1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Did your FIRST doll come with a faceup?

Dec 16, 2013

    1. Oh no, my first 4 dolls had no face-ups. And at the time the only face-up tutorial I could find featured very expensive Japanese pastels which, for lack of further knowledge, I ended up having to order from Japan. That was in 2008 and now I know that the pastels that the top notch art store around the corner here sells are also usable, but still I'm not sorry I bought that Japanese set way back when because it's no where near run out. But I did get a few extra colors from the art store. And some nice pencils. And some great paint. And brushes, hmmm, brushes. Did I mention the art store was top notch? Really, don't go in without a small bag of money. Ah, temptation!

IMHO I make an okay face-up. And that's okay by me; not everything in a hobby has to turn into a million bucks. As long as I like it, it's good. And it's different from a pro face-up or a company face-up. Both of which I have on my newer dolls.

No, I'm not sorry I had to paint my first dolls myself, even if I was in a panic over it at first.

    2. My first doll came with default faceup, so did my second one. I tried painting on a skull cap just to see how resin took paint and decided I needed more practice. I got an inexpensive head and worked on it several different ways. I'm still not as good as the pro's but I can modify my default faceups now so that they aren't generic. My practice head is now a wild animal and I love it.

    3. my first doll come with face up~
but the make up is really terrible so i do it again T T..

    4. My first doll came without faceup and I gave her many faceups then the 4th is what I think will be her default

    5. My first doll came with a face-up, which I think is perfect for her. Which is good, because I have zero talent in that area. I can't even put make-up on myself without looking like a five year old did it!

    6. My first doll came with a custom face up as I got him 4th handed? >.<
I didn't really like his face up at first but have come to like it...

I might send him for a custom face up once I have decided on his personality..
But I think it would be great if I could do his face up when the time comes, so I bought a head for practicing face ups right now.. ^^

    7. Nope, but my first doll was an Obitsu Haruka, who just didn't come with one. My first attempt at a faceup was on him, and wow did that go just a bit wrong ^^; He kept that faceup for ages though, my trying to find just the right artist who would paint him. He has a custom faceup now :3
My second and third dolls didn't either, due to the fact the characters they were for were of a hairless race, so having them with eyebrows and eyelashes painted on would have just looked really strange. My fourth, a second hand Bobobie Cookie, came with the default faceup, my first properly faceupped doll ^^

I can't do faceups myself though, so I have a few dolls that still need them done. I tend to concentrate all on one doll at a time though, so I have to wait until I have enough money for everything for that doll before I send them off to get painted usually.

    8. I ordered my cheshire without a faceup. He is still without one while I research different sealants and wait until spring to order them. My second doll is going to have a face up though unless it comes with an option not to have one. I love the idea of being able to do it myself.

    9. Mine came without a faceup because I was impatient and wanted to order sooner(I was saving up). She was also a floating head. I haven't really bonded with her as much as I did with the new head I gave her body to, but I'm thinking of using her as a practice head for my first mods, since I don't have to worry about ruining a faceup- because she doesn't have one! Weirdly, I think this will be an opportunity to bond with her more. On a side note, once I got her, I was considering having an intentionally faceup-less collection... but that's another story.

    10. No my first doll didn't have a face-up - but he was a Simply Divine Thomas, they're one of the companies that just don't offer that service.

So yea he was saddled with my poor 1st ever attempt... Which was further hampered by having to attempt blushing due to resin matching issues since I ended up receiving a body (separate company and dealer and entirely my own fault) that really wasn't the right skin tone!

But the experience did encourage me to continue practicing, since it wasn't really that difficult - I just didn't have the right set-up when I painted him the first time around (I'd been painting far smaller models and heads for a while before I got into bjds) Yeah with one notable exception I've now painted all of my bjds face-ups and fully intend to keep at it since I'd hesitate to say that I'm actually good at it!

    11. Mine did, because I thought I wouldn't be good enough at doing faceups to be satisfied with the result, and I wanted to enjoy him and take nice photos for a bit! After a couple months of owning him, though, I did add to his faceup a bit and added a bit more contrast. Mmm, after a while, though, I really wanted to try doing my own faceups, so I wiped him yesterday and tried to give him one today. It didn't work super well, especially because of some sealing issues, but I think I'll try again in a couple weeks when I go home again :D It's been fun making him my own!

    12. My first BJD didn't have a faceup and I spent a few months looking at faceup artists. So he was blank for quite a little while. But I was very in love with his sculpt and was just so pleased when he got eyebrows xD

    13. My first doll--IH Chase--just arrived last week on Valentine's Day, and yes, came with a face-up. Mostly I like it, except for the brown lips. I've been collecting materials to do my own face-ups and have a floating head on order on which to practice.

    14. I am still waiting for my first bjd to arrive...and I did order with a faceup even though the idea of doing face ups is so cool...but I don't wear make-up either so am afraid that my lack of make-up knowledge will make doing face ups go horribly wrong too :)

I have played around doing some face up work on a few of my Blythe's but is very basic...and I'm not entirely always in love with my Blythe's (I think some of the customs I have seen are adorable!) so doesn't feel like quite as much of a loss if it goes horribly wrong ;)

    15. I don't wear make-up either, but I don't feel it's stopped me from doing face-ups. I'm quite familiar with about a dozen art techniques, but I feel none of that has helped me do a better face-up. I'm thinking that face-upping is a stand-alone technique and you really don't benefit very much from previous knowledge; you have to learn this from scratch.

So, I can recommend trying face-upping. Get a second-hand head or a budget head to practice on. Take lots of photos and don't be afraid to mess up big; that's how you learn.

    16. I think one day I will try it but definitely with an extra head first :) I tend to be crafty but rather enjoy the doll I chose because of a company/custom faceup and enjoy practicing on a separate head ;)

    17. My first two dolls did come with default face-ups but my third I got blank. She is currently with a face-up artist now as I have no interest in doing my own face-ups.

    18. My first doll had the factory faceup but had specks of her cheeks scratched off so I ended up wiping it off. A year later and many failed faceup attempts myself and she is still faceless. After a year in this hobby I realized I like custom faceups a lot better than the factory. I haven't sent any of my dolls in yet to anyone as they are either difficult to get commissions and with hopes that I would improve on my faceup ability to do them myself.

    19. My first doll was second hand and had a face up her previous owner did, I removed it right away and did it myself. it was terrible XD
after some practice I think I make okay face ups.
now I do all my face ups. I got the feeling I bond better with my dolls if do.

    20. No. Back then, I couldn't afford a face-up for my doll so I had to do it myself. It was a disaster. :sweat
