Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I never hated dolls but I wasn't into dolls at all when I was kid. If anyone called my action figures dolls I would correct them. So at worse I thought dolls were for girls.

With age my mind changed on dolls being just for girls. I only have two toys I would consider dolls. I have wonder woman and catwoman barbie dolls both of which have never been outside their boxes. So I'll probably never be into dolls to the point I dress them up and changed their outfits. When I get my dollfie and smart doll they will probably live forever in a glass case. But who knows maybe I'll get a itch to change their outfits since they wont be in boxes.

I think I got the barbies when I was in my mid 20s.

    2. Oddly yes, as a child I hated dolls. I came into bjds through anime. They closely resembled the art styles and I just fell in love. Volks Shiro T ver. 1 tokyo boys collection did it for me.

    3. Well I never hated dolls, but I didn't like them much. I think I've stated on another post that I was never really a fan of dolls, and more enjoyed things like Hotwheels, Legos, etc. I was a tomboy. Still am. I became captivated by the beauty of BJDs after Googling them and adoring their pretty faceups and sculpts. I decided they'd be a focal point to my artwork, and from there I decided I would take the plunge one day and actually order one. My initial plan was to use my BJD for art poses, but now he's my best friend. ^-^

    4. As many of you here i used to dislike dolls a lot because i found them ugly. you know, soviet dolls mostly depict little kids, and i never liked how they look -_- i wanted beautiful adult dolls
so i had to play with stuffed animals) at least they were cute
later my sister had barbie and i didn't dislike her that much but i didn't care. i didn't find her beautiful either, i only liked that her hands and legs could move and she had different clothes. I knew that there was also a man so i found Barbie's boyfriend, but Ken was much uglier to me and that felt like a huge disappointment.
I never thought of dolls many years since then. If i had a chance to see bjd i am sure i'd fall in love because that was what i wanted in dolls even in my 5-10 years, but the place i lived in didn't have a clue about bjd existing.

So i turned to a 2d adorer since early school years and decided to be an artist when i grow old. Now i think that late is better than never, so i finally can say the thing i couldn't say until last year: i DO love dolls. i always did, i just didn't meet the dolls i could love, but they existed.

    5. I loved dolls as a child, even up until my early teens, actually! I mostly had barbies and bratz dolls. I remember how hard I saved my paper route money to get my first Maplelea doll haha! (The Canadian equivalent to the American girl doll). I loved dolls mostly for making characters and creating stories for them. I eventually lost interest in them, and they all went into storage.
I found out about ball jointed dolls when I was about fourteen or fifteen and of course immediately fell in love with them, but I never thought I'd be able to afford one. But I saved my money and eventually decided to get one when I was about seventeen, and I've been obsessed with these beautiful dolls ever since ^^

    6. I wasn't really into dolls until I was maybe 8 years old, when I got into American Girl. I'd had Barbies before but never cared much for them and always preferred stuffed animals and building toys. I think American Girl had to be the start of my doll-loving. I asked for a doll or some furniture for every Christmas and Birthday until I was like... 13?
TL;DR I never hated dolls, but I wasn't super into them as a young kid.

    7. I really liked my Barbie, but I hated how stiff she was. I was jealous of all the joints action figures had. I use to tell myself I would create a better version only to find out that they already exist.

    8. To be honest, I didn't like most dolls. (My aunt has a doll collection that used to scare me when I was little, and I was terrified of nutcrackers so dolls fell into that category for me.) I was more into barbie dolls and Polly Pocket (I was a proper little girl ) Then I started to desperately want a giant collection of American Girl dolls, which I only ever got one. But these dolls have pleasant-looking faces and that's what does it for me! Although I wish they were a little more expression-able, in my opinion.

    9. I played with dolls my whole life and was obsessed with anything Barbie. I also had Bratz dolls but didn't care for them as much. I played with Barbies until I was 14 years old. What's funny is that my version of playing was to actually set up the doll house with all the props and then play house for a bit, but the fun part was setting up everything and organizing ^^ I had an American girl doll, and a My Twin doll too, but still Barbies were my number 1 lol

So then when I was around 14 or 15, I was browsing around DeviantArt and saw my first BJD and I was in awe *.* I told myself one day I shall own one! Back then it was too out of my reach, so now at 24 I bought my first one and I couldn't be happier~ I wanted to photograph them because I've always loved photography and I thought having a BJD would be an amazing subject, and boy was I right I can't get enough!

    10. Yes, I hate dolls, because they cost me too much money each year. ;)

    11. I feel this on a spiritual level LOL :D

    12. I had no interest in dolls as a child. It was always my younger sister who had Barbies and such. I was more into monsters and scary things. It was almost three years ago that I got into dolls because of an anime convention I went to. They had a meet there and I had no clue what BJDs were so I went to see. From there, I fell in love, much to the confusion of my parents.

    13. I have always loved dolls and could never figure out why others didn't. I mean, "what's not to love right?!" I have drastically changed the types of dolls I have collected as I go... first being baby dolls, barbies, then porcelain collectables, Tonner dolls, and now finally bjds.
I still don't know why more people don't collect dolls. :)

    14. The dolls available to me as a child, and as a consequence my whole mental image of what a doll is, caused more aversion than interest. I never thought that there was something else behind the horizon... BJDs are still the only type of dolls I connect with.

    15. I grew up with Bratz dolls and hated Barbie dolls- by the time a was 10 I pretty much hated all dolls. A few years later I got regular access to the internet and discovered art dolls and fell in love! I could never compare BJD's and dolls like Monster High or Barbie because they are all works of art~!

    16. I loved Barbies when I was younger - until I didn't and thought they were creepy. I also played with American Girl Dolls but didn't like that their eyes opened and closed, so they're in my attic somewhere. I hated dolls for a while, but I love BJDs!

    17. My mom would always bring me home porcelain dolls when she went to furniture shows and stuff, they would have them there. I think I had a total of 7 at one time. As I was only 8, I didn't really need to be collecting something so fragile.

    18. I used to dislike dolls as a kid, mostly because they were either babies (ugh) or barbies. I never was interested in playing a mom, and Barbie her smile was just so... plastic and fake? (Fake emotion creeped me out. It still does.) I couldn't project any sort of character or story onto her, which is interesting because at the time I was capable of even projecting characters and stories onto rocks and shells :')

    19. I actually always loves playing with barbies when I was little, and would always have so much fun dressing them up. This is probably why I like bjds, and I first found pullip, and then Fairyland dolls about 5 years ago on the internet.

    20. Lol, to be perfectly honest (and in my own personal opinion), rocks and shells have more personality than Barbie. They come in so many different shapes and colors, and, until fairly recently, Barbie only came in one boring shape:lol:
