Did your preferences change from MSD to SD, and why?

Jul 12, 2021

    1. I initially planned to get an MSD doll (for cost reasons lol) but found most of the sculpts I'm actually drawn to are SD.
I do like the more mature aesthetic that SD sculpts have. Of course there are more mature "MSD" sized dolls now but at this point I don't have plans to change my collection to MSD.
In terms of YoSD, I really like the size and portability. But if I only ever own my current YoSD I think that's good enough haha.

    2. I began with MSDs exclusively because I’m big into displays for my dolls, and I feared SD size would overpower the spaces I was working with. But later I discovered even more spaces for display, and some of those actually called for a larger scale doll for the appropriate presence needed. So I happily branched out into SDs. And of course, along the way, I needed smaller dolls just to fill in gaps in my display spaces. So today, I have a happy crew with great size diversity, which makes me oh so happy!:)

    3. I don't really have a preference. I like all sizes and have a mixed crew. I feel that each size offers something that the other sizes don't and I see it as a reason to have them all. I love the diversity in this hobby.

    4. I´m planning to buy my first BJD - MSD sized one. I´m not sure when it comes to size. I can´t imagine very well how big SDs are and how are they different from MSD. I don´t know which size I´ll prefer.... I guess I will have to see myself

    5. I started with MSD and after about 3 years, I discovered that I liked SD so much more. At the time, there was so much more sculpt diversity in the 1/3 range and as my characters are all adults, 1/4 was just too childish for the most part—this was long before slim minis were popular. I also found a lot more mature clothing and shoe styles, and felt wigs looked more in scale and not so bulky. Lastly, I love the size and weight of SD. They’re unlike any play line dolls and really feel more special to me.

    6. It would be great to hear your opinion when you'll get your SD ))

    7. I think of YoSD as Barbie size and MSD as American Girl doll size (or other similarly sized dolls).
For SD, I found it helpful to look at photos of people with their dolls (example) as I couldn't find any dolls nearby that were comparable. People are not really joking when they say SD is around 1/2 your height! (I think its more like 1/3 though haha).

However, looking at owner photos won't tell you the weight and a Resin doll can be heavier than expected! I recall hearing you can expect something like 3-5 pounds for a 60-70cm doll.

If you can, going to a meet to see other people's dolls is also helpful :)

    8. Thank you, now I get the idea. From what are you saying I see YoSD are not for me, they are too small. But wow I didn´t expect SDs to be that big! The picture really did help. They are really nice... (but heavy!:sweat) I would love to see other people´s dolls! (That might be a bit of a problem in my country though... I think. Well, I hope I´ll find some BJD fans. :))

    9. When I was in high school the first time I began, I had a littlefee as my first and wanted the bigger sizes. I got both an SD and an MSD and honestly hated both sizes for their own reasons!! I tried to get back into dolls with another YoSD years ago, and I wasn’t a fan.

Last year I finally got back into the hobby with an MSD and I thought he was the perfect size!!! If I had a bigger house I would have more SD’s, they feel more like an extension of myself.

In summary: I thought YoSD’s were god tier in grade school, but now I love every size! :)

    10. For me it's mostly the fact that most of my characters are... older. Much, much older than the average doll character it would seem.
Just to give you an idea, most of my SDs have characters between the ages of 40 and 50 (save for the two that are meant to be teens, 16 and 19), and the one doll I have left on my wishlist is for a character that's 56 and the oldest of said lot. Keeping that in mind you might be able to understand why it's so impossible to find any MSDs that could work with my lot...

That's not to say I don't still have MSDs. Despite the massive sales I've been doing a few new ones still have managed to make their way into my home, whether because I fell in love with a sculpt, or because a friend was letting go of a doll that I have always loved and could not let get sold to someone else...

    11. Most of my collection is MSD-sized and I didn't plan to do SD, but then I had a chance to get a full-set of my grail doll (Volks SD Tae 2nd), and then I did end up with some SD-sized dolls. As others have said, I find the MSD size easier to handle (especially for photos) and to store away, but the SD size dolls are very impressive looking and easier to sew for.

    12. I started with 60cm SDs, and that size is still my favorite... But over the years I've ended up adding everything from a 4cm Micro to a 75cm heavy-weight giant to the crew. Let's say that my tastes became very diverse, size-wise.

    13. My very first bjd was an MSD. At that point, MSD was the only size I was familiar with, especially as I was still very new to bjds and had only ever seen another MSD in person before getting mine. I also mainly collected Pullip dolls at the time, so that's what worked for me.:)

Admittedly, it didn't take long for me to lose interest in bjds after getting that MSD, and I ended up taking a several year long hiatus before deciding to come back into the hobby. At that point, I was drawn towards picking up some SDs to shell various OCs of mine, and just generally ended up finding that size range much more appealing. The size, heft, and ease of faceup mods and sewing clothing for are what made me prefer SD+ more than MSD, and I never really looked back.

All that said, I do have a couple MSDs (I sold my first doll, so she's not one of them), but I don't plan to get too many more of them. Maybe the twin brother for my one girl, and a guy friend for my Lumedoll Atik. That might take a while (if I ever get around to it), however—as I engage much more with my larger resins than my two MSDs.

Also—regarding smaller sizes...they have no appeal to me. I'm not really into childlike dolls, and many smaller scale mature minis just look too similar to action figures in detail that I'd much prefer to just invest in customizable action figures at that point. I'd be totally up to eventually acquiring a cat bjd that could be in that scale, but beyond that—I prefer my crew to be on the larger side.:kitty2

    14. I started the hobby in highschool so price was a pretty big component of what dolls I got. For that reason, most SDs that I wanted were just out of my price range. My collection was pretty much exclusively MSD for the first bit but the second I got my hands on an SD I was in love. I really love the sculpts available in that size and the more mature look of the faces/bodies. I also really love the size and presence of SDs.

    15. I started with pullips/dals then an sd13 boy and sd girl. Got an msd body but had to wait on the head which I’m waiting on. Now I’m interested in yosd and lati/pukifee sizes.

    16. I moved from MSD to SD and never looked back. While I still love my two MSDs, I like the solid feel of the larger ones, particularly the boys. With smaller sizes, I'm terrified I'm going to drop them and they'll break. My friend has a Yo and I'm constantly scared of holding her. Also, the larger boys tend to have more of the aesthetic I like rather than the wide eyed cuteness of the smaller sizes. Nothing wrong with those, of course, I just like the mature style more.

    17. I had pretty much the same experience as this!

I was originally into 1/6 and 1/12 scale non-BJD dolls like Monster Highs and Azone PureNeemos. Although I thought BJD were rather gorgeous, I thought even an MSD was way too big, and I didn't like that there were almost no mature Yo-SD sized BJDs available.

I almost bought a Little Monica mature Yo-SD sized BJD as my first doll, but held off on the purchase due to not liking the sculpts available for their mature 1/6 line.

It was when I discovered Minifees that I started warming up to the MSD size, and lo-and-behold, I now own my first BJD, a Minifee!

I've come to prefer 1/4 scale over anything smaller now, and I still find SD a bit too big for my tastes. 1/4 is a nice sweet spot between the two.

    18. I don't really have a preference. I started with 1/4, but currently I have dolls ranging from 4.5 cm to 72 cm, and I would love to one day own an OAD 90 cm boy.

    19. I started with 1/6 mature tinies last year, but was struggling to find scuplts that I really loved.
I was worried that msd would be too big for me. However, I recently received my first msd boy and the size is actually great. I think now I would like to try an SD doll in the future too.
