Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. this is very difficult. I would get myself and other people and my cat to safety, but if I can I would grab my dolls and put them in a bag that I could hold without it's difficult to grab other things.

    2. Living in New Orleans I have to consider this reality...and yes, during a hurricane evacuation I would defintiely try to take my doll with me. In the past (like during Katrina) I have always had time to pack up all the pets and my most prized possessions before the hurricane made landfall. People and pets would always come first, though.

    3. I have no pets, and hubby is able bodied, so my concern would be getting me out with enough stuff for short term survival

      If I have about 15 minutes warning:
      Grab large rucksack (has sleeping bag and mat in it, although I should get the bag out and store it non-compressed)
      Empty contents of camping/walking drawer into it
      Add laptop, camera, chargers
      Grab small rucksack (this contains keys, minor first aid kit, purse, ebook reader etc anyway)
      Sweep art materials and knives off desk into it
      Grab shoes
      Sweep about half dried food cupboard contents into large rucksack (hubby would take the rest)
      Fill 3 litre, 2 litre and 1 litre bottle with water
      Grab tent and tarp on way out
      Put shoes on in car

      If I had a bit more time, I'd add clothes, probably Maeve (my BonBon), and possibly a couple of resin horses, and other odds and sods (at this point, it would probably include various jewellery making stuff, just for something else to keep occupied with!). Other models would come later, if at all.

      As my neck of the woods isn't exactly known for extreme weather and the like, there's no reason why I should even have such a plan, let alone know roughly how long it would take me to do it :doh

      If there was a fire, I'd grab as much as I could whilst on the phone to the fire brigade, then evacuate, assuming hubby hadn't been able to tackle it

    4. I had a dream where this dude through Duchess off a peer, it made me think what I would do.
      In the end, knowing me, I'll jump in feet first! I never was one for self survival if other people was involded who could save theme selves. I'm such a martyr :lol:

    5. Am having my house gutted so moving all my dolls into storage.
      In an emergency the only thing I would grab would be my cat!!!!

    6. I can still remember that when i was a kid, i would always place my dolls on my bags so if there's a case of fire, i could carry them all the way. Now, would get first our important documents like passports, passbooks and others then my laptop and some valuables that I could sell. Then i'll get my doll afterwards. :) My loved ones are my top most priority of course :) Dolls are material things and they could not replace people

    7. Makes me glad I live in Britain. We don't have natural disasters (other than flooding, but I'm not in a flood zone so I'm safe YAY) so I don't need to worry about that.
      If it was a /fire/ however... I think I'd be too preoccupied trying to save my guinea pigs XD I mean sure, they didn't cost me hundreds of ยฃs, but I love them more. I can always get new dolls

    8. It depends on the type of disaster, but a doll won't feed me if there is no food and no food coming in (area cannot be reached by road for example) and a doll won't help me get access to my bank account and insurance money after having lost everything, but a passport or other ID will.

      My top 3 is people, pets, and ID card/passport. After that I'd make sure I have food, clothes, cash, and a mobile phone (if possible with recharger) with me. If I really have to leave my home or risk death or injury, I'm not going to lug my collectables around no matter how much I value my dolls in a safe and comfortable environment. Dolls are luxury items and evacuation is not a luxury situation.

    9. My family and I are all physically able, so all I'd need to do is make them aware of the impending danger and I trust them to mobilize accordingly. We have five extremely rowdy Shih Tzus. I'm pretty sure I'd go for them first. I'd imagine having to carry two or three of them in the event of an emergency. If my doll were in its carrier, and that carrier that a strap I could just sling across myself, I'd definitely bring it with me. If not, I'd get all the living things out first before my resin babies.

      If it was one of those "slow" evacuations, like the ones that government agencies give you a warning in advance for, then most definitely I'd save my dolls, as well as any other material things I could bring without unnecessary burden.

      When it comes right down to it, it's flesh and blood (and fur!) before resin. :sweat

    10. It would depend on which house I was at at the time.
      If I was at my mom's house, assuming the disaster is a fire, I'd get my dogs out. We have two cats there, but they could easily jump the fence since they live outside, so I don't really see that as an emergency. My brother's a fast runner, so the only thing i'd have to do would be to make sure my Mom was awake and getting out.
      If I was at my dad's house, My dad can handle himself, and so could my brother, and we've got no pets there, so yeah, I would grab my snowglobes, music boxes, and my dolls and gtfo. XD;

      I do worry about what would happen if I was at school >: If my brother is home, and he had the time, he knows to grab my boy and my puki if he has pocket room. I don't think my dad or mom would be concerned about getting my dolls out, though. XD;

    11. If I have time I will save my valuables.
      Of course people and pets come first.
      Ever since I was little I had a bag for a situation like that.
      As fast as I can I'll stuff the items important to me in that bag.
      If I haven't the time then, bye bye dolls.

