Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. When I was little I had a herd of barbies and an even bigger hoard of clothes for them, I loved them. I still have a few barbies ... somewhere.
I also had a Crissy doll and was heartbroken when I cut her hair, and it didn't grow back ...

I was never a fan of the bigger doll or baby type dolls though.

    2. When I was a kid I didn't have any interests in dolls. Got a baby doll from my mother and it ended up underneath my bed with the dust., and i didn't have any interest in Barbie dolls ether. Only a few times when I was playing with my cousin. When I started to get interested into BJD I don't really remember. But it must have been when I was more interested in Manga and Anime and got to know what a BJD was. And one day, about 2-3 years ago I told my friend I would want one but I don't know anything about them and she just said "Hey, you know what. You can have one of mine since I don't use him and he just collect dust in the basement." And I got my first bjd free. c: And after that I started to learn more and I searched for more information. Today I have 3 BJD and I still have my first one. C:

    3. I've always really liked dolls. I grew up with Barbies, G.I. Joes (action figures, sorry), porcelain dolls, and baby dolls. I love the opposability of dolls, their little fingers, and designing clothing for them. :aheartbea

    4. I really love dolls! My family neither hate nor like them, but all my friends throw over my that they're ugly and really expensive! They are saying all the time that I could use my money better and that they are so ugly and creepy and they think I'm the weirdest person on earth XD But I don't really care, I still love dolls!

    5. I wouldn't go so far go say I "hated" dolls as a kid, but I much preferred my horses and other animals to human dolls :D

    6. I had tons of fun with barbies as a kid, but certain kinds of other dolls creeped me out. I wouldn't say I hated them though, but I did use to get rather unnerved when I would walk down the hallway at night at my grandparents' place to use the bathroom and their doll shelf was facing down the hall. Eep! D:

    7. I've always liked dolls, and I admit, when I first found out about BJDs I was a little taken aback. It took me a while to get used to the idea, but it gradually grew on me. My interest came to a point of full fruition and now I am waiting on my first one!

    8. I've always loved dolls, and got sad when I was "too old" to play with them. I never wanted to collect Barbies because I didn't really connect with them as I got older. When I first stumbled across BJDs years ago the price was intimidating, but about a year ago I attended a BJD panel at an anime con, and I've been hooked ever since.

    9. I loved:love toys (dolls, plastic figures and teddies) when I was a child and I still do today. Of course there are many different types of doll out there and as expected not all of them are to my taste, however I respect all doll collectors. I'm no doll snob so i'm reasonably tolerant of all types of dolls even the antique dolls that I often tend to find a little creepy. :shudder

    10. I used to play with barbies and action figures as a kid, but after watching toy story I developed a fear of all things toys, especially dolls. Now I'm not too afraid of dolls (except for the antique ones which just give me bad vibes) and I'm very attached to my own bjd. I plan on buying more bjds for myself. So, I suppose my whole situation is rather ironic.

    11. I hated dolls as a girl; I preferred boy toys. I didn't like baby dolls or fashion dolls at all. I really don't know why, but I had no interest in them at all. I'm still not interested in baby-style dolls or American girls or anything similar. BJDs, on the other hand, attracted me because they're artworks rather than toys, even if I do like to play with them. Maybe it's because I'm not being told I must play with dolls that I can really appreciate and enjoy them. Although I've admired them for several years now, I've only just entered the hobby. I own one and have two more ordered. And one more I'm hoping to save up for.

    12. I loved baby dolls and Barbie dolls when I was a kid. I used to sit down with the Christmas catalogs and make huge dolly wish lists. I guess I still do the same thing now, just with BJDs and the Internet.

    13. I didn't really have much exposure to dolls or figures as a kid, though I suppose I was indifferent to them? I've loved BJDs ever since I first saw a photo of one on dA though, just because of how pretty they are! It was only later that I really started appreciating how customisable & varied they are though, and I only started thinking seriously about buying one once a few of my friends did first.

    14. As a kids I had a bunch of Barbies and polly pocket toys so I never hated dolls. I loved dressing them up in different closed and even tried my hand at making dolls with yarn, pencils, fabric, etc. And eventually when I saw the dolls online I was kind of meh because I thought they were video game characters or something (specifically dream of doll's Sha, he looks like he is in some anime/video game). But grew to loving them quite quickly. Now I am obsessed :)

    15. I liked dolls as a child, but they were nothing special to me
Somhow, I could never forget my Michiru (sailor neptune) doll (sill looking for her :()
Then I saw a pulp for the first time...and it all begun

    16. I don't think I ever hated dolls before and I was usually quite careful with them. I also especially loved it when they had moveable limbs because it just seemed to allow them to do more stuff. I never ever thought of cutting their hair off at all and breaking them was the last thing on my mind.

Growing up with sisters, it's no surprise that we would have all sorts of "girlish" things. I know my favourites were the Polly Pockets and a Chelsea doll that me and my sister played with quite frequently. I know I really liked the PP whose hair changed colours when dipped in cold water and it was just so cool. However, my parents bought more fluffy animal plushes as time went by but I only ever hugged them to sleep or played with with my sister. The barbies and Polly pockets were just a lot more interactive since you could actually dress them up and play with without need of company.

The only dolls that freaked me out were the interactive baby dolls that have their eyes staring at you large and wide eternally, just..watching you, and porcelain baby/kid-like dolls. I still don't really like chubby child-like dolls, thanks to the doll horror stories...

BJDs are different though, their eyes are beautiful, plus the moveable limbs. I guess that's why I got drawn in to BJDs, though I did find them creepy when I was younger. Now I'm just slowly planning, searching and saving up for my first BJD.

    17. I hated dolls as a child and preferred different toys and stuffed animals. As an adult, I love the artistic nature of bjds and how many creative outlets they can inspire :)

    18. As a child I loved dolls! I collected barbies, bratz, fashion dolls, baby dolls, and littlest pet shop (though they're really more toys). I never really grew out of it, I suppose I got embarrassed that everyone was done playing with dolls and I wasn't when I got a bit older. But now as an artist (hobbyist) I can really appreciate the time and work that goes into dolls themselves, it's kind of nice.

    19. I've always liked dolls ever since I was a little girl. :) I always played with my Barbies and made up stories and adventures for them. My interest in dolls sort of faded though when I reached my first year in high school, though not completely because I still admired photos of a bunch of different bjds well into my late teens. I went back to full-blown loving dolls when Ever After High dolls came out and I started buying those, and they lead me to dolls like Pullips (which basically take over my entire doll collection, I find them to be absolutely adorable), AI dolls, and Hello Kikipop!, and of course, all of those have opened the door to bjds now.

    20. for me, I always loved dolls (the more poseable the better) but my mom always ever got me bratz (which don't get me wrong I loved) but then I got to the age where I was "Supposed to grow out of them" so I got rid of them all (man do I regret that now that I've gotten into faceups) and I remember always cutting their hair, adding "makeup" via markers and such, and sometimes I even took off the factory paint (I found out that nail polish remover worked when I was trying to fix a mistake I made on one of my "Makeup" escapades). But anyway, my friend from canada posted occasionally about bjd's and recently we swapped instagrams (we've been friends since like 2010 ish maybe more), and after not having seen anything about dolls in a long while, her dolls popped up on my feed, and one of my other friends was talking about a friend she had that customized dolls, so it kinda got stuck in my head, so I started looking up doll customization because how cool would that be, and bjd's kept popping up, and now I'm in love and saving for one so yeah.. I mean like antique, and some porcelain dolls creep me out but mostly, I've always loved dolls :D
