Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. I'm kind of paranoid about things like this so I always keep my purse, a pair of pants, some shoes, and my doll right next to my bed. That way if something happens I can just jump up, grab these things, and run out the door. I don't have any children and my parents are both able-bodied so I'm able to focus on just my personal stuff.
      If it was a long-term evacuation of course I would bring my doll and if short notice I'd try to grab her as well. Obviously it's a little easier for me to do this because 1. I have a tiny and 2. I only have one doll.

    2. I suppose I would get my dolls, but first thing I would do is to pick up my bunny. This is maybe twisted ^w^ but I think I would grab a very large bag and stuff my bunny and the dolls inside and run ..... urgh I wish I will never have to do this now >.<

    3. Definitely get out loved ones, then pets, my computer. and then grab the doll if time allowed. But the living definitely come first:) I live in an apartment complex. so I would focus on people and children definitely first :)

    4. I live in a dorm. I have too many dolls to carry them all, honestly I don't know what I would take. But since I have no pets and live alone, I might try and stuff my backpack with dolls, but really I think I'm more the type to not grab anything but my purse. I mean, I can't buy a new life, right?

    5. I would make sure my husband was out, then my cats, some water and survival food, then maybe my favorite jewelry.
      Carol

    6. Safety first. As long as that's established, then I'd go for books which isn't very practical. If I had more time, then I'd get the dolls too.

    7. I probably wouldn't take my dolls :( Lives are more important. I would have to get all my pets out, which would take a while, so I wouldn't have time time to get my dolls out. Dolls are replaceable, lives are not,

    8. I think I might make an effort to get them xD;
      As long as all humans were out first. I don't have much stuff, really.

    9. I was NOT in a fire....but I did have a situation recently where I ended up putting doll safety before my own. it's the wet season here and so the ocean is packed with jellyfish and the possibility of salwater crocodiles is always high in this area. I had one of my dolls on a rock and it fell back before I catch it...into the ocean. I sat for a good five minutes looking for crocs and trying to decide what to do before sticking on a bunch of full length clothes and going in to fetch the doll. In retrospect it was a fucking stupid idea! But I only got on jellyfish sting on my hand, and doll is safe at home....

      In a fire, I'd probably still stupidly go for the dolls. Or musical instruments. Or something.

    10. As much as I want to say "Oh, this and this and this would come first and I can always replace dolls!" in a life-threatening situation, I have to admit dolls would be high on my priority list. Granted, it would be a "grab the carrier and SHOVE THEM IN!" kind of thing, with pretty minimal regard to how well-packed they are. We've just gotta make it to safety, I can re-arrange them while I'm waiting for the shock of "oh god DISASTER!" to set in.

      Priority list would be people, cats, dolls, books, and then anything else we could grab. We've got a lot of cloth shopping bags, including a nice soft cooler-type, that we can just grab and shovel things into, and this is one of the reasons I want my kitties leash-trained -- it's easier to clip a leash on a frantic cat's harness and drag it outside than it is to find the carrier and throw him in.

    11. I live in Miami so hurricanes are very common. 5 years ago we had back to back hurricanes, 3 as a matter of fact. I packed up all my dolls each time and took them to my sisters, ALL my dolls, not just BJD's. It was very cumbersome but I figured I'd be safe rather than sorry. My family thought I was nuts!!! luckily, I' have since downsized to just BJD's but my answer is "Hell yes, I will take my dolls with me" !!!! ;)

    12. If I had the chance, then yes, of course I would.
      My family and pets are far more important of course but nevertheless, if I had the opportunity to save a few material things, my dolls would definitely be among them.

    13. Probably not, dolls would be pretty low on my priority list, which might go something like this.

      1. Family and any other humans who might be affected (for example, neighbors it's its a natural disaster of some kind)
      2. Pets
      3. Antiques and heirlooms
      4. Photos, files, computers and the like
      5. Any other possessions (including dolls).