    12. Sort of funny, I've been in the slow evacuation threat the past two springs because of flooding on the Red River. I'm immediately, like, within sight, of a drainage ditch guaranteed to 40 feet, and while this spring wasn't so bad, last spring was horrible. I mean a nightmare.

      And we didn't evacuate last year from the complex, though about 80% of the residents did. There was almost too much time to think of what you would take out and what you'd leave behind if the dikes broke down here. We wouldn't have had much time. I had the cat cases ready to go, and we had our personal papers bundled up as well and the laptops. The dolls were not going with us however, we had them located, after much debate, on shelving in closets on the second floor. There was no way the water would've gotten that high, and we felt better to leave them where we knew they'd be left safely than to travel with them and potentially have something happen to them or have them be misplaced, or be forced to leave them behind.

      It was an incredibly difficult decision, and actually in the end we would've been stranded with them because it became impossible to drive out of our section of town, but that's neither here nor there, LOL! :doh

      If it were a sudden situation, that would definitely be a different matter. I would be prepared to even leave beloved cats behind, because they're prone to hiding in impossible spots under beds and such when afraid, and if I have seconds to get out because of fire or somesuch, there's a practicality. But if I have a few minutes' warning, I'd say the dolls are portable enough to come with. It has to fit into the car, basically! :sweat But I do know what I'd do with some head's up time and the probability that the house wouldn't be destroyed, at least.

      .hlp

    13. In case of a fire even the most able bodied person can suffocate in mere minutes when asleep. Don't go running around a house on fire to check if everybody is out, but also don't asume people don't need your help. Some situations are dangerous no matter how well you can take care of yourself, but should you ever find yourself in such a situation, it usually doesn't need any thought that people are more important than stuff.

    14. It's most important that my family and dog and other people are safe. I love my dolls very much... But they don't have a life. So I don't evacuate together with my dolls, I wish they in the box are safe.

    15. The evacuation order would be: Dogs, cats, computer, then dolls.... and then whatever else is in the house.....

    16. Family, cats, survival pack, then dolls and other frivolity. I can save up and buy another doll and she'll become another Sonia. But, I can't replace my cats, or my husband, or mother-in-law and any possible kid.

    17. Because I don't own any pets or have any younger siblings, I'd just follow my mum and dad out of the house should a natural disaster of some sort strike and then I would definitely quickly pack my dolls as they live in my room (when they are at home :sweat). I'd definitely pack my essentials first like my laptop, irreplaceable school papers, etc, but my dolls would be up there too, as I spent a lot of money on them and cherish them too.
      If it was like a fire burning through my house, I may not have time to grab all the items listed above, but I would make an effort to grab the items closest to me and then make a dash out of the house. It would just be a matter of which of the items are closest to me and most accessible before I run out. ^^;;

    18. Animals would be first and foremost in my mind for any short or long term crisis. I love our cats, even it they are crockety old man cats and our dogs just as important. Living beings are much more important that dolls... But if my doll did perish I would break down and WEEP inconsobably for quiet a while, and I dont cry. Ever. So much hard work, only for it to disappear.

      With that said, I would admit that I would evac with my dolls if it were a long term thing. Like a flood or something. I would grab food, clothing ect. But I only have the one doll at the moment and he's not too heavy. I would grab my computer too, but for the record thats easier for me to do because I have a laptop.

    19. My mom can move by her self, She's always rushing around the house anyway.
      She'd probably be able to get out of the house before me! X'D

      I would probably grab my Thumb drive and doll(s)
      All which are in arm's reach to where I am in my house 90% Of the time |3
      My Thumb drive literally has YEARS of art work on it, which I don't have the hard copy for anymore. My art is my life, I would be devastated if I lost it. same for the doll, after saving for over a year, I'd be pretty depressed if I lost them.
      The way I have things in my room, it wouldn't even take an extra two seconds for me to grab them.

    20. My dolls are always in a very specific place, next to their carrying bag, if not in it. So it would be relatively easy to toss them in (not literally!) and get to a safe place. The OP mentioned tornadoes, but you have a lot more time to prepare for them than people think, so it wouldn't really be an issue. Perhaps it's because I have lived in Oklahoma almost my entire life so I have tornado precautions down to a very precise procedure. But in any event, I would definitely try to rescue my dolls, because they are so important to me.
