep me out sooo much.

    14. As a kid I liked playing with dolls. As I got older I guess I tried to repress it. I found it again and am very glad that I did!

    15. I always loved what few toys I had. We could not afford the pretty dolls. At Christmas things were different. Then there were presents. I do remember when it was time to pick out a Teddy Bear, my Aunt and Sister forced me to get a bear instead of the Monkey doll I loved. I loved the bear too once it was home, but to this day, I still wish I had that wonderful monkey.

    16. growing up I had Baribies and bratz dolls and things like that. but as I grew out of barbies and things I ended up some where down the line afraid of dolls so I hated them. Usually dolls like Cabbage Patch dolls, Chucky like dolls, Clown dolls, and Marrionette puppets And Porcelain dolls... (those all scared me and I hated 'dolls' because of them xD) And I think I became interested in BJD's because they look so realistic yet not at the same time. Which is kind of weird, you would think that would make me more afraid of them xD

    17. I always liked dolls. My mother would buy me a new Barbie every so often, and I had a big collection of dolls from my father's country (very traditional, lots of intricate beadwork, definitely not to be played with!) and some porcelain dolls.

That said, there was a period where I loathed BJD's specifically, but only because all my friends had them and I couldn't afford one. I got over it once I got a job because I knew it was only a matter of time before I'd get my own. And now that I DO have my own, my love of BJD's is stronger than ever.

    18. I've always loved them :) never was interested in any other toy apart from crafting sets and stuff like that. but I never cared about teddy bears or soft toys or anything like that, it always had to be dolls. not necessarily hard dolls, I loved rag dolls for about 5 years, but I have alway sbeen a huge doll enthusaist

    19. I didn't like dolls to be truthful. I had barbies and baby dolls as a child but grew out of that. Then my twin sister got into them and I STILL didn't like dolls much. Then I started looking into BJDs when my sister got her first one around 2 years ago. When I got my first one as a 2012 X-Mass gift I was in love. I now have 10 dolls, 2 of which I am still waiting on, and 3 pet dolls.... All in one year lol.

    20. I've always liked dolls and toys, so I guess the progression to BJD over time was almost inevitable. I did go through a bit of a phase where I got rid of all my Barbies and stuff, but after some time I started bringing other toys and things into the house and when I went to college my art studio was the one with all the dolls and toys--people even brought me toys, sometimes. :) Not long after college came Pullips, then Blythe, and finally BJD. :)
