Did you hate dolls?

May 15, 2010

    1. I had my good share of barbies when I was a child (I had like six of them and a box full of clothing) and I stopped playing with them when I was around 10-12 years old. From that moment on, I think I wasn't really that interested anymore.
Plus, in my family and my environment, playing with dolls after a certain age was not appreciated, so...
In my teens, I purchased some anime figures, but not for playing, just for displaying, or not even that cause I kept them their boxes. And, when I met BJDs, puf! I felt as happy as when I was a child again.

    2. Wow, I'm surprised so many of us disliked dolls when we were little!
I hated ordinary Barbie dolls, but I liked Kelly dolls (Barbie's little kid sister and her friends). I had a few boy and girl 'kellies', and they used to go on imaginary epic adventures rather than play dress up. But I preferred to play with animal toys mainly.

Later, I had some Bratz dolls, but I only really liked the boy ones. I just couldn't relate to those bratz girls with their love of makeup and fashion!

    3. I don't think I hated them... but I wasn't ever fond of them.

I had dolls as a child, but they were more my mother's decision than my own. I was disinterested in them, and preferred to play with plushies and cheap little plastic animals. I remember my mom got me an American Girl doll when I was young, though, and I was terrified of that thing. The eyes have close to no scleras and they're too round, so they always looked like dead fish to me.

I still find most dolls like that really creepy. I think I just don't share the concept of "cute" or "pretty" that most western doll manufacturers have in mind.

In high school I got really obsessed with doll-themed horror movies (Child's Play, Puppet Master, even those doll and dummy-themed tales from the crypt or goosebumps episodes worked), probably as sort of a rebellious rejection-of-childhood-femininity thing. But I think that backfired, since it actually ended up making me appreciate dolls for the first time. Blade from Puppet Master was my doll mom awakening, he's so damn cute I just wanted to hold him the entire time I was watching. I started out with Living Dead Dolls, and it was a slippery slope from there.

As for BJDs, my sister got one as a birthday gift when she was really young and I despised him. She was like 8, I have no idea what my parents were thinking. He's a Volks Ken, and at the time I thought the idea of a blank doll for over $200 (an incomprehensible amount for me at that age) was disgustingly extravagant, not to mention unfair to me who didn't get gifts anywhere near that expensive. I'm still not fond of him, though, so that wasn't a judgment of BJDs so much as a judgment of him in particular. :sweat

    4. I was pretty fond of them as long as they had semi-realistic adult proportions (baby dolls I hated, but Barbies and similar dolls I loved). I had a very strong preference for the more mobile ones, because it just bugged me that the normal Barbies couldn't sit naturally or bend their elbows etc. This childhood frustration actually played into my decision to get a BJD quite a lot!

I do have a pretty serious phobia for dolls with less realistic proportions or ones meant to look like children, like traditional porcelain ones or even American Girl. I accidentally watched one of the Chucky movies as a child, so eh, yeah. Was not and am not a fan of those, unless they are specifically used to be creepy (Halloween decorations!).

    5. When I was younger I hated Barbie dolls because the lack of color representation. Now I love fashion dolls oddly enough due to the amount of diversity now available. I only use to play with baby dolls when I was younger but now as an adult I do not feel the need to go back to baby dolls since children are ick to me.

    6. I have always been mad for dolls. I especially loved any with extra joints. BJD was a dream come true.

    7. I remember my mom telling me that I used to hate dolls when I was a little kid and that if she gave me one I would throw it violently into the corner of the room.:o To this day, it still shocks me that I used to be like that and that now I am extremely careful with my bjd(soon to be bjds).

    8. Never and never will

    9. I was never really into dolls when I was little, I liked more detailed figures than the typical dolls for kids are. I always liked miniatures and articulated models, though, so I think that's the angle that bjds got me with.

    10. When I was really little, I did prefer action figures and stuffed animals over dolls. I’m not sure what exactly didn’t appeal to me. It stayed that way until I was about 7 when my sister got her first Barbie, then I really wanted one! And when I was about 12, I started repainting or adding to fashion dolls to change how they looked. I longed for a customizable doll, then found BJDs when I was probably around 19-20 and it was love at first sight.

    11. I didn't hate dolls as a child, but I always preferred playing with animal figures. When I saw BJD's for the first time I was stunned on their beauty and how realistic they were.

    12. Nope! I’ve always loved dolls, ever since I was a baby. My favorites were Barbie and American Girl- the latter only for their outfits, since I preferred “lady dolls” to child dolls. I was kind of the opposite of a lot of comments in this thread- stuffed animals couldn’t hold my interest for very long. I had them, but they always ended up boring me. They were just animals, and animals are nice but they can’t be dressed or posed, and you can’t imagine them doing all the interesting things people do.

    13. I heard from my mom that I despised dolls as a really young child lol. When I got a little bit older, still a child, I loved them. I grew out of my regular play dolls at the usual age, but one day I discovered the beautiful creations that are BJD's and fell in love aaalll over again

    14. I ALWAYS hated dolls.
But since I've gotten in to highschool and saw these BJDs from a friend, I always thought of owning one. Now that I'm almost 30, I revisited the idea of dolls, and quite frankly I jumped right in. I do clothing designs, I am fair at art so I know I can bring to the community something, faceups, tattoos etc. Even if its little. Also because you get to have your characters live with you and not just digitally? Was the main lure. Then it was also my business side and being in the US- that I believe that rammed me to grab the dolls quickly because there aren't a lot of designs I have seen in the doll world that matches the real world. Yea, Some unique, albeit but still lacking. So I am aiming my business into launching clothing accessories, faceups and clothing.

This would've never occurred to my 6 yr old me. I loved ninja turtles and I was a tom boy. I hated dolls. They were too feminine but now i kinda see them in a different light.. now I'm sad I didn't get in to the hobby sooner. damn PRIDE got in the way lol!

    15. Interesting topic! Yes, I hated dolls so much before I was 20. Then I was just suddenly into this hobby in my 20s. However, I only like dolls with small eyes, many other dolls still freak me out.

    16. Hmm! I wouldn't say I hated dolls, I think I was rather indifferent of human dolls when I was young. I was obsessed with anything animals and had a My Little Pony collection and stuffed animal collection, so the few barbies I had weren't really played with at all. Toys were hard to come by growing up, so I was still thankful for whatever I was given as gifts from other family members if they happened to give me a barbie. Although I was about 9 years old when I desperately wanted an American Girl Doll, mostly because all my friends had one, and it was hard for my mom spend that much on a doll for me haha, but she ended up buying one for me. Sadly I got my AG doll right at a time where all my friends grew out of playing with toys, so I tried to force myself to grow out of it as well (but I truly never did, haha). Then after that I discovered BJDs on the internet, so I think my appreciation of dolls grew even more.

    17. I preferred stuffed animals and action figures over dolls as a child. I didn't really have a big collection of Barbie or Bratz and I didn't play with my baby doll much. Maybe I had too many options.

    18. Yes I'm the same way, I was a total tomboy when I was a kid and I hated dolls! I thought they were too girly. But I always loved mechanical figures, like robots and marionettes, so I think BJD's are more similar to that, maybe that's why I love them so much today?

    19. I played with dolls until age seven or so, but I always preferred stuffed animals. I do remember pining over the American Girl dolls though. So many accessories!

    20. I wouldn't say I ever hated them. I put them down as I focused on surviving and pretending to be an adult. But I never stopped loving dolls. These last few years I have been collecting a bunch of off-topic for customization and was finally feeling secure enough financially to make such a purchase.
