Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. On my way to class Tuesday my mom called me and said that there was a wildfire headed toward my house and they were forced to evacuate- she asked me what I wanted... I said my clean clothes, my dolls, and my lolita. My BJDs definitely make the list.

Thankfully my house was spared, but I was so glad to know my dolls were safe while the wildfire burned my backyard. >_<

    2. As long as the living things get out ok (my family and the cat) then yes - my dolls will be the first (and probably only) thing I will rescue. I don't have a lot of nice things, so probably my Genki Gear tees will come too (if only cause I have a couple of hundred quids worth of them now, and some rare ones they don't print any more :XD:) but other than those things... meh. Everything else is easily replaceable, or virtually worthless anyway. Hell, if I had time I'd rescue their boxes too.

    3. I thought about this and fire....here in CA....if I had to leave a home and couldn't take all the dolls I might just dig a really deep hole in the back yard and bury them ..in case the fire burnt the house down....
another worst case evar, wrap them in something watertight and sink them to the bottom of a pool??????
      we're talking desperation here..
also some people have too many dolls to just pick one up and flee

some people would get insurance if there was a fire but it wouldn't replace the dolls fully
      and then not emotionaly either

I hope I never see that day

    4. i'd take them with me -- so far i just have a Puki and a 1/4 girl, and if it was at night i could grab them as i rolled out of bed -- that's usually where they are, is on my nightstand.

    5. I'm terrified at the thought of such dangerous situations like that... No doll yet, but when I get one I'm pretty sure I'd take him with me after my dog (and makin' sure my mom and bro were alright). Hell, I'm pretty sure I'd take him with me everywhere and never let me leave my side.

As it stands now however, I have too many books, games, and other treasures to be concerned with, but never over the life of friends and family. Of course there was time I'd plan to get all my things out safely, but if not... *shudder* Fortunately, or unfortunately as the case may be, I am one of those paranoid people that has an inventory (photographs) of treasured possessions just in case though. So as long as I could get my camera (or even just the card) all would not be completely lost. (And my computer files are backed up on my memory stick which is usually more like an extra limb to me.) Things like, manga, games, and the like are easily replaceable. Photographs, or customized/rare BJD and other special things, not as much I think though so I wouldn't blame someone for wanting to make sure those were safe in the case of an emergency.

Then again, things are things, as much as we like them. It's not like we would be able to take them with us if we died tomorrow. Sure would be nice though. *laugh*

    6. I guess it'd depend on the nature of the disaster and the amount of time we'd have to prepare! Of course family members come first, that's obvious. Then important ID papers and whatnot, then stuff. I think of all the valuables I might have the dolls would be the most durable of them, and the least likely sort of items to be looted. I live in Seattle, and the only disaster I can think of happening to us would be something involving a volcano. Mt Ranier blowing? Maybe an earthquake? Even so, we probably wouldn't need to evacuate, but anyhow. Actually a few years ago an escaped bank robber holed up in a trailer in a neighbor's back yard, and people were evacuated from surrounding homes, but that's different, we were all able to return pretty quickly.

    7. I would make sure to get out all people/pets first. Next would be purse/passport etc, laptop and then probably my BJDs if there was still time.

    8. I'd definitely try to get them out...after making sure that all my family members are all right and don't need my help. I my mind things kinda go like this in an 'ideal' situation: Dad takes the important papers (make sure that he gets them quickly), Mom takes her ferret (and she offered to take one doll with the ferret^^), Brother takes his bearded dragon and I take the dolls. If any of them needs my help I also get their task, too (at the expense of my dolls...but living things are more important^^)

    9. I've had this discussion with my sister, actually. xD
I think we both agreed that after the family and cats were out, the dolls would be next on our list to save.
However, I'm pretty sure that I would grab them as soon as I heard about it and just run around with them in my arms. XD

    10. I would probably list the dolls in a disaster like this:

      Humans > Pets > Important Documents/Pictures > Dolls

Now if it was a choice between starving or not, food would go before dolls. I mean I'm not gonna starve myself for dolls and they wouldn't bring in any money if the world was coming to an end or something.:eusa_pray I pray this never happens of' course.

    11. I know my family would get out of a disaster along with me so ... after my cat, my dearest dolls will definitely be my priority ... I know they're not alive but they mean the world to me so ...

    12. Thats really close! Thank you firefighters for saving your house! We need to celebrate.

Now to unpack all my dolls and other stuff from my car now that the evacuation warnings are over!

    13. Well, first I'd take the dogs and the fish, then I'd go get my relatives and any dolls/other personal belongings I don't want to lose. If I had time anyways, if I didn't have time to go get them I wouldn't prioritize the doll over the others, although it doesn't mean I wouldn't be sad about it.

    14. Living on the Gulf Coast with Hurricanes...I empathize with this. I am originally from PA, so I never had to worry about this.
Last year we had to evacuate...the first thing I packed where my boys and all of their clothes. After that was all of my media...CDs, DVDs, & Books...after that...everything else. The van was PACKED.
There would be no way I would leave anything in my home if I had the chance to take it with me.
If I had to go at a moments notice it would be the dolls & their clothes (most def.!)

    15. People have been mentioning the fires and there have also been some earthquakes recently that led me to realize that I'm totally not prepared for a disaster so I thought about it for a while.

Things I would take with me, in order of importance, are a change of clothes, maybe a granola bar, my phone, my backup hard drive (where all my photos since i was a kid are stored...priceless stuff), my bag of journals I wrote when I was a kid, and then my dolls.

They may sound far down the list but while they are very important to me, they are still replaceable, whereas I can never get those photos or journals back if they are gone. So yeah, they are in 3rd place as far as non-survival things go.

    16. If something like that happened, like if a tornado was coming, my dolls are conveniently sitting next to my bed so I would probably just grab one of them. However, if the police were on a ladder trying to get me out of the house, it would endanger my safety if I had a doll in my arms. Aka it depends @_@
Hopefully I'll never have to think like that! Dx

    17. I honestly don't know what I'd do. My first priority would to make sure everyone else, the pets and myself were safe.

If I had to evacuate and was given time, all my dolls would be packed, along with my computer and a few other memntos from childhood. Clothes too if I had time. I know I can replace other things in that room.

In an imedite emergency, like a fire or something, I'm not sure. Agian, first priority would be those who are living. And then you can bet I'd grab things that were importat to me. I don't know if in a situation like that I'd grab my dolls though, it depend on time and where my head was.

    18. Honestly? My laptop first because it has all my stories/poems/art etc on it and I need that stuff. Then my iPod. And my duvet. I love my duvet. And my wacom graphics tablet. And luckily (in this respect) I don't have a doll yet so I wouldn't need to think about it!
*afterthought* oh, I suppose I'd make sure my family and my doggy are OK too :)

    19. Hmm................. well I'll probably take the biggest doll box I have and throw all my doll-clothes and dolls in it -carefully, of course-, close it, dress myself in what I can very quickly find, take my iPod and my cell phone and then leave with my parents and my dog, with the aforementioned big box with us. XD I'd NEVER let my babies behind.

    20. I would probably take my doll with me.

Knowing me I'd bring the ones I know I won't be able to replace or afford later. That would be my laptop, camera, Ipod and BJD
