Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. Well, for me, I live on 12 in an apartment building on the east coast. The only real natural event or emergency that could happen to my building would be a hurricane or a fire, and the hurricanes aren't that bad.

In case of a fire, I think it would depend on when it happened (i.e., in the middle of the night while we're sleeping). If it was in the middle of the night, I would worry about my parents and my cats first, because at that time, it would probably have gotten pretty bad before I woke up! If we caught it early enough, then *maybe* I would consider taking them.

As for obesekittens's comment on the doll not being your own, I would say that if this person was truly your friend, they would be more concerned about you!

    2. Depends on how much time there is available, I suppose. Of course family would come first, then, if there would be enough time I would certainly go back and try to save my computer, books, doll.
      Although, honestly, she's usually 20cm away from me so, just next to my monitor so.... xD;
But again, I'd only go back if time allowed it. Not keen on risking my life if the whole thing was up in flames no matter how heavy the damage was, and I'm not referring just to dolls here.

    3. It depends on the type of disaster..... if it was ahurricane where I had plenty of advanced warning and time topack, YES!! If it was a fire or something sudden, I doubt I would have time....the 3 P's first.....people,pets and papperwork! :)

    4. Sister, pet snake, then dollz, ^.^ very interesting topic, hehe

    5. In the event of a hurricane our dolls would go into water tight pelican cases. Not sure where to put our kids though. ;)

    6. I'm probably very lucky-- the worst weather Maryland has ever had was a tornado warning a few years ago that got pretty violent, but no damage. And I've been living here all my life, and thats all I can think of ._.; MD is very uneventful even in terms of weather.

If the house caught on fire...well, it depends on where the fire starts. My room is like my sanctuary and I am very emotionally attached to almost everything I own. There are so many things in this room that I know I would cry over if they were destroyed. Everything has sentimental value to me.

I would make sure my family, dog and fish were out first. No doubt about it. But as soon as they were out, depending on how big the fire was, I'd go straight back to my room and start tossing things out the window. It's only a 6-7 foot drop. Nini would be fine as long as she is in her pillow and box, the drop would probably be nothing for her. Next comes the laptop, tablet, violin, books, other porcelain dolls, all of my very personal belongings (diaries, all of my hand-written information on my dozens of story ideas), DEFINITELY my portfolio...desktop motherboard (the monitor can go ahead and burn xD)...whatever clothing was expensive, ugh, I could keep on listing things forever. But I would not jump out that window myself until the fire reaches my bedroom! xD

    7. All that lives with me right now are 5 bettas...I'd do my best to grab them, but because of the nature of them (I can't toss them all in 1 container or they'd be dead before they were out the door) I don't know if it'd make sense to try and get all 5 of them out. I'd probably grab things of sellable value like my laptop and dolls, my folder of important documents, my purse or wallet (whatever has my ID), my cellphone, and my journal (I have about 9 years of poetry in there and it can't be replaced!) The dolls are pretty low on the list. I guess the list would go: Laptop, journal, documents, wallet, cellphone, dolls. And if it was a slow evacuation (well, slower than the 5 minutes you have to react in the case of a serious fire or tornado) like a hurricaine, I'd grab the fish and the dolls definitely. And if I was at home or with other livings critters, be they human or other critter, they'd definitely take priority...even if I didn't like the person.:sweat OH! And my little 8 year old bonsai tree definitely takes priority over anything right now!! That guy has survived EVERYTHING, no way a disaster is gonna take him from me.

    8. Yikes... I don't like thinking about disasters, but - I would grab my two bunnies and depending on how severe the disaster was, I would then grab my dolls - or at least my favorite dolls... :sweat

    9. I'm doing what I can to prepare for one of the types of disasters we get around here, but that has more to do with keeping my dolls from breaking. Earthquakes can be nasty and they can't be predicted.

As for a fire, my daughter and husband have priority, followed by the cats. I'll grab the dolls if I have time, but things that live are most important. My dolls are basic molds and wouldn't be too difficult to replace, just expensive.

    10. Well, obviously I'd want to make sure everyone in the house, including my beloved cat were safe, but if I could, I'd definitely grab my dolls, considering they're the most expensive things I own.

...But, yesterday we had an earthquake, and, even though it was innocent, I thought it was going to be bigger than it ended up being, so I took a dive right under a table; and I felt so guilty that I left my Doll who was RIGHT next to me. So now, I really don't know what I'd do in that specific situation. Hopefully I don't have to find out.

