Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I never really like dolls as a kid, people would buy me barbies and I would just put them in the storage, mainly because I'm scared of them (I used to think that the dolls are watching me at night so I'm always paranoid when the light is off). Oh and the movie chucky also contributes to me being scared of dolls at night too.

After a while though I started to get used to dolls and as I grow up around the otaku hobbies, I started noticing these beautiful BJDs.
I looked them up at google for a while and got attached to this one particular doll from Ringdoll. Last December I finally had the courage to buy them (because they had a sale too).

    2. I did like dolls growing up but anything more realistic looking than a Barbie (aka, porcelain dolls and BJDs) scared me a lot. It was like that until about a couple of years ago when I started to come around because my girlfriend wanted a BJD really badly, so I started to make myself used to looking at them to see if I could handle one in the house. Once her first one arrived, I was in love and now have 4 1/2 of my own. :)

    3. As a kid I didn't like dolls very much. A had several baby dolls but never played with them. Some relatives thought to buy me a Barbie would make me happy.
I only played with them when a friend visited me who always wanted to play with Barbies.
I prevered Lego. Me and my brother build so many stuff from an ordinary lego box. It was so much fun. And I also joined him when he played with all his farm toys like tractors.

I could never imagined to have dolls again...well things can change ;)

    4. I never really hated dolls, although I went through a period where they scared me. I played with tons of dolls as a child, and collected porcelain before I discovered BJDs. BJDs were so much cooler, because unlike porcelain, I could actually handle them. Now, I have seven and they are proudly on display in my room (but when I sleep alone in the house I still have to sometimes move them into the kitchen or dining room).

    5. As a kid I really loved porcelain dolls and used to collect them a lot, and would get them frequently as gifts during Christmas. Time went on and I kinda grew out of them when I was 10-ish and moved past them because my friends found them creepy. Then I found BJD's when I was 15 or so and loved them instantly. I also have a huge fascination with miniatures so it kinda all just fell together into liking BJD's

    6. I didn't hate them but I certainly didn't love them. I never played with Barbies (I was a Polly Pocket kinda girl lol) so I didn't really consider myself a doll person. Then I watched an episode of X-Files when I was around 10 that featured a porcelain doll that killed people so that kind of screwed me up with porcelain dolls  But after I got into the BJD hobby I began getting annoyed with people who called dolls "creepy" so I decided I would no longer discriminate against different kinds of dolls and now I have a lot of different types :)

    7. I was a tomboy as a kid. Had dolls/action figures but they didn't do much for me. Then one day I came across a random image of a beautiful person that literally made my breath catch. Imagine my surprise when I found out it was a doll!

Unfortunately, I no longer remember the name of the doll that first pulled me in, and by that time, the doll was already an old model :pout:

    8. Being suddenly really into dolls was so strange for me. I spent most of my younger years being a complete tomboy - I didn't HATE dolls, but I didn't play with them, I played with trains and cars and things like that. People bought me dolls from time to time but they would be played with minimally before being put away in favour of lego and other things...

At around 15 I discovered BJDs online, and I fell in love. At the time it wasn't really feasible for me to buy one, so I made do with much smaller (and cheaper!) Obitsu dolls. I got a whole bunch of them and customised them to look like my characters, and now I have Alena, who I adore, and I'm actually really glad I didn't rush into it and try to save for a BJD back then.

But it's so strange to suddenly be obsessed with them. I'm always looking for stuff relating to dolls, thinking about what I can make for her, planning on who to buy next. Every now and then people remind me that back when I was a kid I hated barbies!

    9. Never hate them! Some child-alike dolls might give me some uncomfortable feeling but I don't think I hate them... It's just what they meant to be ^^ I had played some fashion dolls when I was young. And got into BJD because my girl friend.. She drug me in!

    10. I did hate dolls when I was a child. I thought they were super creepy.

Fast forward 20 years and I'm now an owner of 3 beautiful dollfies. When I started figure collecting, I found out about Dollfie Dreams but didn't think much of them until I started talking with a DD collector. She sparked my interest for DDs. Then I saw amazing pictures of how you can customize them any way you want to look super pretty.

    11. I didn't care for dolls as a kid. I didn't hate them or really like them.
I played more with my older brother's action figures than my own Barbies. I was more of a My Little Pony kid.

    12. I never hated dolls but there was a time I was so tired of it. People give me other kinds of doll present too much and I do not have space or time to take care all of them. But now I am so in to it

    13. No, I've always loved dolls.

    14. I never really like dolls much as a child , the only dolls i like now are living dead dolls, plushies and bjd's :D

    15. yes i did i hated them i used to burn the head of barbies , till i seen bjd's and living dead dolls after that i just loved them lol

    16. I never had Barbies or other dolls as a kid (well I had one Ariel from Little Mermaid doll) and I never really pined for any. As I got older, of course, I didn't really think about dolls but my dad loved to take my brother and me to antique stores and when I was there, I was always drawn to the dolls. I loved looking at them yet I never actually wanted one. Until this hobby of course. I think my dad would have been interested in getting me into the hobby (general doll hobby) because he would always ask me if I wanted one.

    17. I was actually really afraid of BJDs for a long time! I always thought they were cute at first glance, then, the more I looked at them, the more I started to think they were scary. Over the course of a minute, I'd go from thinking "Oh! She's so precious!" to "Oh my goodness her eyes look like deep pools of evil and she wants to kill me". Quite a drastic jump. After a while, I saw a few dolls that just managed not to horrify me. I actually happened upon a very sweet Alice in Wonderland themed doll, but she was on a site I couldn't read and even translated, couldn't understand.

I started to think the anime-style dolls wouldn't scare me as much, since they basically just looked like giant pose-able anime figures. I settled on getting a Dollfie Dream 2 body with 2 different heads. I thought I'd be able to change out their heads freely, but I ended up feeling guilty! I got my first resin boy (Luts Senior Delf Sherard) a year after, and the hobby just sort of kept evolving from there for me! My dolls don't usually freak me out, thankfully. (For a while, one of the 2 DD heads did. She looked so angry and just didn't have fitting eyes or a nice face-up. She's much less scary now!)

    18. I used to hate dolls and still quiet dislike a bunch of them, the exception is ball jointed dolls. I love most all of them because they are all beautiful creations!

    19. I was a tomboy as a kid, so I didn't really like girls toys, and I was never interested in sewing. It came as a big shock to my mum when I told her I'd bought a bjd and was making clothes for it XD

    20. I didn't hate them but I was more into animals than people and then later Transformers. Beast Wars specifically because they were still animals. I did collect the Princess Starla and the Jewel Rider dolls and played with them quite a bit but that was it as far as any kind of human type toy goes. When me and my friends played house I was always the weird, unmarried cat lady while they had make believe husbands and baby dolls. Even now the more animalistic or monstrous the doll is the better for me and I probably still wouldn't consider myself a doll collector. I just buy what fits into my overall collection.
