Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I never really liked dolls at all. They were so pretty and girly. But I love customising BJDs, because I enjoy arts and crafts. Also, all my dolls are boys, so I can avoid all the frills and pink!

    2. only time I played with dolls was when I made them jump from great heights in daring dives, climb mountains, basically just insane adventures! I never dressed them though, my mom did that, I didn't really care. Their hair always was a tangled mess too!xD I preferred my cars, plastic animals from the zoo, and Lego!

I actually only got in to this because I liked a girl that was into it. I ended up getting more into it then her though! They are so much better then normal dolls, you can make them into their own characters! : D

    3. I always loved dolls, I mainly had barbies complete with a mountain of clothes.
I also had a Chrissie doll, it said her hair grew, and I suppose in doll fashion it did, but, I cut it then was horrified when it didn't grow back. That experience dampened my love of dolls for a while I gotta admit. I was horrified!! :x

    4. I've always been afraid of dolls, but for some reason have never had a problem with BJDs. I think I need to get a vintage porcelain baby doll (preferably with no eyes and limbs missing) to get over my fear.

    5. I actually used to be scared my dolls, but when I first saw BJD they were beautiful. I like them much more than the weird American baby doll with the eye problem in my parents room. LOL

    6. When I was a kid I definitely had dolls and I never hated them! I did, however, hate the porceline doll that my grandma bought me once. :sweat And honestly, I'm still not a big fan of them! However, I had plenty of barbies and other dolls when I was a kid. My favorite were the dolls that went with my dollhouse, which I played with for a very, very long time. I think I liked them most because they had a whole house and place to live, so it was easier for me to create stories about their lives and personalities.

Once I got older I lost my interest in dolls until I went to a convention that was otherwise really boring for me (I had been to a lot of great anime cons, but it wasn't one of them). However, someone at the con had a BJD table and I fell in love. I spent that summer researching BJDs and picking out my first doll, then impulse-buying another.

    7. I always love dolls. In my childhood I used to have many different dolls to play and never abandoned them. I just changed the way I used to play and the dolls.

I think I first met with bjd's when I saw some dolls customized as my favorite j-rock artists, after that I started to search and learn more about this dolls and after 3 - 4 years I was finally able to buy my first bjd.

    8. I was terrified of dolls when I was a kid, but those were the traditional porcelain dolls like from the Annabelle movie. The first BJD I ever saw was on DeviantArt and it was just so different from other dolls. I just fell in love. I think I had my own bjd within a year.

    9. I LOVE dolls...., did I say LOVE, I meant I WORSHIP my dolls!

I got into dolls young because I love fashion design & hence I play with "big" dolls in my job as a Visual Manager now!!

    10. I would have expected everyone here to have always liked dolls! Fascinating!

I've had dolls for as long as I remember and never hated them. I mean, the creepy porcelain ones or that weird face style that was popular for 1960s dolls? Definitely not my thing. Dolls with poorly painted faces or unnerving proportions can sometimes give me the creeps, but in general I've always loved all kinds of dolls.

    11. I've always loved dolls. Ever since I was a kid. I never escaped them throughout my years. They've just gotten bigger and more fancy.
I loved collecting Disney barbies especially.
Now I have two BJDs, a third on the way, a BJD dragon and a Fairyland Momo on layaway.
Oh, and a pissed off boyfriend because I've got myself into debt with my hobby. But, he collects bikes, so I don't feel too badly about it.

    12. I played with barbies as a kid, but I also had a lot of other toys like action figures, cars, figurines, and legos. I liked my barbies but I wasn't super into them. The only thing I hated as a kid and still dislike are baby dolls. I don't find babies to be cute, so dolls sculpted to resemble them creep me out. I don't judge other people for having them, it's just not my thing. I think what attracted me to BJDs is how elegant they are. I also find the artistry that goes into them to be very inspiring.

    13. I used to love dolls as a child, I had Barbies and playmobil's that I loved to bits. Then I was told I was "too old for dolls" so I stopped playing with them.

recently I got into BJD's when I saw how exquisitely beautiful they could be! Now I can't get away from them!

    14. I loved dolls as a kid, since they were a huge medium of entertainment; I could make up all kinds of stories with them. But because of that my parents never got me any videogames because they thought I wanted dolls the most when I really wanted pokemon stuff and videogames! I liked the dolls for a different reason though back then, and I wasn't afraid to be rough with them. I also drew a lot, but at the time I didn't know how to communicate a story through drawing, so I used dolls instead. As I got older I couldn't rely on pure imagination enough so I stopped enjoying playing with the dolls. Most people know the saying 'too old to play with dolls', and that's how I felt. It was kind of depressing to see my childhood put to permanent rest in boxes, left to sit in the basement and be forgotten. I wouldn't say I hated dolls at that point, but I felt mostly indifferent about them, if a bit sad that I couldn't bring myself to care about the things I used to when i was a child. There's something strange about acknowledging the fact that some of the most important things to you just don't matter anymore, because you've become a different person.

I got back into dolls a little later when I realized there was a different way to appreciate them: BJDs! The BJD hobby, with its garage kit roots, is an entirely different way to treat dolls and instead view them as interactive art. I love it.

    15. I liked dolls a lot as a kid...but it took a lot of years before I could articulate exactly why. And it wasn't the dolls themselves, it was their stuff! Clothes and shoes and cars and houses, I was crazy about dolls who had lots of stuff to allow me to recreate, in miniature, what I thought a glamorous life would be like. The dolls themselves were just props to build sets around. Once I realized that, I kinda fell out of love with dolls.

BJD were the first dolls that just really charmed me for themselves, with their props and accessories secondary.

    16. I was always super into dolls and action figures. I really liked the dolls, but my favorite was all the accessories. I love building things with my hands and creating things so this aspect of the hobby really spoke to me. I had (badly :sweat)built many a dollhouse in my day and it never occurred to me to build just rooms. (I'm having lots of fun trying to engineer collapsable rooms with built-ins and sneaky furniture storage.)

It's funny, though, I always preferred dolls that had almost no articulation. I wanted more of a mannequin that I could make clothes for it. This hobby really did introduce me to the idea of photography+ dolls + setting and I am obsessed with it at the moment. :blush

    17. I didn't hate them, I was more so afraid of them and mostly because I'm a avid horror movie enthusiast. Doll horror movies have always made me jump. But I got past the fear and have come to own one of my own (and the second is on her way). Dolls are gorgeous

    18. I loved dolls from a young age! I played with standard kids dolls, but also my grandmother built dollhouses from kits and made yarn dolls that I loved to play with. I would also buy new (if cheap) dolls weekly until about age 10 from our local dollar store. I was mostly interested in the fashion and storytelling aspects, and still am.

    19. Nope. I've always loved dolls. All the dolls. Endless dolls. I have 50+ OT dolls accumulated from ages 1 to 18 and a still-growing antique doll collection that started in high school (it's up to 14 now, all but 2 from before 1920). BJDs are yet another way my dolly adoration manifests itself. :D

    20. There was a short time where I didn't like dolls. I had a small collection of Bratz dolls that I kept hidden as a teen. My grandfather found them and flipped. He's the greatest man, but you have to understand he's really old school. When he saw me, his grandson, had dolls, he was embarrassed for me.

So I lied and told him I found them at a park and was going to sell them online. I ended up leaving them out on our patio because I felt so ashamed. I couldn't even look at dolls for YEARS. Not until I grew comfortable collecting action figures.

Turns out my grandmother has my dolls. She found them outside and saved them, along with all my best grades, paintings, and anything else.