    11. I'm living in a house, not an apartment, and I only have one doll, so yes, I would take my doll with me XD
My brother would certainly make sure the cat is safe, he did that last week, when we had a small earthquake

    12. It really depends on the situation.
Family and pets always comes first and then would be my workstation.
I would carry my workstation and my favorite doll at the same time:)

    13. My top priorities are my husband, ferrets, photos and then my dolls.

(We had a house fire when I was little, and lost all of the family photos... so now I know how important they are.)

But you can bet that I'd be trying my hardest to get back for that last run for the dolls.

    14. I guess it is hard for me to say. I'm in Florida; Hurricane Alley. Been through a few. We have mandatory evacuation each time. Lives would be first, then photos (can't ever be replaced) then the dolls. I have a lot of fragile dolls (not bjds -- really hard to pack those) -- I leave them during an emergency. With bjds I could (if I had time) grab and go-- so if I had time, I'd definitely want to take them. Whether I would or not would depend on how much stress and emergency was happening. House fire would be the absolute worse. I shudder to even think of that. At the same time I would look at the bigger picture and be grateful to get out alive.

    15. The only real natural disaster that affects us here are hurricanes and so far the worst we've had (for these past 19 years of my life) was Isabel. It came close to flooding the house and did flood the shed. The wind was any more than 100 mph but if one stronger than Isabel came along we'd have to leave but i'd have time to pack all my valubles, dolls, sentimental objects, cash, and chinchilla, so i don't really worry about that.
Fire is different though. I'd make sure my parents and sister (if they were home) were ok and aware of it then i'd get the chinchilla and maybe grab what i could that holds value (sentimental then monetary). I'd definately grab my dolls if i could.
We also have the occasional tornado watch/warning, especially in spring. If one were to touch down in the county i'd grab my dolls, other sentimental stuffs, and wrangle the chinchilla into his carrier (in whatever order) and hide in the closet. I'd rather be at work though.. huge walk-in steel coolers make me feel safe!

    16. I'm not far from where the Beechworth/Mudgegonga fires hit. That was the scariest thing ever. I don't think I slept at all while the black saturday fires were going on, I was too scared they were going to sneak up on us. The sky was pretty much black there was so much smoke.

Anyway, because the fires were nearby, but not close enough to us for us to evacuate, we were able to pack just in case. While mum got the photo's together, and clothes and stuff she wanted to take with her, I was in my room trying to squeeze all my books into a couple of bags. At this present point in time, those are the one thing I can't live without. I didn't care about clothing, I just wanted those books to survive.

Thankfully we only have two dogs pet wise, and those are pretty easy to get into the car. People wise there is mum, me, my brother(18) and my 3 sisters (one 13 the other two are 2 and a half). So they were pretty much able to sort themselves out (mum bot the younger pair ready).

The fires never did reach us thankfully, so all my packing wasn't needed (took me several weeks to get my books back in order). I think because a doll is so easy to move, if I had the time I'd definitely throw it in the car. (still saving up for my first doll)

When my sister lit a fire outside my room all I could do was stare at it. All my books were against the wall that the fire was burning on. Thankfully our CFA got the fire under control before it caught onto the house, but I didn't even think as to what I wanted to save if it had of taken down my room.

For all my levelheadedness, I freeze up when an emergency arises. Either that or I full out panic.

    17. If it were a fire, my dog and cat would be be saved first. Then I would go back in for my dolls, one or two of my antique liquor bottles, and my Xbox.

    18. We had a bad storm recently, the tornado siriens were going off, for the most part those don't mean much since but I still did a quick check in my head bout what I'd grab and June was on my list, but it was mostly cause I was the only one in the house, my son was at his dads and my boyfriend was at work(i did call and check on him though) I do beleive I would have tried to grab my dog and 2 cats and bunny then my June along with photo albums and such. I have considered insuring them though, they are pretty valuable and hold theyre value pretty well. *shrug*

    19. In a house fire I'd probably through my dolls out the window and onto the grass after I got my animals out:)

As for a hurricane,my family would make sure our clothes, emotionally attached items, animals and other important stuff are in the car so I have time to worry about how I'm going to pack up my dolls nice and safe ;)

    20. If I had time to pack personal belongings I would pack them too, but there are a lot of more important things to consider first. My family, my dog and some other belongings that mean much much more to me(stuff from my grandparents- my photos and photoalbums). My dolls would come after that. So, if I didn't have time to pack I would leave them. I would be incredibly sad, but they are only dolls and even though I love them they are not as important to me as other things I have.
