Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Did your interest in resin BJDs lead to an interest in other dolls as well?

Apr 15, 2011

    1. I started to get into pulip dolls and chibi dolls hehe. I started to watch animes more again its great :D

    2. I got into BJDs as a result of Pullips and Tonners. I still like my Pullips/Taeyangs, however it's very difficult for me to handle my Tonner dolls after holding and working with BJDs. There is virtually NO weight in the doll, and the posing is horrendous. I'm not even picky about how my BJDs pose (Soom Amber can barely stand upright, as some may know from experience) but I still love her all the same. Tonners just plain frustrate me, but I can't bring myself to sell the three I have since two didn't retain their value very well. After BJDs, I don't want any other type of doll!

    3. I've heard the same from other fashion doll collectors-turned BJD collectors. I myself find it difficult to be interested in non-BJD dolls. I go to a doll club, where most of the other members are interested in Tonner, Ashton Drake, Madame Alexander dolls, and antique dolls and the like, but I always just smile and nod when they discuss them or show them.
Sure, they can look pretty, but to me, they are just not as complex and/or intricate enough to hold my interest. I mean, the first time I saw a fashion doll, I was like "Wait, you mean you can't change their eyes? Their hair is rooted in? Oh, wait, that joint doesn't move, does it?"
I'm also not interested in Barbies, or Monster High dolls for the same reason.
While one can customize fashion dolls, it is much more difficult to do so, and always more permanent.

With the astounding amount of customization in the BJD hobby, any other doll just can't cut it for me.

As far as Pullips, while they may be more customizable, I'm mainly not interested in them because I don't really like their aesthetic style.

    4. I've started to become interested in other kinds of dolls as well. Mostly Pullips, Dals and Monster Highs, but I'm looking around for all kinds of dolls. To be honest I just enjoy having something pretty to put in my livingroom, and brand doesn't matter. If it's cute, I'll buy it. I'm also into figures (anime or super heroes) but that might be a bit off topic for this thread. :sweat

    5. Other dolls lead to my interest in resin, I had antique ball jointed dolls before ABJD.

    6. Actually iy was the other way around for me as well. I started with Barbies when I was younger and ended up with some of the collectable ones. I also had AG dolls including their girls of many lands but nothing will ever fit what I want as well as resin so I doubt I will ever get into other dolls :)

    7. It's the other way around for me. I loved Barbies, baby dolls, and porcelain dolls when I was little. I started collecting plushies as well. BJD is just another part of that. :)

    8. From the time I was little, dolls have been a big part of my life, starting with the original Barbie (just gave away my age!), coveting my older cousins' Ms. Revlons, and a huge love affair with paper dolls, too. Being blessed with a daughter, I was able to continue with my joy of dolls through buying for her, and threatening her with dire consequences if she cut any of their hair-which you know she wound up doing! I found Ellowynne first about three years ago and from there learned about resin BJDs and the rest is expensive history. I think this genre of dolls offers the ultimate-and the possibilities for creating whatever you want is so totally endless; speaks to the artist in me.

    9. Nope, and it's doubtful that it will to be honest. I did however have an interest for Bratz dolls when I was younger, but that has long since passed.

    10. Yes! I 'outgrew' dolls for a long time, but BJD's became a form of self expression for me and let out that inner child that I pushed aside. I am interested in am starting to eye-ball other dolls that I can move around and pose such as porcelain and OOAK artist BJD's.

    11. Curiously, while my interest in Blythe dolls led me to finding out about BJDs (since many Blythe owners / fans seemed to be into both), now I uncovering boy Taeyang dolls, which are very much like boy versions of Blythe (a development I'm quite happy with! :D ).

    12. not at all, I never collected dolls or had the interest to do so before I found out about BJDs and I have no interest to do so now
BJDs are the only dolls for me

    13. BJDs, then I got more into Dollfie Dreams. I had a Pullips at one point, but I honestly don't care for Pullips. BJDs are really heavy and I find that I prefer the look and feel and everything about DDs (except staining of course!)

    14. Like others above, I have been into dolls for years but have mostly Phillip Heath, Himstedt, Heloise, Maja Bill and the like so BJD's have come my way courtesy of my daughter. I love them all and I think the artist dolls can be an investment and perhaps BJD's are more designed to be played with and enjoyed. For this I love them because it means you can have a ton of fun. I cant wait to get my girls as i'm sure it will just the start of a new diversion on this expensive but very rewarding hobby.

    15. I collected kelly dolls and Monster high dolls and that kind of lead to this! I still collect monster high and am interested in also pulip and Blyth. I just love dollys

    16. Yes! A love of traditional dolls (porcelain, American Girl, Japanese geisha) led me to BJDs and now BJDs have led me to art dolls. I always thought art dolls were interesting but now I find the different styles fascinating. I'm particularly fond of ooak porcelain bjds.

    17. I've been collecting various kinds and sizes of fashion and character dolls for a while now. BJD's are actually a new thing for me. I have two 1/4 Miro bodies on the way but no heads so far. Given my budget generally doesn't run to resin dolls I decided I was probably going to have a pair in MSD 1/4 size. It made sense for me to go there as I have a lot of Tonner stuff and my (OT) AD BJD's are that size and that way I will have clothes and all for all of them. I'm used to making clothes for 12" and 16" dolls mostly so keeping to that scale is practical for me. Likely as much as I'd love to have an Iple doll pair I'll only end up with these two. But then again that's what I said when I got my first vinyl BJD's too. I thought two of them would do me and now I'm up to six, lol. It's probably a good thing that resin dolls are more expensive to own or I'd probably fill up a whole wall with those too, like I have with the rest of the crew. :P But no, the BJD's are a result of the other dolls, a progression, not the other way around.

    18. I've always loved dolls. I started out with Barbies and then discovered BJDs. I don't buy any other dolls besides BJDs,but I do like dolls such as Tonner fashion dolls,Wilde Imagination,Obitsu and Pullips. BJDs also got me into other things made out of resin, such as figurines.

    19. Yes; after I started collecting BJDs, I started looking into other dolls as well. I never cared much for dolls in general, but after seeing a ABJD for the first time and finally buing one, I felt like other types of dolls ended up becoming more interesting.
I've liked Begoths for a few years and now I have three in my small collection. I also own several Monster High dolls, and really like J-Dolls (which look like the resin BJDs), although I only have one of them.
Many of my friends like Pullips, Dals, and Blythes, but I could never warm up to these ones.

    20. I was a doll/toy collector long before I discovered Asian BJD's and then subsequently various BJD's/art dolls from outside Asia. I started collecting dolls when I was around 16 years of age and still do to this day and i'm a woman in my 30's. So yes it was the other around for me. I took a short break from the hobby when I started college and packed all my toy & doll collectibles away but once I discovered the internet (in particular auction sites) and had my own computer I soon ended up collecting again...it's just me, no point in trying to stifle the person I really am even if it is frowned upon by many others who "don't get it". :huh?:
