Different in Heights

Feb 16, 2010

    1. I adore differing heights among my dolls and for couples it's an absolutel must since I find it very visually appealing. Although it appears to be the minority in this particular thread I personally have no problem with 45/60 pairings so long as the dolls look proportional together and are photographed tastefully, especially since my favorite doll couple I own fall into this size couple bracket.

With my current crew as well as planned future dolls as listed in my sig I like to think I have a pretty good variety and range when it comes to heights (43, 45, 47.5, 56, 56.5, 58, 61, 61, 61, 63). So while my mode is obviously 61cm, having 3 out of 10 sharing the same height is not bad in my book, especially since none of them are paired up with each other.

    2. I would have loved to keep them all the same size (Except those that were supposed to be shorter like kids and such) but its really hard to get the doll you want with the size you want and still get everything else (Clothing, Shoes, etc) still fit them.

So I do not mind anymore. If I can get them to be the "right" size then Yay! for me, if I can't, well too bad xD

I'm not too much into big size difference couple though... I have a 42cm and a 60ish cm and I do not really like having them too close to each other because the 42cm really looks too small XD
Maybe its only the proportions though.... xD

    3. For couples, I actually like a moderate height difference (60cm and 65cm, or 63cm and 70cm)... but a height difference of a 43cm and 60cm looks too proportionately unbalanced to me for a couple, especially when taking photos.

That being said... for siblings or "friend" relationships I have no problem with varying heights, and actually prefer them. ^_^ I actually have a set of siblings that includes two Minifees and two 60cm dolls.

I figure, in real life a random sampling of people is unlikely to be the exact same height and body shape... so why not have that variety in my dolls too?

    4. I like varying heights, real people are different heights too. Most of my dolls are based on my OCs, so their heights need to match. I have a Zaoll Muse and a MD Ryu/Flexi Perennial couple, one is 52cm the other is 64cm, pretty big difference. But, in my head, 52cm translates as 5'2" and 64cm as 6'4", just like the characters, so it works. XD The only doll who's height I'm not nitpicky about is my Minimee, the person is only 5'8" and the doll is 62-63cm, but the head would look absolutely ridiculous on a 58cm body since it's so big. XD

    5. None of mine are the exact same height, but I choose their heights in relation to each other. Not all of my dolls come from the same story line so they don't have to necessarily look "right" together. However they need to look right in their story lines with their companions. I'm very picky about my dolls fitting the characters I'm trying to create. They need to be the right height in relation to each other. Aric is taller than Killian by several inches, so Aric the doll is taller than Killian the doll. Noble is very very tall so it is ok that he is a 70cm doll in a group with primarily dolls ranging around 60cms but also a single 43cm doll (the character is very short because of malnutrition as a child) and a couple of tinies who are children in the story line.

    6. I like to have variation in my dolls' heights and sizes, depending on how tall the dolls' characters are supposed to be.

When it comes to couples and some other male/female pairs, I actually prefer a big height difference, though not so much that it is impossibly out of scale. My 55cm girl is being paired with a 62cm+ boy, and the height difference is substantial but not too much -- she's 5', he's 5'8". Similarly, I want to get a 70cm boy to be my 58cm girl's younger brother, 'cause she is supposed to be petite and dainty and he is supposed to be well-muscled and well over 6'.

But when it comes to most 100% platonic pairs, I like variation in bodies but height difference (or lack thereof) isn't that important to me so long as they are in scale with my other dolls.

    7. I don't care about height differences, really - if the doll's predominant look/spirit/is-ness/ etc. is just right for that character, then his height falls by the wayside. I have a 6'2" character who's 62cm, the same height as one of my 5'11" characters; who, in turn, is only 1 cm taller than one of my 5'8" characters (they're all SD13s).

My only concern with heights is about storage. ^^

I also tend to bristle when people gripe about height-differences in couples because the girl doll is too tall; as though all heterosexual females are short and dainty & only mate with tall partners. :P Taller-girl couples need love too! And I know this is a shock, but not all real-life couples are different heights, at all... Plenty of people mate with other people who're the same size.

    8. Height doesn't really matter to me. I'm not putting any characters into doll form or anything. I just buy dolls that I find really pretty, give them a name, a personality and have fun. The only reason it would matter is couples, but I don't do couples here.

    9. My doll "family" is all over the place height-wise, since I've bought each doll because I like that particular doll, and not because it had to fit in with anybody else. Sooooo - I have a 10" 4-year-old and a 13" 2-year-old; fraternal twins that are both MSD's but different heights (which would be normal for IRL fraternal twins); a 13" 10-year-old and a 14" 18-year-old... I guess the two 13" dolls would be the weirdest together - 2 years and 10 years, same size.:?... The size differences don't bother me, though.

    10. I don't really mind what heights my dolls are- they're school kids, so it's perfectly normal for them all to vary in height. My unoa Morghan for example, is a lot smaller than my other two MSDs, but it just sort of works for him to be that way, it's actually quite endearing. I personally think it makes groups of dolls look way better and more realistic if they vary in height.
EDIT: I do however prefer to make some significant age difference between MSDs and SDs though, because I don't like having dolls of different scales posed together.

    11. Amen! Preach it sister!

    12. I plan dolls of all different sizes. However none of them will really cross their 'size category' and form a couple. A lot of people are fans of SD/MSD relationships and I, dare I use such a strong word, hate them. I've nothing against those who like such couples but for me it's just wrong and their is no way to justify the fact that it looks like an adult standing next to a young child to me.

However I don't mind 70/60 couples... and I think that comes from their actual sizing not being so unrealistic in proportion to each other. It looks as though one partner is smaller or a few years younger, but it doesn't look like a child paired off with an adult.

    13. Slight height differences don't bother me, but if there's a relationship then I don't think I'd want a mini with a SD sized doll. The faces just have a different look to them maturity-wise that would bother me.

    14. Thank you everyone! The more I read about your personal preferences I am starting to get an idea of what I want out of my dolls. All of you are so helpful, I really appreciate your opinions.

    15. Height does not matter. I only have one couple and they are the same make of dolls, so they "fit". All my others are individual characters. I plan on getting smaller dolls in the future (a Puki Puki to be exact) even though most of mine are 60cm and one is 80cm. I do seem to be attracted mostly to the bigger adult/teen dolls not the babies or children.

    16. My characters' heights are all over the place. And I prefer it that way. I don't mind different height in dolls and in fact, I seriously take height into account. My friend's character, Zak, is 6'4" at least, where as my character, Kate, is 5'3". I'm 5'3" and when I stand next to a person over 6', they basically tower over me. That's why Kate is a 58cm doll and Zak will be a 70cm.
It's the head proportions that bother me, but I already know the proportions are okay.

I have really tall characters, and a very, very short character. She's 4'11", though it's not due to dwarfism, but because of a growth disorder and malnutrition that stunted her growth. Anyways, that's really short, and I plan on making her into an MSD (or maybe about 50cm, I haven't decided), but she will not be part of a couple.

I think the biggest problem with heights is storage. With dolls interacting with each other, different angles or tricks of the camera can fix that (in some circumstances). But my Sphaler hybrid, who is close to 70cm, has to sit on the top shelf in my closet rather than the cabinet (for lack of a better term) where my other dolls reside. I have no idea where I would store an 80cm doll X__X

    17. I'm picky about heights for my dolls with regards to couples. It needs to be right (or as close as I can get it) to how I've written them.

I have an MSD/SD couple because that's what the size difference that their characters are would translate to. Moswen is 46cm (6'-3" in story) and Kijika is 58cm (7'-0" in story). When they're next to each other, the top of Moswen's head reaches about breastbone level on Kijika.

Jolen (44cm) is slightly taller than Kys (42cm) and that works for them as well story wise although jolen could stand to be a little taller to be 100% correct to their story.

    18. All of my dolls are varying heights. Not all work in the same 'world' so to speak, but when I do have them in the same 'world' or want to photograph them together, they have to be of complimentary sizes and scale.

My friend and I have a doll couple where the girl is 5cm taller than the boy ;D We think it's adorable.

    19. I don't mind have different sizes of dolls, but if they are a couple the height definitely depends. I don't want one of them to look completely like a child while the other looks like they are a tall adult. So it definitely depends. As long as the size difference isn't realistically impossible or makes it too weird.

    20. oh the delemia I had with this one....my first BJD (kurogane) is a 45cm doll...which actually worked out well cause I wanted him the 'tallest' of the bunch...the second (Fai) I got as a 42cm to be a little shorter. Of course then the trouble started when I wanted my girl shorter then both but not chibi short like a tiny would be....35cm seemed about the right height so I actually went around browsing for the perfect doll at that height....which of course I found the the Little Junior at 35cm....*sigh* It would be a whole lot easier if I hadn't been so picky about sizes.
