1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Did your FIRST doll come with a faceup?

Dec 16, 2013

    1. My first girl had no face up. I bought her head 2nd hand (maybe 3rd, it's been so long I can't remember). I did her face up and had to do three tries on it before it looked the way I had envisioned :)

    2. My first doll came with a faceup because it was only ten dollars. My second doll and the two on the way (yay for birthdays!) are barefaced and I'm SUPER nervous about making them up. Hope it goes well!

    3. My first doll was I prize doll I had won.
She arrived with a very beautiful face-up by the artist. But after 2 years, it had chipped and worn off in places. I decided to re-do if a few months ago and interestingly, the doll has felt more 'mine' since then.
I do the face-ups on all my dolls, it was only her who was the odd one out for a long time. I must say I prefer painting a doll myself because it can infuse the sculpt with my own ideas and interpretations.

    4. My first doll was second hand so he came with a faceup but he was old so I had to get it redone. I do tend to order dolls that already have faceups done though.

    5. My first doll came with a faceup from the company that they allowed me to make some custom requests on. I think it was important for me that I didn't have to worry about that aspect with my first jump into the hobby. My second doll was bought second hand and came with a faceup. No dolls since have come with a faceup, for saving costs and to let me try and practice myself. Unless someone is very artistic, I think I would recommend getting a factory faceup or one from an artist you like. It's more expensive, but I think it lets you relax and ease yourself into the hobby!

    6. I wanted a very specific look for my first guy, and so I ordered him without a face-up and looked up face-up hints and resources in the meantime--a scanty pool of resources in those days! A decade later, and I still prefer getting dolls without a face-up. I love getting that look I want, even if I have to have several tries before I get it just right. I don't want to say it's part of the bonding process for me, but it does sometimes help solidify a character, or give insight to the personality that I might not have had otherwise.

To be fair though, there is something awesome about getting a doll that's ready to go right out of the box. XD

    7. My first dolls both have factory faceups. Maybe someday I'll spend the money to get a custom one done, but I'd need to find the right artist first.

    8. I did the face up on my first doll. I wanted to do something different then what the company had, and it didn't even cross my mind to have someone else do it.

    9. I did it myself. Doing the faceup was one of the things I was the most excited about in terms of getting a BJD, so I ordered my first doll without a faceup. :D

    10. My first dolls came with faceup. It was big disappointment for the very first time: the guy was quite different from the promo

    11. My first doll I got second hand and she has her factory face up. She is a Fairyland Chloe FeePle.

    12. I began looking at tutorials and joined a BJD forum months before I bought her, so I was never worried about doing a face-up and I had something precise in mind and I wanted to save some money. So I ordered my first doll blank but the factory made her a face-up by mistake and I ended up with a free face-up. The thing that never actually happens in real life. I was very happy of course!

    13. My first doll was Mini Gem Aren Nyangi Punky from SOOM and she came with her default face-up ^__^

    14. My dolls are all characters, and as a result, I tend to have trouble with the company faceup. Unfortunately, I'm not much of an artist, so the learning curve for a realistic faceup has been huge. We'll see if I can ever reach the quality of company faceups.

    15. If I were to attempt creating face-ups I might as well go ahead and buy a creepy clown doll (think Stephen King's "It"). Yup, I am that hopeless when it comes to anything involving artistry.

So, I'm buying my dolls with their respective company face-ups, but like another poster said, I will likely get custom face-ups sometime down the road, such as when the company face-up starts to get old, cracks, or I decide on a different look/character for a doll.

The only problem with that is that sometimes the company face-up is not really my style, so that places some initial limitations on things. But, the longer I'll be in the hobby the more I believe I'll be able to figure out who takes commissions for what at which point in time, so I can order a doll without face-up and send her on right away for a custom.

    16. No, my first doll didn't come with face-up. I sent her head to a friend :)
But I want to learn how to make dolls' face-ups.

    17. I have ordered my first doll to come in with a face-up, because I don't have any artistic skill at present. However, I have several other kinds of doll heads and supplies and I have every intention of learning. It may take a while (long while) but I can do my own make-up so with effort and frustration I should be able to do hers too! :)

    18. Yes, she did, and she still has the original company face-up to this date. I prefer buying dolls with face-ups. :-)

    19. Mine came with a factory faceup

    20. No, she doesn't come with a face up, because I made my own face up on her...it is more special...I think so...
