Disaster! Must evacuate! Will your dolls go with you?

Jun 29, 2008

    1. I have nightmares like this, except it's always my kitten that I'm struggling to get out of a burning building.:o Instinctually, I wouldn't even think about something like dolls! Haha, but I'd probably be pretty sad to lose it and my computer.

    2. No. I have over 20 pets in this house, most of which are upstairs in large cages, like the snake and iguana, and by the time I got them all (hopefully all) I'd never have time for the dolls. If I had more time after I got all the animals out, which is highly unlikely, I'd go for photographs and important documents second. Dolls would be third priority, actual life ALWAYS comes first.

It sucks, but there'd be no way I could get 'em with so many pets here! Even if I could rescue them, there'd be no room in the car if it was an evacuation scenario. I should really think about having my collection insured, because I have almost 20 resinoids, and now I'm worried xD!

    3. At least one (most lovely) must be evacuate!

    4. I found myself in a situation sort of like this.
I was at school and a lockdown happened. Our teacher told us not to bring any bags or jackets with us because we has to evacuate to a different classroom quickly. As luck would have it, that was the day that I brought Zull with me to have an in-school photoshoot. I brought my BJD with me no matter what the teacher said.>.>
My teacher didn't argue with me since he already knew the value of my doll.
In the end Zull and I were both safe. It turns out a student brought a fake gun to school................what a waste of 2 hours.......

    5. My parent and my older brothers would be able to handle themselves (I'm generally the dumb baby of the family anyways XD), and I don't have pets, so I'd for sure make sure I have my valuables, which would definitely include my dolls. I'd go for the more important personal things like my PC or the big TV, since those are probably more steal worthy to others, but alas, they're not portable so I would just have to take what dolls and other sentimental items that I could.

    6. humans/pets, then dolls, then laptop.
however, if there was a hurricane, I'd only pack my tinies. and tuck my larger dolls away to keep them safe.

    7. My priorities would be people first, then pets. After that, I think photographs and dolls would be high on the list.

    8. I agree, well said, haha

    9. For sure I would make sure my loved ones and pets were out in the case of a fire and then get my dolls if possible. If we had to leave our house in not much of a hurry I'd try to get my dolls and most of their things. If we did have to hurry, I'd make sure I had my pets first and family first.

    10. First I would check the loved ones (parents and brothers) are safe or can manage by themselves to be safe. If I had to manage by myself, and of course depending on the situation, I'll try to get my computer, my folder containing all the important papers and my dolls. When you have no time to think your first priority are always the living people, but I would be really sad if I had to forget about my dolls in a situation like that... :(

    11. If the disaster were a flood or tornado I probably would bring my dolls because there are warning sirens (and other notifications) for these types of disasters and usually they come on are hours (if not more) in advance of the flood/tornado. But if it were something like my house burning of the disaster came without warning I would focus on my family and pets, and a few necessity items if i had the time.

    12. I'd save my doll if possible, but my computer hard drives would have priority. Dolls and computers can be replaced, but the data on the hard drives is a lot harder to replace.

    13. Living in Eastern NC, hurricanes are always a threat in late summer/ early fall. Since we don't really get evacuation orders, most of our major damage from them comes fast- wind, hail or sudden flooding. One of the first things my family does when we hear that there is a bad hurricane on the way is take video/ picture evidence of valuables in our home for insurance (so the valuable stuff... is insured). Once the storm hits, its mostly a waiting game. In that situation, I would probably have super valuable things packed and ready to go.
In a true sudden emergency, like a fire, I have strict priorities: a doll and other physical things only get out if they are right beside me when it happens. I wouldn't even waste much time trying to get the dog or cats. As much as I love them, I know that my family would be so very angry if I died and they lost me for trying to save a pet. I would call the dog or try to check the cats usual spots if and only if there was time (and lets face it, there never is really any time; seconds can mean life in a fire), and keep calling for the dog after getting out of the house, or ask a firefighter if they could get any pets still inside, but if they said it was too dangerous, thats it.
I grew up a firefighter's kid, so yeah, I know that it sucks, but you have to put yourself first, and respect that the firefighters can't always go in to save a pet, and they probably will tell you no outright to "save" a doll.
The saying is true: you can always replace physical things, but nothing can ever replace a lost life.

    14. I'd be to busy saving all my animals, sadly :( but 16 geckos and 3 dogs and 4 hamsters, I wouldn't have a choice. But if it was in a tornado, I'd carry my doll into the closet with me, I couldn't save my caged animals :( no room in a closet.

    15. Hmm, if I knew the disaster was coming and I actually had time to evacuate (Fire, flood, Hurricane, Tornado, etc), my priorities would be Family > Pets > Computer/pictures > Dolls/Books/Camera/etc

I live in AZ where we have practically no natural disasters besides sporadic wildfires (or I guess lightening but not much you can do about that), however I have given thought to how I would pack my car with animals and essentials and then personal items.

I grew up in California so I know through earthquakes that for unexpected disasters, such as earthquakes and fires, it's people first and people only. If you have time to grab an animal and get into a load bearing doorway/table/etc then awesome, but generally it was grab a sibling and go. Personal items just aren't an issue. I was trained the same way with fire drills my family did. Saving animals was secondary to getting out of the house and grabbing personal items wasn't even a blip on the radar.

So in an unexpected and quick disaster, dolls wouldn't even factor into the equation. In a predicted disaster we were being evacuated for, then I'd try to bring my dolls, but would not make it my primary objective.

    16. Actually I have never really thought about it. I guess that would depends on the nature of the disaster. If I had time even if a little to prepare, then yes I'd bring my dolls. In case of fires which you usually dun have time to, then I'm more likely to go for my parents and pets as priority, followed by important documents and other valuables including dolls if possible. It's a good idea to think it through first though, so that I can prepare an emergency kit or something to prepare for such events (like putting my important stuff together so I can just grab everything and run) lolz

    17. Considering how much my dolls have cost me...and that I feel that they are practically apart of me (and considering sewing for dolls is part of how I make a living) you better believe I have a disaster plan that that involves bringing them with me if all hell were to break loose, lol. Now that plan also includes evacuating my family, pets, my sewing machine, my cello and my bass guitar too, lol:) Of course, we'll see how this all works out in the event of some catastrophic emergency....

    18. It would depend. I'm not really the type to linger when I suspect a problem. Also, I have a hamster in my apartment, but two cats at home. I couldn't get two cats and dolls out in time, probably, but I could scoop the hamster up fast. I would probably just go for one, and then drop it when more important stuff (people, pets, survival necessities) hit me.

    19. first my husband and daughter then my pets and then my dolls!

    20. i agree with most people on here about the living things but i'm on the opposite side of the house by myself so it would hurt me more to try and find everyone. they are closer to the door so they would be fine. my first thing would be to grab my bird then i would get a bag or something and save the dolls. i would have a hard time leaving them because i don't think they are replacable. i know i can buy another doll just like the one before but it would never be the same. my bird will come first but my BJDs are extremly important too and they would be coming out the window with me no matter what. i would probably burn myself to get them if it was a fire. to me my dolls are alive.