      I love my doll (currently singular), but I still consider dolls (with the possible exception of very rare limited editions) to be a replaceable possession. I can get another doll, but there will never be another portrait of my some number of greats grandmother from the 1890s, or the china that's been in my family, or the baby photos of my relatives.

    14. >.< My sister and I discuss this all the time!
      I live in California so we have frequent earthquakes, not to mention I live in an old apartment D:
      Last time someone almost burned down the building and all I took with me was my keys and my cell phone :(
      (of course I don't have any dolls at home yet) but the fact that I didn't even think twice to take other things like my brand new laptop, just kind of said that although I would like to take material things that are important to me, I would be in such a rush to get out of danger that I wont be able to :(
      I even ran out of the house in my pajamas >.<

    15. I would say that immediate family/friends and pets would be top priority, next would be my books or antiquities the rest will be covered under insurance since I would like to have compensation on items that are lost and damaged from fire/natural disasters. Electronics and dolls could re-bought with insurance compensation. You can't put a price on human lives at all, especially if it's someone you love.

    16. So true ^^
      I agree, I would save my family first before anything else!~

    17. I happen to be the only living thing in my house. No siblings/roommates/pets - I've got a plant on the front porch (for now...), but as far as fleshy bodies go, I'm it.

      I also happen to live in the most RETARDED APARTMENT EVER. There's only one way in and out (front door/window on the same wall of the front room), and I'm 2 stories up over concrete if I want to try and bust my ass jumping out the bedroom window. Add to that, the window does not open, so I couldn't add a little "emergency ladder" to it if I wanted to. It would be a "bust the glass and jump" manuver. Nothx.

      So, in the event of a fire, I'm probably gonna scorch myself getting to the front door, so I'm wrapping up in - ta-da! - the fire-resistant blanket I keep in the bedroom.

      My dolls are always on one side of the livingroom. If that's the side where the fire is, so long $$$ resin and computers and TV, I will miss you, but I will not try and save you. I will also be in trouble because I'm certain Renter's Insurance probably does NOT care about dolls. :p However, if the fire is in the kitchen, you bet I'm gonna swipe them up into my fire-proof caccoon before I scuttle out the door.

      In the event of an evacuation, if I'm at work when I get the call, that's TS for my resinites. But if I'm at home, I'll snatch them and stick them in my bag, np.

      Let me add that my most valuable posessions are (in order) ME, my computers, my dolls. I don't have any family heirlooms to worry about, I don't have any antiques- I am a world traveler, but I'm more inclined to pick up knick-knacks than fancy/priceless souveniers, so really, I don't have too much in the way of worldly posessions that I couldn't live without. Would it suck to lose everything I do have? Fo sho. But honestly, I could probably name about 10 things in my house off the top of my head, so I wouldn't be in heartbreak city for too long.

    18. If it was an evacuation I would definately shove all my dollies in a duffle bag and go. forget clothes and stuff, resins and pets first! But if it was along the lines of a fire I would focus on getting my large family out and our millions of pets. This idea has made me a little paranoid now and I think I will go and get a large duffle bag just in case ^^;

    19. I think a lot of people would do that. It's probably like, a survival thing. XD; Like our instincts are to risk everything for the next meal otherwise we could starve, and that easily turns into "risk everything for anything that's kind of important to us". But since you spent so much time looking for crocs, what was the chance REALLY that one would have got you? People surf all the time even if they know there are sharks. People DRIVE all the time even though there are fatal crashes every day. It's like.. there are high risks in a lot of activities, but slim chances that those risks will come your way. (And a fire doesn't actually seem like a very risky thing to me, in most cases. I mean, you'd have to be really unlucky for a fire to actually GET you, so I don't feel like it would be a big risk to save a doll in that situation.)

      So yeah.
      I probably would have done what you did. It's KINDA stupid, but for some reason it doesn't really seem that stupid to me. XD;

    20. If there's a fire, going after the cats. If I have at least half an hour warning, I can get the cats, food, electronics, water, clothes, and all of my dolls in their cases and in my car. Books, CDs, dvds are replaceable.
